1 General Notes Netter series PKL E pneumatic impactors conform to regulation 94/9/EC (ATEX product directive) equipment group II and are suitable for use in potentially explosive areas of category 2 (2G und 2D 85 C (T6)), in zones 1, 2, 21 and 22. When used in zone 1 with explosive gas, the exhaust air from the check valve must be safely discharged (see chapter 6 Installation). Furthermore, these explosion protected impactors comply with the EC machine directive 98/37/EEC. Standards DIN EN ISO 12100 part 1 and part 2, EN 1127-1 and EN 13463-1 have been observed in particular. PKL E impactors are preferably to be installed with an EE kit, to generate noise insulated impacts (rubber hammer effect). General areas of application are knocking adhesive bulk material from container walls (e.g. silos, funnels, filter outlets, pipelines and reactors) and emptying residues from weighing containers. Also for preventing bridging and ratholing, as long as the bulk material continues to flow. The use in potentially explosive areas is possible provided the valid regulations (among others 1999/92/EC) and the corresponding operation regulations of the operating company are observed. Before using this impactor, the operator must ensure that there is no risk of explosion due to the introduction of impact energy. The impactor may also be used in dusty environments, but not in or under water or other liquids. The drive medium is clean (filtered), lubricated compressed air or nitrogen. Special features: High impact force Low air consumption Noise insulation by means of elastomer insert Earthing screw on housing (exception: vibrator made of stainless steel) The following instruction and warning symbols are used in this operating instructions. Note on important procedures Important note on procedures to be especially observed Warning of a danger spot Environmentally friendly disposal Important note on explosion protection 3

Please note when planning: For automatic operation, all PKL E must be operated with a control, e.g. AP, PAP or SPS (see accessories). The maximum impact frequency must not be exceeded. Impactor types PKL 135 E and PKL 150 E can be equipped with an automatic control (ST kit). The automatic impact frequency must be regulated by means of an additional throttle. 4

Type Identification The type identifications of PKL E impactors have the extension /3, /4, /5 or /6. These numbers are derived from the optimum operating pressure, i.e. the PKL 150/4 E achieves optimum efficiency at an operating pressure of 4,1 bar. The actual air pressure set at the regulator must not exceed the optimum operating pressure by more than 1 bar (maximum pressure). For PKL E impactors the air pressure should be set to at least the optimum operating pressure. For the PKL 150/6 E this is 5,9 bar. PKL E impactors can be used in dusty environments. Duration of Operation Long periods of operation will change the technical performance data (wear). Noise Level The PKL E is delivered with the EE kit as standard. It is preferable to install it with this kit, as it weakens the impulse (rubber hammer effect). The sound level with the EE kit is approx. 75 db(a) (individual sound event). Depending on the impact sequence, the continuous sound level will be lower. The noise emitted by the device can be damped by means of a cover (available upon request). This only makes sense if the impacted steel sheets are also damped (e.g. using heat insulation material). 3 Design and Function Function PKL E The pneumatic intermittent impactor is effectively a pneumatic hammer. It is controlled by means of a 3/2-way valve, which can be operated by hand or via a duty/pause control unit (available as an accessory). On the PKL 150 E this valve is integrated in the valve head. A diaphragm (PKL 150 E) or a control piston 4 (PKL 135 E and PKL 220 E) closes the spring chamber above the piston. The compressed air flows through the integrated air duct into the space below the piston 13 and presses it against one or two springs 10, 11. Upon ventilation via the 3/2-way valve, the air from the space below the piston is rapidly evacuated into the spring chamber. The springs shoot the piston against the elastomer insert (EE kit 28), generating a rubber hammer effect. ST Kit (only for PKL 135 E and PKL 150 E) The optional ST kit 7 connects the piston chamber with the 3/2-way valve. The 3/2-way valve is automatically switched over when the piston opens the pilot port. With an ST kit the PKL E strikes continuously, as long as pressure is applied. When using PKL 135 E ST the maximum length of the control hose is 1 m. The control valve for the ST kit must be attached to a mounting panel. Circuit diagrams can be found in chapter 6 Assembly. The maximum impact frequency must not be exceeded. 6

4 Safety PKL E impactors are manufactured according to the current EC regulations. Before using these impactors, the operator must ensure that introduction of impact energy does not present a risk of explosion. The installation and operation of the impactors must be in accordance with the ATEX directives for operation in potentially explosive environments and the established accident prevention regulations. For operation in Zone 1 with explosive gas, the exhaust air from the check valve must be safely discharged. PKL E impactors operate on compressed air. Ensure that the compressed air supply is shut off during installation. Disconnect the air supply before starting work on the impactors or supply lines. All hose connections must be tightly fastened before starting operation. If a pressurized hose becomes loose it can cause injury. Pneumatic interval impactors PKL 135 E, PKL 150 E and PKL 220 E are open on the impact side. Ensure that the impact piston remains in the housing during installation! Impactors and parts of the construction may become loose, due to vibration. Falling parts can cause material damage or injury. PKL E impactors are to be attached using only the supplied NBS fastening kits. PKL 135 E impactors must be installed with a damper kit. The PKL 220 E must be installed with a damper ring and damper plate. The PKL E is supplied with an EE kit as standard. It is preferably to be installed with this kit. Screwed connections and air supply connectors should be checked after 1 hour of operation and then at regular intervals (generally once per month), tightened and secured with Loctite, if necessary. In critical installation situations, it is possible to secure the impactor with an additional clamp and safety rope. Attachment of the PKL E intermittent impactor without an EE kit is only possible using suitable weld consoles and with written permission from kéííéêsáäê~íáçå. 7

The noise level may exceed 75 db(a) in the vicinity of the impactor or connected constructions. Ear protectors are necessary when working in the noise area, if the noise level exceeds 85 db(a). Modifications to the device can alter the characteristics of the impactors or destroy the device, and result in the rejection of all warranty claims. Failure to comply with the operating instructions will also result in the rejection of all warranty claims. Permissible Operating Conditions: Drive Medium Clean (filter 5 µm, class 3) lubricated compressed air or nitrogen Operating pressure PKL 135/4 E: 3 bar to 5,2 bar PKL 135/6 E: 5 bar to 6,9 bar PKL 150/3 E: 2,5 bar to 3,9 bar PKL 150/4 E: 3 bar to 5,1 bar PKL 150/5 E: 4 bar to 5,7 bar PKL 150/6 E: 5 bar to 6,9 bar PKL 220/4 E: 3,5 bar to 5 bar PKL 220/6 E: 5,5 bar to 7 bar These operating pressures must not be exceeded or fallen short of. Impact Frequency 10 blows max. in succession at an impact frequency of 15 blows/min and 180 blows/h. This impact sequence must not be exceeded. Ambient Temperature -20 C to 60 C The specified ambient temperatures must not be exceeded or fallen short of during operation. Connection to ground via the earthing connection and the mounting surface is compulsory. On stainless steel units earthing is achieved directly via the mounting surface. Electrical conductivity via this surface must therefore be assured (clean, unpainted mounting surface). Impactors must not be opened in zones with an explosive atmosphere. The compressed air supply and discharge lines (hoses) must be suitable for use in explosion protected rooms. 8

The following maintenance work must be regularly carried out by an authorized specialist: a) Inspection of screwed connections b) Inspection of earthing connection c) Inspection of air supply lines d) Inspection of silencer e) Check total number of impacts Additional service and maintenance work, including the service after 500,000 impacts, is strictly to be carried out by kéííéêsáäê~íáçå. Please observe the safety regulations in chapter 4 when servicing the device. 5 Transport and Storage Check the packaging for possible signs of transport damage. In the event of damage to the packaging, check that the contents are complete and undamaged. If there is any damage, inform the shipping agent. The impactors are packed ready-toinstall. The type label is attached to the impactor. Accessories and add-on parts (e.g. fastening kits NBS1 or NBS2) are delivered loosely, unless otherwise agreed. Special transport conditions are not specified. The units should be stored in a clean, dry environment. PKL E impactors must be oiled before going back into storage: pour compressed air lubrication oil into the air inlet port and activate the PKL E briefly. Before activating, screw the PKL E down or clamp it to a plate. Remember to use ear protectors. 6 Installation The storage temperature should be between 40 C and 60 C. (This does not apply to the operating temperature; compare with chapter 4 SAFETY Permissible Operating Conditions ). Ensure that the compressed air supply is shut off during installation or when working on the impactor or air supply lines. The mounting position must be carefully selected to rule out the possibility of corroded steel components striking the PKL E impactors (aluminium housing). The PKL E intermittent impactor is first ready for use after installation, since only then is the piston chamber sealed. Pneumatic interval impactors PKL 135 E, PKL 150 E and PKL 220 E are open on the impact side. Ensure that the impact piston remains in the housing during installation! 9

Mounting the Impactor The mounting surfaces must be absolutely level (± 0.1mm flatness), so that the impactor has full contact with the mounting surface and there is no warping of the housing when the fastening screws are tightened. The surfaces should also be free of any paint residues or weld burns. Tension in the housing can cause mechanical damage. PKL E impactors should be screwed to a reinforcement bar or weld console. Suitable weld consoles (see adjacent diagram) can be supplied by Netter (see appendix). If the impactor is to be used in hard-impacting mode or an alternative weld console is used, written permission from kéííéêsáäê~íáçå is required. Please note that the PKL E impactor is open at the bottom and can only work when it is mounted on a flat surface. The use of an NBS fastening kit is compulsory, in order to ensure the safe operation of the PKL E pneumatic intermittent impactor. The damper set NBS 135 and the optional EE kit are to be used when installing the PKL 135 E. 1 Mounting washer 2 Elastomer spring 3 Washer The screw connection is correctly tightened when the distance between the PKL 135 E housing and the screw head is 15 mm (Installation Instructions NBS 135). The screwed attachments should be secured using a thread locking agent (e.g. Loctite). For the PKL 220 E with an EE kit, the use of fastening kit NBS 3 (Fig. A) or NBS 4 (Fig. B) together with a damper ring 23 and damper plate 24 is compulsory. An optional bronze impact plate 21 is also available. 10

For the PKL 150 E fastening kit NBS 1 (Fig. A) or NBS 2 (Fig. B) must be used. The use of an EE kit is preferable. For the PKL 220 E fastening kit NBS 3 (Fig. A) or NBS 4 (Fig. B) must be used. Installation Instructions: Tighten screws 1 until the damper spring 2 blocks. Then loosen screws 1 by 1-2 turns. The damper spring 2 should no longer be blocked. Each screw 1 must be secured with a drop of thread locking agent (e.g. Loctite). Please observe the technical data sheet delivered with these accessories. NBS 1 and NBS 3 Installation Instructions EE Kit: The EE kit reduces the sound level. See installation instructions for the EE kit. Connection to ground via the earthing connection and the mounting surface is compulsory. On stainless steel units earthing is achieved directly via the mounting surface. Electrical conductivity via this surface must therefore be assured (clean, unpainted mounting surface). Please note during installation: the permissible temperature range must not be exceeded during operation, see chapter 4, Safety. Versions for other temperature ranges are available upon request. In critical installation situations it is necessary to secure the unit with an additional safety rope. When using compressed air as the drive medium, it must be clean (filtered). Unfiltered compressed air can lead to excessive wear, clogging of the silencer or complete break-down of the impactor (piston seizure). The air supply must be securely attached. filter recommended 11

Standard Installation PKL E For all installations a cock valve 1 to shut off the main line and a service unit 2 are recommended. The service unit should consist of filter, regulator and mist lubricator. Standard Installation for PKL 135 E and PKL 220 E A 3/2-way valve 3 must be used for the control. The impact occurs during ventilation. The charge and ventilation times are determined by a duty/pause control 4. Electrical or pneumatic controls are available. For individual operation the 2-, 3- or 4- way valve 3 may also be installed at a greater distance (10m to 15m). or Standard Installation for PKL 150 E A 3/2-way valve 3 must be used for the control of the PKL 150 E. The diagram shows the control of several PKL 150 E being operating in parallel. Installation for PKL 135 E with an ST Kit With this type of installation the PKL 135 E continues knocking for the duration of the duty-on period set on the duty/pause control AP 115 4. The maximum impact sequence must not be exceeded. The maximum length of the hose from the valve 7 to the PKL 135 E is 1m. When the piston is pressed against the springs a control port is opened, whereby valve 7 is ventilated via the by-pass 6 and the impact is triggered. The valve then opens again and charges the PKL 135 E. 12

Installation Instructions PKL 135 E with ST Kit: All screwed attachments are to be secured using the supplied thread locking agent (glue). Connect the throttle check valve to the double nipple and the control valve. Mount the silencer on the control valve. Install the quickscrew attachments and sealing rings in the throttle check valve and the control valve. Remove the screw plug from the PKL 135 E and install the quick-screw attachment and sealing ring. Make the hose connections (maximum hose length 1m) according to the circuit diagram with ST and tighten the quick-screw attachments securely. The control valve is to be attached to a mounting panel. See also: Installation Instructions ST Kit for PKL 135 E. Installation for PKL 150 E with ST Kit The ST 6 kit connects the control port on the valve to a port on the housing. The piston reverses automatically, as long as compressed air is applied with sufficient pressure. The maximum impact frequency must not be exceeded. The impact sequence can be adjusted using a throttle 5 between the impactor and the 2/2 or 2/3-way valve 3. When using a duty/pause control 4 the PKL E will strike several times during the duty-on period. Retrofitting the PKL 150 E with an ST Kit: Install the ST kit on the side of the PKL 150 E. The dummy plugs and quick-screw attachment must first be removed. Exchange the silencer with an L-screw attachment. See also: Installation Instructions ST Kit for PKL 150. Recommended Cross-Sections for Valves and Hoses PKL 135 E and PKL 150 E: Control lines, control valves: 4-6 mm NW Main air: 4-6 mm NW PKL 220 E: Control lines, control valves: 4-6 mm NW Main air: 6-9 mm NW For simultaneous actuation of several PKL E, plan larger cross-sections for the main line up to the distribution to the individual units. Check List for Installation: 1) Consider the expected operating temperature. 2) Is the EE kit installed? 3) Secure fastening screws. Attach earth connection. 4) Install service unit (filter, regulator if required), valves and supply line. 5) Have fastening screws been locked? Check! Are air supply lines glued in? Check! 6) Has the information on hose length and nominal width been observed? 7) Has the unit been secured to prevent it falling down? 13

7 Start-Up / Operation The use of lubricated compressed air is compulsory for PKL E impactors: Fill mist lubricator with acid and resin free pneumatic oil, ISO viscosity class according to DIN 51519, VG 5 to VG 15. Recommendation: Klüber AIRPRESS 15" for temperatures up to 60 C. When choosing a lubricator, please bear in mind that the air consumption of the PKL E is very low. The selection of a lubricator is dependent on the number of impactors to be operated simultaneously. Units with G1/8 und G1/4 connections are recommended. Larger units may not respond. Adjust to the lowest number of drops. AIRPRESS 15 is a suitable lubricant. ATTENTION: Adjust the number of drops with the device running. Only after the mist lubricator has been adjusted and is functioning correctly is the device ready for operation. PKL E may only be operated in timed mode. Impact Frequency: 10 blows max. in succession at an impact frequency of 15 blows/min and 180 blows/h. This impact sequence must not be exceed. For operation in Zone 1 with explosive gas, the exhaust air from the check valve must be safely discharged. Check List for Start-Up: 1) Adjust the mist lubricator. 2) Check hose connections before opening the compressed air supply. 3) Regulate the frequency using a throttle. Do not set the frequency higher than necessary (standing times, noise). 4) Screwed connections and air supply lines should be retightened after 1 hour of operation (after initial start-up) and then checked at regular intervals (generally once per month) and tightened, if necessary 14

8 Service / Maintenance Please observe the safety regulations in chapter 4 when servicing the device. Retightening: Screwed connections should be retightened after 1 hour of operation (after initial start-up) and then checked at regular intervals (generally once per month), tightened and secured (e.g. with Loctite), if necessary. The specified torque must be observed (see chapter 6). Before starting inspection and service work, shut off the compressed air supply and secure it against unintended activation! Regularly check the attachment of the impactor, the compressed air supply and upstream service unit preferably at monthly intervals. Mist Lubricator: Ensure that the lubricator works correctly (does oil content fall? Number of drops/min.?). Refill oil. Filter: Renew the filter insert, empty the filter as required, clean the filter insert (wash out). The following maintenance work must be regularly carried out by an authorized specialist: f) Inspection of screwed connections g) Inspection of earthing connection h) Inspection of air supply lines i) Inspection of silencer j) Check total number of impacts Additional service and maintenance work, including the service after 500,000 impacts, is strictly to be carried out by kéííéêsáäê~íáçå. Please observe the safety regulations in chapter 4 when servicing the device. 9 Troubleshooting Fault Possible Cause Troubleshooting Remedy No function Silencer soiled Silencer on PKL E and 3/2-way valve Clean silencer on valve.
