game information www.cakesbaseball.com @cakesbaseball Tuesday, July 3 Shrine on Airline Metairie, LA new orleans baby cakes (40-43) vs. oklahoma city dodgers (44-35) LHP Jarlin Garcia (0-1, 7.23) vs. RHP Drew Hutchison (1-1, 5.00) THE BABY CAKES The New Orleans Baby Cakes conclude the longest homestand of the season with tonight s series finale against the Oklahoma City Dodgers. New Orleans was swept in a four-game set at Bricktown Ballpark from April 13-16, but has won five of six meetings at the Shrine. The Cakes are wrapping up a stretch of playing 16 out of 20 at home, and will play 13 of its next 17 on the road. LAST TIME OUT Cito Culver s single in the bottom of the ninth scored the game-winning run as the Baby Cakes beat Oklahoma City, 2-1. After starting pitchers Brock Stewart and Odrisamer Despaigne matched zeroes into the seventh, the Baby Cakes broke through against the bullpen when Tomas Telis reached on an infield single to lead off the seventh, advanced to second on a throwing error and scored on Jon Rodriguez s single to right. Ben Meyer had allowed one hit to the first 10 batters he faced before Andrew Toles belted a two-out home run in the eighth to knot the score at 1-1. Telis drew a one-out walk in the ninth and Cristhian Adames singled, with both runners advancing a base on a passed ball before Culver singled through the hole at short to give the Cakes a walk-off win. Both teams struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities, with the Dodgers going 1x9 with runners in scoring position and NOLA finishing 2x9, combining to strand 17 baserunners. Javy Guerra worked out of trouble in the top of the ninth to earn the victory. ON THE HILL Jarlin Garcia ascends the bump for the fifth time this season, and his first start against the Dodgers. Garcia looks to rebound from a defeat to Iowa last Wednesday, when he gave up 12 hits in 4.2 innings and was charged with 11 earned runs, tied for the most by a NOLA pitcher in franchise history. The southpaw had permitted just one earned run in his previous 13.1 innings. Garcia held a 4.41 ERA (25 ER/51.0 IP) in 12 appearances (six starts) for the Marlins while limiting opponents to a.219 batting average (41x187) before being optioned to New Orleans on June 3. DEAN OF HITS Austin Dean collected a career-high six RBI Saturday, surpassing five-rbi efforts on June 28, 2014 with Low-A Greensboro and May 10, 2016 with AA Jacksonville. He slugged the second Baby Cakes grand slam of the season, joining Jon Rodriguez (May 23 at Omaha). He has hit safely in 20 of his last 24 games, batting.329 (29x88). Dean owns a.343 average overall between NOLA and Jacksonville, good for 11th in all of Minor League Baseball, after hitting.420 (34x81) in 22 games at Double-A to be named April s Southern League Player of the Month, pacing the circuit in batting average, hits, total bases (53), slugging (.654) and OPS (1.120). Dean is batting.336 (40x119) in 29 games for the Cakes since moving into the leadoff spot. HOT SOUP Over his last 55 games, dating to April 26, Eric Campbell is batting.361, second-best in the PCL in that span to Reno s Socrates Brito (.380). His.463 on-base percentage in that time leads the league, while his 45 RBI are good for fifth-most. Campbell finished June with 26 RBI, second in the PCL for the month to Fresno s AJ Reed (30). J-ROD Jon Rodriguez equaled a season high with three hits, his fourth time collecting three knocks in a game and first since May 5 at Omaha. Since returning from the temporary inactive list, Rodriguez has gone 5x15 with three walks, and in 21 games since May 19, he is batting.293 (17x58) with four home runs, 14 RBI and 12 walks. On This Date... 1999: Daryle Ward hits three homers, including the game-winner in the top of the 12th to power NOLA past Iowa 11-9. Ward goes deep to lead off the second and snaps a 4-4 tie with his two-run blast in the third to cap a fourrun inning. His home run the next night would give him 11 in 13 games. YOU RE AN ALL-STAR Eric Campbell and Zac Gallen have been named to the PCL All-Star team, the league announced Thursday. Ninth in the league batting race with a.330 average, Campbell was elected as the PCL s second baseman. He also ranks fifth in on-base (.433) and ninth in RBI (49). Gallen was also selected, and holds a 4-4 record and a 3.47 ERA, which ranks ninth in the league. It is the second career All-Star nods for each player, Campbell earning Eastern League honors in 2012 with AA Binghamton, and Gallen netting Florida State League recognition last year with High-A Palm Beach. HIGH HONOUR Odrisamer Despaigne earned PCL Pitcher of the week honors for June 25-July 1 by pitching 10.2 scoreless innings in two appearances (one start). The Cuban native struck out eight against one walk and seven hits, and earned a win last Tuesday vs. Iowa by retiring 15 of 18 batters out of the bullpen. Despaigne is the second Baby Cake to win the award this season, joining Ben Meyer (April 30 May 6). SAVE ME Javy Guerra has pitched 14.2 shutout frames in 10 games since being activated from the DL. Dating back to his final six outings with the Cakes last season, Guerra owns a 23.0-inning scoreless streak, the longest by a NOLA pitcher since Brian Flynn had a 22.0-inning run from July 23-August 2, 2013. The club record is held by reliever Mike Ignasiak, a 53.2-inning streak in 1993 that ended in April 1994. WHAT A RELIEF The home run by Andrew Toles on Sunday snapped a 14.0-inning scoreless streak by Baby Cakes relievers. In that span, the relief corps yielded just eight hits with 16 strikeouts. GETTING DEFENSIVE New Orleans has one error in the last five games and are one of four PCL clubs with a.983 fielding percentage to lead the league. The Cakes are 29-15 when they do not committ an error. LONELIEST NUMBER The Cakes broke a three-game losing streak in one-run games to improve to 12-19 on the year. Only Albuquerque (6-10) has a worse record in one-run contests among PCL clubs. The 31 one-run games are two more than Nashville and Round Rock for the league lead. NOLA S NOLA Austin Nola has a hit in 16 of his last 20 games, batting.310 (22x71) with seven doubles and 12 RBI. His.305 mark overall ranks fourth among PCL catchers with at least 100 at-bats, behind Fresno backstops Garrett Stubbs (.339) and Tim Federowicz (.328) and Reno s Anthony Recker (.308). He made his Shrine debut in the Independence Day game in 2015 vs. Iowa and went 4x5 with a double and two RBI. HOME SWEET HOME At 26-17, the Cakes have the third-best home record in the PCL behind Oklahoma City (27-9) and Colorado Springs (23-12). The.604 winning percentage would rank third in club history, behind 1994 (.625) and 1998 (.606), both playoff seasons. Conversely, NOLA has the worst road mark in the league at 14-26. NAWLINS NOTES The Baby Cakes snapped a three-game losing streak in day games, bringing their season record to 11-11... Peter Mooney hit leadoff for the first time this season, after doing so 19 times last year... Cristhian Adames is 11x28 (.393) over his last eight contests with a home run and five RBI... The Cakes notched their fifth walk-off victory, one shy of the team s total from the last two seasons combined. upcoming schedule and probable starters 7:00 p.m. CT Game #84 Home Game #44 cakes corner Current Streak...W2 Home... 26-17 Streak...W2 Road... 14-26 Streak...L3 Last 10... 4-6 vs. RHP (starter)... 31-37 vs. LHP (starter)... 9-6 vs. Division... 17-14 vs. American Conference... 32-37 vs. Pacific Conference... 8-6 vs. NL Affiliates... 16-25 vs. AL Affiliates... 24-18 Day... 11-11 Night... 29-32 Extra Innings... 5-6 Shutouts... 7-3 One-Run Games... 12-19 Score 5+ Runs... 22-11 Scoring First... 25-15 Opponent Scores First... 15-28 Commit Error... 11-28 Hit Home Run... 23-15 Quality Start... 24-11 Outhit Opponent... 27-10 Leading After 6... 29-8 Trailing After 6... 5-33 Leading After 7... 30-7 Trailing After 7... 5-34 Leading After 8... 28-2 Trailing After 8... 2-31 Series Record...6-10-4 Series Openers... 11-10 Series Finales... 9-11 Doubleheader Games... 2-2 DH Sweep/Swept/Split...0/0/2 Come From Behind Wins...19 Bat Around For/Against...8/4 Longest Win Streak...+6 Longest Lose Streak...-7 High Water Mark...+3 Low Water Mark...-6 White Jersey... 20-10 Grey Jersey... 7-13 Blue Jersey... 11-17 Pelicans Jersey... 1-1 Misc. STARTING STRONG Through his first six appearances, Garc ia held a 1.09 ERA (3 ER/31.0 IP), and his 0.78 ERA (2 ER/23.0 IP) as a starter led all MLB starting pitchers with at least four starts. Opponents were hitting.132 in those starts, the best mark in MLB ahead of Justin Verlander (.146) and Johnny Cueto (.150), and Garcia had allowed one hit in 21 at-bats (.048) with runners in scoring position. BEAT THE BOMBERS Garcia earned his first win as a starter on 4/17 at Yankee Stadium, limiting New York to one hit 5.0 shutout innings. With his 4.0 hitless innings to start the game, he tied Bobo Holloman (1953) for the most consecutive hitless innings to begin career as a starter since 1900. I LOVE LA On 4/23 at the Dodgers, Garcia tied a career high with 6.0 innings pitched and recorded a career-high seven strikeouts, while allowing one run, four hits, and one walk. Became the only Marlins starter in franchise history to limit opponents to four-hits-or-fewer and one-or-no runs in each of his first three career starts. STINGY Garcia allowed a total of five hits over his first three starts and 10 hits over first four starts, both the fewest of any starter in Marlins history. Four others held the previous three-start record of nine, while Brad Hand had the four-start mark, limiting opponents to 13 hits over his first four starts in 2011. Dating back to 1913, only 10 MLB pitchers allowed fewer hits in their first four career starts. TRIPLE-A DEBUT In his Triple-A debut on 6/7 at Las Vegas, Garcia allowed three runs on four hits in 3.0 innings of a no-decision. He surrendered a three-run homer to Patrick Kivlehan in the opening frame and permitted five of the six right-handed hitters he faced to reach base (3x4 with two walks). DUBIOUS DISTINCTION Iowa pounded out 12 hits in 4.2 innings against Garcia on 6/26, charging him with 11 earned runs, tied for the most in New Orleans franchise history with Brian Stokes (2008), Brian Lawrence (2010) and Dylan Axelrod (2016). 2017 in review HEY ROOKIE In his first MLB campaign, Garcia led the Marlins bullpen with 68 appearances to rank 18th in the National League and second among NL rookies to Cincinnati s Wandy Peralta (69). He stranded 34x42 inherited baserunners (81.0%), seventh-best among NL relievers, and his.235 batting average against ranked sixth among NL rookie relievers. MLB DEBUT Garcia started the season with AA Jacksonville, hurling 4.0 scoreless frames in three games before being recalled on 4/14. In his debut that night against the Mets, he tossed a scoreless sixth inning and fanned Rene Rivera for his first career strikeout. day-by-day starts 2018 season W-L ERA G IP H R ER BB K 0-1 7.23 4 18.2 23 15 15 6 10 2018 splits (aaa) Home Games: 0-1, 11.00 ERA Away Games: 0-0, 3.72 ERA Day Games: 0-1, 21.21 ERA Night Games: 0-0, 2.57 ERA vs. Left-handers:.231 (6x26), 0 HR, 1 BB, 6 K vs. Right-handers:.354 (17x48), 2 HR, 5 BB, 4 K April: -- May: -- June: 0-1, 7.23 ERA July: -- August/September: -- 2018 highs/lows (aaa) Innings: 6.2 6/22 at Memphis Most Hits Allowed: 12 6/27 vs. Iowa Least Hits Allowed: 3 6/14 vs. Fresno Most Runs Allowed: 11 6/27 vs. Iowa Least Runs Allowed: 0 6/14 vs. Fresno Strikeouts: 4 6/14 vs. Fresno Walks: 2 6/7 at Las Vegas and 6/22 at Memphis Homers Allowed: 1 6/7 at Las Vegas and 6/27 vs. Iowa Winning Streak: W0 - Losing Streak: L1 6/27 vs. Iowa Shortest Start: 3.0 6/7 at Las Vegas Pitches Thrown: 87 6/27 vs. Iowa last time (AAA) Win: -- Loss: 6/27 vs. Iowa Quality Start: 6/22/18 at Memphis Complete Game: -- Shutout: -- career vs. opponent W-L ERA G IP H R ER BB K 0-0 0.00 0 0.0 0 0 0 0 0 DATE OPP.
