Race 1 - Mornington Food Truck Carnival Plate - 1000 metres: Just Suzie - began awkwardly, shifted out and made slight contact with Cameo Lass and as a result apprentice rider Rose Pearson became unbalanced in the saddle. Approaching the 800m began to race keenly and continued to over-race for some distance.
Little Dink - slow to begin. Held up rounding the home turn and again held up for a clear run from the 100m until the winning post resulting in the mare not being fully tested. Alexandra Demure - began awkwardly. Held up for a clear run from the 400m until the 200m. Stella Effort - slow to begin. Raced keenly in the middle stages. Cameo Lass - near the 600m became unbalanced when negotiating that turn. Raced wide without cover. Exoterical - apprentice rider Brandon Stockdale stated his mount travelled well in the early and middle stages then failed to respond to his riding when placed under pressure in the straight. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Race 2 - Bayside Auto Group Plate - 1200 metres: Onlynineteen - fractious in its starting stall prior to being slow into stride. Held up for a clear run between the 400m and the 200m. Ammerland - slow to begin then shifted in and made contact with the hindquarters of Sestertia. Sestertia - bumped on the hindquarters at the start and became unbalanced. Near the 1100m shifted in and had to be steadied from the heels of Critical Rhythm. Follow Rivers - began awkwardly. Slithering Suzie - raced keenly when wide without cover. Gone Shopping - raced tight for some distance between Sergeant Sam and Critical Rhythm approaching the 200m and was eventually steadied by its rider near the 200m when Sergeant Sam shifted out slightly rounding the home turn. Critical Rhythm - held up for a clear run between the 400m and until the 200m. Approaching the 100m rider Nathan Rose lost the use of his right rein for a short distance. Lady Bullbars (NZ) - first placegetter; when questioned regarding his vigour over the final 50m, rider Daniel Stackhouse explained that he wasnt comfortable with the fillys action and for this reason did not ride out with his usual vigour. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Stewards questioned co-trainer Mr Trent Busuttin, who watched the race on TV interstate, and he did express some concern as to why his rider did not ride with vigour to the winning post. He explained the filly does have a choppy action, which is usual, and with the short back-up on a firmer track may have felt the effects. Stewards gave Daniel Stackhouse the benefit of the doubt however he was spoken to and reminded that he should, when possible, ride all of his mounts out with vigour to the end of the race. He was also reminded to report any concerns as soon as practical, regarding his mounts action.
Race 3 - European Auto Refinishers Plate - 1500 metres: Spanish Reef - fractious in its starting stall and was slow to begin. Held up between the 300m and the 200m. Touch Of Illusion - raced wide in the early stages until settling outside the leader passing the 1000m. Ma Bella Christa - raced ungenerously in the early and middle stages. Shewearsthepants (NZ) - held up for a clear run between the 400m and the 200m. Zero Patience - held up for a clear run between the 400m and the 200m. The track was upgraded from Good 4 to Good 3 at 2.14pm after the running of this race. Race 4 - Travel Managers Rachael A Megan S BM58 Handicap - 1000 metres: Black Ziggy - at the request of its trainer Mr Vin Malady, the mare was examined by the farrier at the gates which resulted in a delay to the start of the race. Steadied from the heels of Keep Courting approaching the 600m. Keep Courting - after racing wide without cover in the early stages was allowed to stride and take up a position outside the leader near the 700m. Bold Eavey - raced wide without cover from the 700m. Rider Daniel Stackhouse reported that the mare was blowing heavily on pulling up and there may be something amiss with it. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Wanted To Sing - held up for a clear run rounding the home turn. Russian Rick - rider Alan Creighton reported that the gelding raced flat and may not have backed up from its previous run at Stony Creek on January 3 rd. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities and trainer Mr Mark Stephenson advised the gelding would now have a freshen up. Race 5 - Stridefree by Peter Horobin BM58 Handicap - 1200 metres: Cerutty (NZ) - late withdrawal on veterinary advice at 7.35am. Eco Road - slow to begin. Believing - slow to begin.
Robert De Hero - slow to begin. Ha Long Bay - laid out rounding the home turn and in the straight. Apprentice rider Stephen Brown reported that after beginning well, his mount took the lead in the early stages however raced a little keenly and gave ground in the straight. Freshwater Reset - rider Jake Noonan reported his mount felt amiss. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Race 6 - Argyle Maintenance BM58 Handicap - 1200 metres: Loquacious Lass - slow to begin. Rider Craig Newitt reported that the mare was held up in the early part of the straight and again over the concluding stages when making ground. He added that Loquacious Lass would be better suited to races of further distance than todays event. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Wilaudie - began awkwardly and lost ground. Vonnida - began awkwardly. Exclusive Heights - raced keenly in the middle stages. Miss Procyon - raced wide without cover from the 700m. Crafty Eva - raced wide without cover for the majority of the event. Aglaia - when questioned regarding his tactics, rider Chris Symons reported that after beginning well from its inside barrier and with blinkers on, his mount took the lead without any pressure. A post race veterinary examination identified the presence of blood at both nostrils. The mare shall not without permission of the Stewards: (a) be trained, exercised or galloped on any racecourse for a period of two months thereafter; (b) start in any race for a period of three months, and then only after a satisfactory gallop of at least 1000m in the presence of a Steward. Race 7 - Bayside Suzuki Summer Racing BM64 Handicap - 1500 metres: Heza Magic Man - connections advised would attempt to settle behind the leaders from the inside gate; settled behind the leaders. Raced keenly in the early stages and approaching the 1200m crossing was awkwardly placed close to the heels of Shanghai Rooster. Near the 1000m was bumped on a couple of occasions when pressured by Rising Hope (Jye McNeil) which shifted in in an attempt to gain cover; Jye McNeil was shown footage of the incident and reminded of his obligations when shifting ground not to cause interference to other runners. Held up for a clear run between the 500m and until the 200m.
The Contortionist - began awkwardly. Rider Craig Newitt reported that his mount travelled well in the early and middle stages however did not respond to his riding when placed under pressure. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Rising Hope - raced wide without cover. De Nederlanden - near the 150m was momentarily held up and shifted to the outside of Shanghai Rooster to gain clear running. Shanghai Rooster - when questioned regarding his tactics, apprentice Brandon Stockdale reported from the wide barrier draw and after beginning well he rode his mount forward to take up the lead rather than race wide without cover. Rokeby Red - rider Ethan Brown reported the mare travelled well during the running of the race then when placed under pressure failed to respond to his riding.
