The schedule is getting busier and the competition is heating up as teams vie for playoff spots in their respective tiers. The Central Alberta Hockey League ends on February 20 th with playoffs set to begin the following weekend. Many Drumheller teams are poised to play an extended season and compete for their league banner. Team managers are reminded to try to book any TBD games as soon as possible and all of those with games cancelled due to weather need to try to reschedule those as quickly as you can. CAHL Director Norm Fournier reports that the Central Alberta Hockey League executives would like to remind all coaches, players and parents to reduce abuse to officials as referees are scarce and this is only driving them away. Drumheller Minor Hockey Referee Assignor, Shallyn Schinnour echoes that sentiment saying we have very few local referees and we may have to look to bringing out of town officials in for many of our games for the Bantam and Midget levels. Anyone interested in becoming a referee, please call Shallyn for more information. Good luck with the rest of the season, Raptors!! DMHA Teams Gearing up for Provincial Playdowns As league play heats up in the valley, so does the battle to vie for a provincial title. Provincial qualifying games have already begun for some of our teams as the first round of Zone Playoffs is set to be complete this weekend. All of our Tier 2 teams from Atom to Midget are participating in Provincial playdowns this season as well as our Bantam 5 team. Depending on the number of teams vying for a Provincial berth from each zone, Hockey Alberta sets up a series of playoff rounds. A home and home series 2-game total goal system is used to determine the winner. As 2011 Provincial hosts, the Greene Construction Pee Wee Raptors will only compete in the final round of qualifiers giving them the chance to still earn a Zone 6 title. Stayed tune for next month s edition of Raptor Rambles for results for all Drumheller teams provincials qualifiers.
Raptor Rambles Page 2 of 6 Team Updates They all give 100% no matter if they win or lose The Bertram Drilling Midget Raptors are half way through their 2010/2011 season and are currently sitting in the #2 spot for their league. This is quite an accomplishment considering the team only has 11 skaters and 2 goalies. They have a very strong offensive side for putting those goals in the net that consists of Hayden Bertram, Tyler Hodge, Chris Lacher, Lucas Martinez, Connor Travis, Colton Wolf and alternate goaltenders, Brett Hempel and Joel Pozzo who have been taking turns playing out which helps out the team. Their aggressive defensive side consists of Kevin Devaleriola, Tyson Powell, Brandon Rowbottom, Carter Lowen and Robert Sinclair who do a great job clearing the front of their net. As with any Midget team they have experienced some ups and downs but since the start of 2011 the team is connecting and it will not take long for them to advance to 1 st place for their division. The team has had a fund raiser which did extremely well and thanks to hockey mom Trudy Rowbottom for coordinating this. The money raised will help pay for the boys to attend a windup tournament at the end of March. As well the team received new DMH coats in November from a community sponsor, thanks to them!! With playoffs just around the corner the team has 6 more games to help them advance to the finals. They will have to play smart and keep those penalty minutes down which shouldn t be a problem with this great group of kids. Take some time out of your busy schedule and check out the Bertram Drilling Midget Raptors at their next home game February 5 th, 2011 at 8:30pm!!! The McDonald s Novice Raptors will be hosting a tournament Jan 29 & 30 with 5 other teams attending. Our team has had strong support through parent donations as well as local businesses for our tournament. We even have a pizza lunch being provided by Stavros for every team attending. We have received generous donations from the Chrysler Dodge Caravan Novice Program, Cenovus Energy, and Flomax. These cash donations have paid for all of our tournaments so far and team hoodies and toques. Our players and their families are very thankful for the support. We were tournament Champions at the Bassano tournament in December. Our team enjoyed a Christmas Party at the bowling alley where all players and their families attended. Despite a difficult league schedule, the kids are playing great and are really coming together as a team. They all give 100% on the ice, no matter if they win or lose. The Hiway 9 PeeWee Raptors hosted 5 teams this weekend (January 15-16) in Hussar We would like to thank all our sponsors for supporting our team, they were amazing donating awesome raffle and auction items. We would also like to thank the association and concession girls at the Hussar arena for letting us use the curling room for all our guests between games (they were very impressed especially for their little ones) and cooking up some amazing food, it was great! Our team won the "B" Final, they were so excited! They won their first game against the Springbank Spitfires 6-4, their second game they lost to Medicine Hat Oilers 10-1, the final, however, they won against the High River team 7-4 bringing home the trophy (sticks and gloves were flying!). All teams had a blast and we are now looking forward to attending the Sylvain Lake Tournament in March!
