4 Climbing the Career Charts Rebounds Basketball Game last summer in Greensboro, and one of her teammates on the East team was current WFU freshman Tracy lston. nother Deacon rookie, Eafton ill, played on the West squad in that game. a Deacon player this season. Shaffer is currently the Deacons leading scorer with 0.6 points per game, and is shooting 46.0 percent from the floor (63-of-37). Last Time Out: Wake Forest as Rough Showing t NC State... The Demon Deacons caught a NC State team at a time when it was ripe and ready for a win after dropping three conference games. Pack senior Tynesha Lewis scored 9 points on Sunday at Reynolds Coliseum to help No. 3 North Carolina State rout Wake Forest and give coach Kay Yow her 599th career win. Lewis, who also had six rebounds and four assists in the game, scored points in the first half and helped N.C. State take a 3-0 lead. The Wolfpack pulled away in the second half. Wake s Eafton ill posted double figure scoring for the ninth time this season, leading the team with 0 points on 5-of- shooting. The Deacons got off to a quick start, scoring 5 points over the first three and a half minutes and led 5- early, but then managed only two baskets and a free throw over the last : of the first half. Winning Ways gainst Non-CC Foes... With the win over Quinnipiac on Dec. 9, Wake Forest notched its seventh victory of the season equalling its win total from a year ago. What jumps out most from that statistic is Wake Forest s improved showing against non-conference teams. The Deacs are 7-3 outside the CC this season, with one more non-conference game (vs. Coastal Carolina on Jan. ) on the schedule. Wake Forest had not won seven non-cc games since the campaign, when they notched eight non-conference victories. (Finishing with a -6 record, the team won three CC games and one CC Tournament game.) The Deacs need to win one more game in order for the squad to qualify as head coach Charlene Curtis most successful season (the team posted eight overall victories). From the Line... Wake Forest has traditionally done well from the charity stripe, and this season it has a chance to break the school record for free throw percentage. The record is 7.9 percent, set in the season (33-of-449). lthough their worst performance from the stripe occurred in their last outing at NC State (3-of-6,.500), currently the Deacs are shooting 69. percent (73-of-50) from the stripe. Wake s best performance of the season thus far came against Coppin State, when it shot -of-5 for an.40 percentage. Three players are averaging over 0 percent from the line senior Kristen Shaffer (9-of-,.64), senior Olivia Dardy (7-of-3,.7) and freshman Bianca Brown (7-of-0,.50) although none of them have made enough trips to the line to qualify for the CC rankings. Shaffer owned a team-best streak of 4 straight makes before missing one at rizona State on Dec. 30. Statistical Bits n Pieces... With 475 career rebounds, senior Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick needs 5 more to crack the 500-rebound mark... only 0 players in Wake Forest history have reached that mark... all seven of sophomore LaTisha Pearson s field goals have taken place on the road (pp State, UConn, rizona State, Duke and NC State), netting a career-high four points at both Duke and NC State... three Deacons have assist-toturnover ratios of over.0 Val Klopfer (35-3,.5), Tonia Brown (-9,.) and Eafton ill (-,.)... Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick (5-of-5) is currently scoring on 60 percent of her shots, a team-high... although Wake s leading scorer for much of the season, Eafton ill, was held scoreless for the first time all year at rizona State, it gave her the chance to tie a team-high with three assists... through 4 games, four different players have been the scoring leader, six have been the rebounding leader and seven have led the squad in assists at least once... Eafton ill, Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick and Kristen Shaffer are the only three players who have led the team in all three categories... although she has not gone to the line against an CC opponent yet this season, junior Val Klopfer is still perfect from the stripe against league teams over her first two seasons (5-of-5). Sharp-Shooting Shaffer... The shift from the small forward position to shooting guard this year has proven to be a successful one for senior Kristen Shaffer. Shaffer, who stands 5-0, owned a fivegame streak of double-figure scoring before netting just two points at Duke last week, but responded with 6 points on 7of-9 shooting against North Carolina two days later. fter leading the team with 6 points against Virginia Shaffer on Dec. 9, she shattered her previous career-high of 7 with points versus New Orleans. She then added a pair of 0-point performances against both Quinnipiac and Connecticut and contributed 7 at rizona State. Over that five-game stretch, Shaffer shot a sizzling 59.3 percent from the field (3-of-54). er 77. shooting percentage against the Tar eels is the second-best performance by The Starting Five... Coach Curtis has used the same starting lineup in Wake s first games of the year, and the combination has proven successful. The lineup of forwards Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick and Eafton ill, center LaChina Robinson and guards Val Klopfer and Kristen Shaffer currently account for over 5 percent of the Deacons scoring output (59 of 90 points) and over 47 percent of rebounding (5 of 53). The starting five is also responsible for 55 percent of WFU s three-pointers (7 of 49) and 4 percent (6 of 54) of the team s blocked shots. Balanced ttack... While Wake s starting five is performing well, the real strength of the Deacon team is a deep bench. Curtis has used 0 players in all 4 games this season, and all 4 members of the roster have seen action in at least games. Ten players are averaging at least 0 minutes of playing time and every Deacon has also at least scored 4 points and pulled down five rebounds. Wake Forest is so balanced, in fact, that the first four games of this season all produced a different scoring leader, rebounding leader and assist leader. On the Offensive... Wake Forest s offensive gameplan has resulted in some higher scores for the Deacs in the early goings of the season. WFU is currently scoring 65.0 points per game,.6 points more than what it averaged last season (57.4). The Deacons have not posted a scoring average above 70 points since the season, when they scored 70.3 ppg. The school record for scoring average is 0.4, which was set in the 9-9 campaign. The 7 points Wake Forest scored this season against Richmond (Nov. 30) were the most since the Deacs posted an -7 victory over Florida State on Jan. 0, 996. Deacs Throw a Block Party... Wake Forest set a new school record on Dec. 5 against Liberty when it blocked shots. The previous record was 0 blocks versus South Carolina State on November 9, 99. Five different Deacons were responsible for breaking the record, led by centers LaChina Robinson and Johanna Björklund with three apiece. Forwards Eafton ill and Tiffani Listenbee each had two, while guard Tonia Brown recorded one. The -block performance was not only the best by an CC team so far this season, but better than any CC performance last season as well. The CC record for blocked shots in a game is 5, set on two different occasions. t its current pace (3.9 bpg), Wake Forest is on target to shatter the school record for blocks in a season. The previous record is 93, set in the 97- campaign. Through 4 games this season, Wake has 54 blocked shots. ill Named CC Rookie of the Week, Notches Double-Double... Wake Forest 77, Quinnipiac 6 (ot) Wake won its seventh game of the year, equalling its win total from a year ago, with a 77-6 overtime victory at Quinnipiac. The Deacons found themselves down early and were forced into playing catch-up for most of the game. Down by 0 at half, Wake s situation quickly escalated into a -point deficit with less than minutes left. The defense visibly stepped up and the Braves had a scoring drought of 4:3 and three subsequent droughts of over two minutes each, as Wake chipped away at the Quinnipiac lead. The Deacs went ahead 6-60 with 3 seconds remaining when Olivia Dardy, who had been playing with four fouls since the :56 mark, sank two free throws. Quinnipiac missed a shot on its next possession, then grabbed the offensive rebound, but appeared to throw the ball out of bounds as time expired. owever, it was determined that 0.6 seconds remained, giving the Braves had a second chance. layup at the buzzer sent the game into overtime. Dardy took over, however, scoring four buckets to finish with a game-high 4 points. The Deacs wrapped up the game by hitting five of six free throws. Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick tied her career high with 5 rebounds. Dardy notched her ninth career doubledouble with 0 rebounds. # Connecticut 07, Wake Forest 5 Wake s mission on Dec. was a tough one playing the topranked and defending national champion Connecticut. Playing before a crowd of 0,07 in Gampel Pavilion a WFU school record for a road game the Deacs were unable to contain UConn s quickness in transition, as the uskies started the game by scoring four quick points off a missed shot and a turnover on Wake s first two possessions. The Deacs trailed 6-5 early in the first half, but Connecticut built its lead from that point, leading 49-5 at the half and increasing the margin in the second to a 07-5 final. Eafton ill led the Deacon effort with points, her sixth out of seven games that she reached double figures. Kristen Shaffer added 0 points, her fourth straight double-figure scoring game. Wake was held to a season-low 35 percent shooting from the floor and 53.3 percent from the line, while giving up season-highs in both catgories (uskies shot 6. percent from the field and 3.3 percent from the line). The rebounding margin was nearly equal, as UConn edged the Deacs on the boards. rizona State 69, Wake Forest 54 Two Deacons set new career highs, but it wasn t enough as
