With over 18 years of collegiate coaching experience, there is no doubt that Cage-Bibbs is a force to be reckoned with. Entering her seventh year at Hampton, Cage-Bibbs has made it evident in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), and to non-conference opponents, alike what it takes to be a great coach. In what might have been her finest piece of coaching for her career, she led Hampton to the MEAC Championship (Regular Season and Tournament). The Lady Pirates registered best single-season conference record since the NCAA Division II National Championship team went perfect throughout the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). Hampton swept through the MEAC, winning 17-of-18 regular season conference match-ups with just a 10- player roster not including three wins during the MEAC Tournament. If one year is enough to make the whole campus start believing once again in the history of a powerful and winning program, then the future must be brighter than the stars above. Throughout the season, attendance jumped by over 2,300 fans to see the coach stake her claim as the second-winningest coach in the history of the program at HU. In just her first season at Hampton, Cage-Bibbs took the Lady Pirates basketball program into uncharted waters. She inherited a young team consisting of five starting guards and guided them to a piece of the MEAC Regular Season Championship honor with an overall record of 22-7 (16-2 MEAC). During the campaign, Cage-Bibbs implemented her own philosophies and tactics into the Lady Pirates basketball program. She began by recruiting an entirely new team, with the exception of three players MEAC Player of the Year (Danielle Dawson), MEAC Rookie of the Year (Felicia Bryant) and forward (Dionne Cleveland). After that, she continued the framework by adding a more demanding and challenging non-conference schedule. A schedule,in fact, that would promote and denote what Lady Pirates basketball was and still is all about. On this new non-conference schedule, Cage-Bibbs elected to face three nationally ranked opponents, including national powers Duke, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Vanderbilt. On the season, Cage-Bibbs proved to the nation that Hampton University could play and win against anyone as they finished with an overall record, while catapulting to their second MEAC regular season title. Before coming to Hampton, Cage-Bibbs served as head coach at her proud alma mater Grambling State. During her 13-year tenure with the Lady Tigers program, Cage-Bibbs led the Lady Tigers program to 244 victories, six Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) titles three of which came in a four-year span. In , Cage-Bibbs became the first coach in SWAC history to lead a team to an undefeated season (14-0) throughout conference play. Cage-Bibbs has compiled an overall record of , along with eight Coach of the Year (seven SWAC / one MEAC) awards in 18 years. Cage-Bibbs is a native of Choudrant, Louisiana. She received her Bachelor s Degree in Health and Physical Education from Grambling State University in She later went on to receive a Master s Degree in Sports Administration from Grambling State in She is married to Ezil Cage, a former professional football player with the New York Giants. CAGE-BIBBS VS. WAKE FOREST The meeting is the first ever for a team (Grambling State or Hampton) coached by Cage- Bibbs to face the Demon Deacons. 3 As Charlene Curtis enters her seventh season at the helm of the Wake Forest women's basketball program, her commitment to excellence and drive to bring the program to new heights is stronger than ever. Curtis was named the program's eighth head coach on May 7, 1997, bringing a wealth of coaching experience with her. In her first season at Wake Forest, Curtis began her rebuilding effort by instituting completely new offensive and defensive systems as well as a stronger work ethic to her team. The sweeping changes resulted in a season that was short on wins but long on progress. Although the Deacs posted just a 4-23 mark in , the team showed dramatic improvements in its style of play. Those improvements began to pay off in the next two seasons, as more skilled and athletic Deacon squads added to the win column (8-20 in , 7-21 in ). The 1999 squad was notable in that it improved two spots in the conference standings from the previous year to seventh place, and played its best ball down the season's home stretch, including a dazzling performance in the ACC Tournament. The team notched its first ACC road victory in four seasons with a win over Maryland in College Park, and also recorded an exciting win over rival North Carolina, its first victory over the Tar Heels since the season. The campaign began to show even more fruits of Curtis' labor, as the team opened the season with a 7-2 record, its best start in nine seasons. The Deacons also posted an 8-3 mark in non-conference play, and posted notable ACC wins over NCAA-bound Florida State as well as North Carolina before taking ACC champion Duke to overtime in the conference tournament. Wake Forest finished the season with an overall mark. In ,Curtis guided the Demon Deacons to a record, the best record of her WFU coaching tenure thus far and highest number of victories in five seasons. The team's 5-11 ACC record was also its best league mark since the campaign. The Deacs defeated North Carolina for the third straight season and topped Maryland by 18 points in the regular season finale - the largest margin of victory over an ACC opponent in 13 years. Another personal highlight for Curtis during the campaign was the team's win over Clemson on January 17 - a game that marked her 200th career victory as a head coach. Last season, Wake Forest continued its steady improvement. The Deacs finished with a overall record - the highest number of victories in the seven-year tenure under Curtis. Wake Forest also opened the season with a stellar 9-1 mark, its best start to a season since The Deacs registered an eight-game winning streak along the way - longest such streak in 10 seasons. If those numbers were not enough indication of the program's step forward, wake Forest also picked up victories over Virginia and at Maryland. The victory over the Terps in College Park was the first road win in the series in three years, while the win over the Cavaliers snapped a streak of 49-straight losses that dated back to the season. While Curtis' focus has been the rebuilding of the overall program during the past six seasons, she has guided individuals to postseason honors along the way, including thirdteam All-ACC pick Tiffani Listenbee (2003),Tonia Brown (2002), All-ACC honorable mention selections Olivia Dardy (1999), Alisha Mosley (2000) and Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick (2001) as well as ACC All-Freshman Team honorees Cotelia Bond-Young (2003), LaChina Robinson (1999) and Eafton Hill (2001). Additionally, the Wake Forest women's basketball team has kept up a high level of performance in the classroom, as 2000 Wake graduate Mosley was the recipient of the Robin Roberts/WBCA Sports Communications Scholarship and Kirkpatrick was an Academic All-America district selection in Deacon women's basketball has also been well represented on both the WFU Dean's List and the ACC Honor Roll over the years. During Curtis' tenure at Wake Forest, every fouryear player to come through the women's basketball program has earned her degree from the University. Curtis came to Wake Forest from the University of Connecticut, where she served as an assistant coach for two seasons under head coach Geno Auriemma. In that time, curtis helped lead the Huskies to a 67-5 record and two Big East conference championships. The team advanced to the NCAA Final Four in 1996 and to the Elite Eight in Curtis' previous head coaching experience includes six seasons ( ) at Radford University where she coached the Highlanders' first season of Division I competition. She was the Big South Coach of the Year in 1988 and 1990 and compiled a record during her tenure there. Her teams won three Big South Conference tournaments and captured the conference's regular season title four times. Her team appeared in the Women's National Invitational Tournament. Curtis then moved to Temple University, where she spent five seasons as the head coach ( ).She compiled a record and coached four Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team players before taking the position at UConn. Curtis also served as an assistant coach at Georgetown University in 1984 and, prior to that, was an assistant coach at the University of Virginia in from Curtis' résumé includes a wealth of international experience as well. She was an assistant coach with the USA Basketball teams that won a gold medal at the 1994 Goodwill Games, a bronze at the 1994 World Championships, and a gold at the 1991 World University Games. She was also a floor coach for the USA Basketball Olympic Trials in A 1976 graduate of Radford, Curtis earned, with honors, a Bachelor of Science degree in music education.while playing for the Highlanders, she was the school's first 1,000-point scorer (1,043 career points), a team captain, and named Most Valuable Player in 1975 and In 1995,she was inducted as a charter member of the Radford Sports Hall of Fame as both a coach and a player. While Premier Players shot 35.6% (26-for-73) from the floor, they went 16-of-18 from the charity stripe and 14-for-29 from 3-point range. DEACS ROUT WBC ILIRIJA WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- The Wake Forest women's basketball team defeated WBC Ilirija in Reynolds Gym.The Deacons used a stifling defense and a balanced scoring attack to win their first exhibition of the season. Senior Tonia Brown scored ten of her team-high 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field. Sophomore Keila Evans (14) and junior Erin Ferrell (14) were the other two players scoring in double figures. Evans added 10 rebounds to record her a double-double. Wake Forest jumped out to a quick 22-8 lead after a 15-2 run early in the first half.the run included a three-point play by senior Tracy Alston, which was followed by a Cotelia Bond-Young 3-pointer. After the run the Demon Deacons defense took over and forced 17 first-half turnovers. At the break, wake Forest led Eighteen points was as close as WBC Ilirija would get in the second half as the Deacs continued to expand the lead. Brown capped an 8-3 run to begin the half to make the score with 14:51 remaining. The Deacons cruised the rest of the way for the 25-point margin of victory. The Deacs' defense stole the ball 15 times and forced 28 turnovers, while only committing 16 of their own.wake Forest shot 36 percent from the field and 58 percent from the free throw line. The next game for the Deacons will be Monday night when they face Team adidas in the Joel Coliseum. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 pm. WAKE FOREST SIGNS A PAIR WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- Wake Forest women's basketball coach Charlene Curtis announced Thursday that Christen Brown and Tara Tate have signed national letters of intent to play women's basketball for the Demon Deacons in "Tara and Christen are winners," said the seventh year head coach. "They both play on successful high school teams and will bring a winning work ethic and attitude to our program." Brown, a 6-2 native of Dalton, Ga., can play either the guard or forward positions. Brown averaged 12.1 ppg and 10.0 rpg last season. She was selected to the Atlanta Journal Constitution Preseason All-Area squad. Brown was also chosen as a Gatorade Will to Win Athlete. This past summer, Brown competed at the adidas Top Ten Camp and was listed as the 47th best center in the most recent All-Star Girls Report. Tate, a 5-6 guard, attends Freedom H.S. in Morganton, N.C. Tate averaged 17.2 ppg, 5.6 rpg and 5.1 apg last season. She has been awarded all-tournament team selections in her conference each of the past two seasons. This summer, tate participated in the Youth Basketball of America Tournament and helped her team capture the National Championship. She was named the Most Valuable Player WAKE FOREST QUICK OUTLOOK With five freshmen and three sophomores, many might think that the edition of Wake Forest women s basketball is far too young and inexperienced to compete in the rigorous Atlantic Coast Conference. Yet, when you look deeper it becomes evident that the Demon Deacons are not that inexperienced. "Even though we may look young on paper, we are pretty experienced, said head coach Charlene Curtis. Hopefully with the leaders in this senior class -- Tonia Brown, Bianca Brown and Tracy Alston -- they will be able to carry this team, but they're going to have a lot of help from the younger players." Wake Forest returns three starters, including last season s ACC Rookie of the Year runner-up Cotelia Bond-Young and senior guard Tonia Brown (All-ACC third team in ). Along with Bianca Brown, Alston, Erin Ferrell and Liz Strunk, the Deacs return four players that averaged over 10+ minutes a game a year ago. "We are lucky to have a really experienced group of seniors, said Curtis. It is a definite positive for our team. They have all played significant minutes since their freshman year. They really have a feel for what it takes to win in the ACC. They have done a great job all this offseason and into the preseason showing the younger players what it takes to be successful. They need to continue making players accountable - on and off the floor." In ,Wake Forest opened the season on quite a tear, winning nine of their first 10 games, but the ACC season did not bring as much success. The Demon Deacons finished overall and 3-13 in the league. Of the 14 losses in ACC action, including the ACC Tournament defeat against Duke, seven were by five points or less. We had opportunities that we did not take advantage of, said Curtis. We did not finish games and we need to do that this year. "We have to continue to talk about it, said Curtis. When you talk about the mental part of the game, we need to tell ourselves that we are all winners. Winning breeds winning, and the more we win, the more we'll win. It is those defeats, more importantly the lessons in defeats, that give the Deacs the necessary pedigree to continue the climb toward the upper half of the ACC. We were talking about one or two possessions down the stretch, with real good opportunities to win, said Curtis. That was the difference between our record and a winning record.

It was the highest number of victories in seven seasons for the Demon Deacon program. Although Wake Forest got off to its best start (9-1) in 10 seasons, the Deacs struggled in conference play, enduring a nine-game losing streak in the middle of the season. They rebounded to win three of their last six games before finishing 3-13 in league games and finishing ninth in the ACC standings. Season highlights included an eight-game win streak in non-conference play, a victory over Virginia for the first time since 1978, and the first road victory at Maryland in three seasons. She was a third-team All-ACC selection who was also named to the conference s All-Defensive Team, a first for the Deacon program. For the third year in a row, junior Tracy Alston was named the team s Best Defensive Player. Alston also ranked among the team's top rebounders (4.4 rpg) and had 17 steals. Sophomore Erin Ferrell was honored as the team s Most Improved Player. Ferrell increased her production in nearly every aspect of her game from last year to this season, most notably in free throw shooting (.483 to.716), rebounding (3.1 to 4.2) and scoring (5.1 to 7.2 ppg). The Team MVP, Best Defensive and Most Improved Player awards were selected by a vote of the team and coaching staff. Sophomore Meredith Bell received the Iron Deac Award.
