Climbing the Career Charts Rebounds Hill finished with 15 points, her third straight game in double figures. Seniors Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick and Olivia Dardy chipped in 15 and 13 points, respectively. Kirkpatrick also led the Deacons with eight rebounds. Wake Forest led at halftime 3-32 despite shooting just 35.9 percent from the floor. But the Demon Deacons buried shots at a torrid 0.7 percent pace in the second stanza. The Homecourt(s) Advantage? Wake Forest owns a 7-2 record this season when playing at home, including a 31 mark against visiting ACC opponents. But can you really describe it as a home court advantage when those seven victories have been spread over three different arenas? The Deacons have played six games at their regular home, Lawrence Joel Coliseum. They have posted a 5-1 record at the Joel, with the lone loss a two-point heartbreaker to Western Michigan in their home opener on Nov. 25. Wake Forest has also posted a 1-1 record in two games played on campus at Reynolds Gymnasium losing to Virginia (Dec. 9) and defeating Coastal Carolina (Jan. 22). In its most recent outing, Wake Forest played Georgia Tech in the Joel Coliseum Annex (using its regular floor) and defeated the Jackets, 79-71. It was just the second WFU game ever played at the Annex, as the Deacs lost to Florida State in that facility back in the 1997-9 season. Since the loss, Wake Forest has won five straight at home, defeating New Orleans, North Carolina, Florida State, Coastal Carolina and Georgia Tech. Senior Class Stepping Up... There are three seniors on Wake Forest s active roster, and the trio has played an integral role in the Deacons 11 wins so far this season. The three seniors Olivia Dardy, Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick, and Kristen Shaffer are three of the team s top four scorers (Shaffer 11.1, Kirkpatrick., Dardy 9.9 ppg) while also holding two of the team s top three rebounding numbers. Kirkpatrick is second on the squad with 5. boards a game, while Dardy is third with.. A senior has led the team in scoring in 1 of 19 games, and has been the rebounding leader seven times. The trio has also posted some of the team s best numbers from the line, and combined they are shooting 79 percent from the stripe (7-of-13). In the key games or crucial situations, it is usually one or all three members of the senior trio that has stepped up to make the big plays... Although the Deacs lost by two to Western Michigan, Kirkpatrick shot a careerbest 3-of-3 from three-point range. (She had only scored treys in the previous three seasons combined.) At High Point, Dardy scored a team-high 15 to help the Deacs rally from a halftime deficit and win, 0-52. The three seniors were the team s top scorers (Shaffer 1, Dardy 15, Kirkpatrick 12) in the ACC opener versus Virginia, a game that WFU led at halftime. Dardy s 2 points and rebounds keyed a 22-point, second-half comeback that resulted in a 77- overtime win at Quinnipiac. All three posted double-figure scoring in a 73-71 win over UNC, and Kirkpatrick s two free throws with eight seconds remaining helped seal the victory. The only double-figure Deacons versus FSU, were, you guessed it, the three seniors, as Shaffer set a team season-best with 2 points, and Dardy posted her th career double-double. Dardy posted game-highs in points (19), blocks (3) and steals (3) versus Coastal Carolina, while Kirkpatrick put up 1 points and seven rebounds in the win. The senior trio all posted double-figure scoring in the win over Georgia Tech as Shaffer had 20, Kirkpatrick 13 and Dardy. The three also combined for assists. Hill Posts Back-to-Back Double-Double Performances... Deacon freshman Eafton Hill has put up some big numbers in the last three games, averaging 1 points, 9.7 rebounds and 2.7 blocks a game in Wake Forest s most recent outings at Maryland, versus Coastal Carolina and Georgia Tech. Hill scored a game-high 20 points versus the Terrapins and pulled down rebounds to notch the double-double. She followed that up with another double-double night against Coastal on Monday, posting game-highs with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Against Georgia Tech she scored 15, including an -point spurt which lifted the Deacs to a second-half lead over Tech. Hill has recorded three double-doubles so far this season, and is the first player to post back-to-back doubledoubles since Tracy Connor did it in January of 1997. Then a senior, Connor scored 12 points, rebounds versus Clemson on Jan. 2, then followed it up with 11 points, boards against Florida State in back-to-back home contests. Hill was named ACC Rookie of the Week on Dec., Hill Wake s first such honor in two seasons. In the team s three wins over High Point, Richmond and Coppin State, she helped to lift the Deacons to a -1 start for the first time in eight seasons by averaging 1.3 points,.7 rebounds, 2.0 blocks, and 1.7 assists per game while shooting over percent from the field and over 71 percent from the free throw line. Hill s top performance of that week came at Richmond where she scored 22 points, shooting.500 percent from the floor ( for 1) as well as grabbing five defensive rebounds and three blocked shots. WFU s last ACC Rookie of the Week was current junior LaChina Robinson, who garnered the honor in the 199-99 season. A day after receiving the conference honor, Hill went out and notched her first career double-double with a 12-point, 13-rebound performance in a 5-50 win over Liberty. It was the team s first double-double of the season. Through Wake Forest s first 19 games, Hill is the team s second-leading scorer and top rebounder with. points and 5. boards a game. She also has a team high 22 blocked shots, which ranks third in the league. From the Line... Wake Forest has traditionally been a team that has done well from the charity stripe, and this season it has a chance to break the school record for free throw percentage. The record is 71.9 percent, set in the 1993-9 season (323-of-9). Currently the Deacs are shooting 7.0 percent (235-of-351) from the stripe. Wake s best performance of the season thus far came Coastal Carolina, when it shot 7-of- from the line for a 7.5 percentage. More impressive was a 21-of-25 free throw performance for an.0 percentage against Coppin State on Dec. 2. Two players are averaging over 0 percent from the line senior Kristen Shaffer (2-of-31,.39) and senior Olivia Dardy (5-of-5,.0) although neither has made enough trips to the line to qualify for the ACC rankings. Shaffer owned a team-best streak of 1 straight makes before missing one at Arizona State on Dec. 30. Dardy nailed a team season-high with eight free throws versus FSU (going -of-). Starters Versus the Bench... Coach Curtis used the same starting lineup in Wake s first 1 games of the season, but made a change starting with the Clemson game, starting sophomore forward Tiffani Listenbee in place of LaChina Robinson. It was Listenbee first collegiate start, and she finished the game with two points and two rebounds as WFU s starters combined for just 1 points. Wake s current starting lineup of Listenbee, forwards Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick and Eafton Hill, and guards Val Klopfer and Kristen Shaffer currently account for over 5 percent of the Deacons scoring output (72 of 1251 points) and nearly 7 percent of rebounding (337 of 71). The starting five is also responsible for 59 percent of WFU s three-pointers (1 of 70) and 3 percent (7 of 75) of the team s blocked shots. Kirkpatrick an All-Around Player... Through the first half of the season, senior forward Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick has, at one point or another, topped the Deacs cumulative stats in scoring, offensive rebounding, total rebounding, steals, field goal percentage, three-point percentage and minutes played. One of four Deacons to have started every game this season, Mocky currently leads the squad in three of those areas average Kirkpatrick minutes (2.9), offensive rebounds (52) and steals (25). She also leads the Deacs in three-point percentage (-of-1,.), although she s taken significantly fewer shots than some of Wake s perimeter players. Eafton Hill, Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick and Kristen Shaffer are the only three players who have led the team in all three categories. Sharp-Shooting Shaffer... The shift from the small forward position to shooting guard this year has proven to be a successful one for senior Kristen Shaffer. Shaffer, who stands 5-, has posted 11 double-figure scoring games so far this season, surpassing her season total of games from a year ago. Included in those 11 games is a five-game double-figure scoring streak from Dec. 9 to Dec. 30. Shaffer scored 1 points on 7-of-9 shooting against UNC a 77. shooting percentage which is the second-best Shaffer performance by a Deacon player this season. Her performance versus Florida State on Jan. 1 was a career-best, as she scored 2 points on 9-of-12 shooting, including a perfect 5-of-5 from three-point range. The 2 points were the most by a Deacon in three seasons, and her three-point show tied a school record. Shaffer is currently the Deacons leading scorer with 11.1 points per game, and she is shooting over percent from the floor (-of-12). Dean s List Deacs... Six members of the women s basketball team were among the 1 WFU studentathletes named to the Fall 2000 Dean s List, including seniors Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick, Kristen Shaffer and Janae Whiteside, junior Val Klopfer, and freshmen Bianca Brown and Eafton Hill. Kirkpatrick, who is currently enrolled in graduate school at Wake Forest after earning two bachelor s degrees last spring, earned a perfect.0 for the semester. Winning Ways Against Non-ACC Foes... With the win over Quinnipiac on Dec. 19, Wake Forest notched its seventh victory of the season equalling its win total from a year ago. What jumps out most from that statistic is Wake Forest s improved showing against non-conference teams. The Deacs wrapped up its non-conference schedule this past Monday versus Coastal Carolina with an -3 mark. Wake Forest had not won eight non-acc games since the 199-97 campaign, when they notched eight non-conference victories. (Finishing with a 12-1 record, the 199-97 team won three ACC games and one ACC Tournament game.) With its ninth overall victory over Florida State on January 1, the 2000-01 Deacons have qualified as head coach Charlene Curtis most successful season in her four years with the program. (The 199-99 team posted eight overall victories.) A Balanced Attack... One of Wake Forest s strengths this season is a deep bench. Curtis has used nine players in all 19 games this season, and all 1 members of the roster have seen action in at least 1 games. Ten players are averaging at least minutes of playing time and every Deacon has also at least scored 1 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Wake Forest is so balanced, in fact, that the first four games of this season all produced a different scoring leader, rebounding leader and assist leader. On the Offensive... Wake Forest s offensive gameplan has resulted in some higher scores for the Deacs in the first half of the season. WFU is currently scoring 5. points per game,. points more than what it averaged last season (57.). The Deacons have not posted a scoring average above 70 points since the 1995-9 season, when they scored 70.3 ppg. The school record for scoring average is 0., which was set in the 19-9 campaign. The 7 points Wake Forest scored this season against Richmond (Nov. 30) were the most since the Deacs posted an -71 victory over Florida State on Jan. 20, 199. Deacs Throw a Block Party... Wake Forest set a new school record on Dec. 5 against Liberty when it blocked 11 shots. The previous record was blocks versus South Carolina State on November 29, 199. Five different Deacons were responsible for breaking the record, led by centers LaChina Robinson and Johanna Björklund with three apiece. Forwards Eafton Hill and Tiffani Listenbee each had two, while guard Tonia Brown recorded one. The 11-block performance was not only the best by an ACC team so far this season, but better than any ACC performance last season as well. The ACC record for blocked shots in a game is 15, set on two different occasions. At its current pace (3.95 bpg), Wake Forest is on target to break the school record for blocks in a season. The previous record is 93, set in the 197- campaign. Through 19 games this season, Wake has 75 blocked shots. The zero-block performance against Clemson was the first time this season the Deacs did not record a block, while they ve held five opponents to zero blocks. Wake Forest currently ranks third in the league (all games) in blocks per game. Early Season Road Warriors... Before falling to No. 1 UConn in Storrs, CT, Wake Forest put together a four-game road winning streak with victories at Appalachian State, High Point, Richmond and Quinnipiac. Wake Forest s first three victories of the 2000-01 campaign all came on the road. The four-game road winning streak was the longest since the 1992-93 campaign, in which the Deacs opened the year with road wins at East Tennessee State, Richmond and College of Charleston, and actually went on to win a school-record six consecutive road games during that stretch. Dardy on Target... In three game-stretch earlier this season (at High Point, Richmond and at home versus Coppin State), senior Olivia Dardy s shot was sizzling, as she connected on 9 percent of her field goals and 91 percent of her free throws. Dardy s best performance of the stretch came at High Point, where she was -of-7 from the field and nailed 3-of-3 free throws to score a team-high 15 points in the 0-52 win. Versus Coppin State on Dec. 2, Dardy was 7-of- from the line. The one miss was her first miss of the season. She s currently made 5-of-5 from the stripe for a.0 percentage. Wake Forest Successful on the Home Openers Tour... On Wake Forest s first three road trips of the season, the Deacs were the home opener for all three opponents. The situation worked in Wake s favor; however, as it defeated its opponents (Appalachian State, High Point and Richmond) in all three of those home openers. The win at App State was also an arena opener, as it was the inaugural women s basketball game in the Mountaineers new Holmes Convocation Center. Players Perform Well in Homecoming Games... Wake Forest has played three games this season in a team member s hometown and/or home state, and the players making their homecoming have all performed well in those games, including... Freshman Eafton Hill, who made her collegiate debut in a familiar place her hometown of Boone, NC. Hill earned the starting nod for the Deacs in their season opener at Appalachian State. The -1 forward has ties to ASU, as her sister attends school there while her mother works at the University. Hill had a large cheering section at the game, including her former Watauga High School teammates. She finished the game with nine points, three rebounds and an assist. One player who stepped up in the win at High Point was junior point guard Adell Harris and she had some motivation to do so. Harris hails from High Point, and was a graduate of T. Wingate Andrews High School. The former Guilford County Player of the Year saw her first action of the season in that game for the Deacs, playing 1 minutes and scoring seven points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal. She was perfect from the field, hitting 2-of-2 field goals (including a three-pointer) and nailing two free throws to give the Deacs a seven-point lead in the waning seconds of the game. Senior Olivia Dardy enjoyed a great outing at Quinnipiac in her home state of Connecticut on Dec. 19. The senior from Norwalk, CT, scored 2 points to give the Deacs a 77- overtime victory over the Braves. Her two free throws with 13 seconds remaining gave Wake Forest its first lead of the game, then Dardy took over in overtime with eight points to seal the win. She also posted her ninth career doubledouble in that game with rebounds. WFU in Season Openers... With the 3-0 victory over Appalachian State, Wake Forest improves to 21-9 in season openers. After leading the team in scoring with 22 points, including four three-pointers, in the first exhibition game, Whiteside injured her right knee just four minutes into the second exhibition on Nov.. An MRI revealed ligament damage in addition to an already-diagnosed dislocated kneecap, which will keep her sidelined for the 2000-01 season. Whiteside underwent successful surgery on November 21 to repair the ligament damage and is rehabilitating as expected. Climbing the Career Charts... The contest took place in the brand new Holmes Convocation Center and was the first women s basketball game in the facility. After ASU jumped out to a 7- lead, Eafton Hill tied the game witha three. The Deacs then went on a 1-5 scoring run and never relinquished the lead. An aggressive WFU defense forced 17 ASU first-half turnovers, resulting in 19 Deacon points. Wake had a balanced attack as every player in uniform scored at least two points. Three Deacons posted double-figures, as Kristen Shaffer led the team with 1 points. As a team the Deacs shot 2 percent for the game, including 55 percent from beyond the arc. WFU connected well from the free throw line, going a perfect 9-of-9 in the first half and 15-of-19 for the game (79 percent). Eafton Hill recorded the team s first double-double of the 2000-01 season, grabbing 13 rebounds and scoring 12 points. Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick also had a 12-point night while pulling down six rebounds. Point guards Val Klopfer and Brown each recorded four steals, while centers LaChina Robinson and Johanna Bjorklund blocked three shots apiece. As a team, Wake Forest set a new school record with 11 blocks. # 2/20 Virginia 77, Wake Forest 1 Recap found on pages 2-3. Wake Forest, New Orleans 52 Wake Forest used every player on its bench, but a strong allaround performance from its starting five gave the Deacs a -52 win over visiting New Orleans. After UNO scored first, the Deacs took the lead on a Kristen Shaffer three-pointer and never looked back. Wake led by 11 at the half, then built as much as a 23-point lead in the second half. Shaffer poured in a career-high 22 points in the victory, hitting -of-13 (1.5 percent). The Deacon starters accounted for 3 of Wake s points and 22 of the team s 5 rebounds. Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick grabbed a game-high rebounds, while Eafton Hill scored points and added five boards. New Orleans was held to a season-low 52 points, and shot just 2 percent (17-of-0) from the field. Wake Forest shot percent for the game (23-of-50) and was 73 percent from the line (1-of-22). The Deacs outrebounded New Orleans 5-32, and recorded six blocks to the Privateers one. Wake Forest 77, Quinnipiac (ot) Wake won its seventh game of the year, equalling its win total from a year ago, with a 77- overtime victory at Quinnipiac. The Deacons found themselves down early and were forced into playing catch-up for most of the game. Down by at half, Wake s situation quickly escalated into a 22-point deficit with less than 12 minutes left. The defense visibly stepped up and the Braves had a scoring drought of :3 and three subsequent droughts of over two minutes each, as Wake chipped away at the Quinnipiac lead. The Deacs went ahead 2-0 with 13 seconds remaining when Olivia Dardy, who had been playing with four fouls since the :5 mark, sank two free throws. Quinnipiac missed a shot on its next possession, then grabbed the offensive rebound, but appeared to throw the ball out of bounds as time expired. However, it was determined that 0. seconds remained, giving the Braves had a second chance. A layup at the buzzer sent the game into overtime. Dardy took over, however, scoring four buckets to finish with a game-high 2 points. The Deacs wrapped up the game by hitting five of six free throws. Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick tied her career high with 15 rebounds. Dardy notched her ninth career doubledouble with rebounds. #1 Connecticut 7, Wake Forest 52 Wake s mission on Dec. 22 was a tough one playing the topranked and defending national champion Connecticut. Playing before a crowd of,027 in Gampel Pavilion a WFU school record for a road game the Deacs were unable to contain UConn s quickness in transition, as the Huskies started the game by scoring four quick points off a missed shot and a turnover on Wake s first two possessions. The Deacs trailed -5 early in the first half, but Connecticut built its lead from that point, leading 9-25 at the half and increasing the margin in the second to a 7-52 final. Eafton Hill led the Deacon effort with 11 points, her sixth out of seven games that she reached double figures. Kristen Shaffer added points, her fourth straight double-figure scoring game. Wake was held to a season-low 35 percent shooting from the floor and 53.3 percent from the line, while giving up season-highs in both catgories (Huskies shot 2.1 percent from the field and 3.3 percent from the line). The rebounding margin was nearly equal, as UConn edged the Deacs 3-33 on the boards. Arizona State 9, Wake Forest 5 Two Deacons set new career highs, but it wasn t enough as Wake Forest closed out 2000 with a 5-9 loss to Arizona State in Tempe. ASU took a 3-2 lead with 2:19 to play in the first half, but Wake scored the last four points of the first stanza and ASU hung onto a 3-32 halftime lead. In the second half, the Sun Devils came out strong, forcing 12 turnovers in the first 11 minutes of the period. ASU took a 19-point lead with :53 to play (57-3) after holding WFU scoreless for over six minutes. The Deacs got back in the game when Tonia Brown hit a three-pointer with :27 left to start a 1- run, narrowing ASU s lead to seven (1-5) with 1:30 to play. The rally fell short, however, as ASU held Wake scoreless in the final 1:2 for the win. Kristen Shaffer posted her fifth-straight game of double-figure scoring, with a game-high 17 points on -of-11 shooting, while Tiffani Listenbee set a career-best with a -point effort. Brenda

Duke took advantage of 23 Wake Forest turnovers in the first half and took a 39-20 lead by halftime. The Blue Devils smothering defense held Wake Forest without a field goal for :02 midway through the first half. Eafton Hill led the way for the Deacs, scoring 12 points on 5- of- shooting. Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick led the squad in rebounding for the fifth straight game, pulling down five boards. LaChina Robinson added eight points and four rebounds, while sophomore center Johanna Bjorklund provided a second-half spark off the bench with six points, a block and a steal. Wake Forest 73, North Carolina 71 Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick hit two free throws with eight seconds remaining to help Wake Forest defeat North Carolina, 73-71, before a school-record,57 fans at Joel Coliseum. It was a game in which the lead changed hands eight times and neither team led by more than five points in the second half, but it didn't start out that way. UNC took an 1- lead in the early goings as WFU committed seven turnovers in the first seven minutes of the contest. A three-pointer by Kirkpatrick at the 12:31 mark of the first half sparked an -0 Deacon run, and the Deacs led 3-30 at the break. The lead evaporated early in the second half, however, as UNC began the period with a 15-5 scoring run. Kristen Shaffer then put on a show, scoring Wake s next 12 points to give the Deacs a 51- lead at the 9:27 mark. The Tar Heels converted on 9-of- shots from the free throw line to tie the game at 57. At the other end, the Deacs missed the front end of one-and-one foul shots on three straight trips to the line, but Kirkpatrick s two successful free throws gave the Deacs a four-point lead with eight seconds left. UNC made a layup with one second remaining to make the final score 73-71. Kirkpatrick led all scorers with 22, while Shaffer added 1 for the Deacs. Tonia Brown and Olivia Dardy each scored points. #13/1 NC State 75, Wake Forest 35 The Deacons caught a NC State team at a time when it was ripe and ready for a win after dropping three conference games. Pack senior Tynesha Lewis scored 19 points at Reynolds Coliseum to help No. 13 NC State rout Wake Forest 75-35. Lewis, who also had six rebounds and four assists in the game, scored 12 points in the first half and helped N.C. State take a 32-20 lead. The Wolfpack pulled away in the second half. Wake s Eafton Hill posted double figure scoring for the ninth time this season, leading WFU with points on 5-of-11 shooting. The Deacons started quickly, scoring 15 points in the first three and a half minutes and led 15-11 early, but then managed only two baskets and a free throw over the last 11:2 of the first half. #1/19 Clemson 7, Wake Forest 5 A full-court pressure defense kept the Deacons off their mark, as 1th-ranked Clemson posted a 7-5 victory over Wake Forest at Littlejohn Coliseum. Clemson jumped out to a 15-3 lead in the first five minutes of the game as WFU committed turnovers on its first five possessions and got just two shots in the first five minutes of play.
