Photo: APSPR/OT Carlos Cabrero, 35, of San Juan became the repeat circuit champion by advancing the final of the event where he finished second to Brian Toth, 23, of Isabela in an exciting man-on-man clash. Cabrero won his second straight title with an impressive display of backhand surfing in the 4-6 foot right handers at the world reknowned break. Cabrero had actually clinched the championship tally in the quarter finals when he defeated Leslie Bursian of San Juan to gain the 410 points and put the title out of reach of his nearest rival, Gabriel Escudero, 25, of San Juan. Escuderos Campaign ended when he was eliminated in a shock upset in the quarters finals by the 41 years old veteran Juan Ashton Cabrero rode the emotional momentum of his title past another younger rival, Leif Engstrom, 21, in the semis.
However, in the 30 minute final the bustering performance of Brian Toth, as well as an untimely 10 minute lull at the end of the heat conspired to leave Cabrero holding another second place trophy. Toth was clearly the in-form surfer of the event, having advanced over two New Jersey surfers. Matt Keenan and Rob Kelly in the quarters and semifinals. Another second place finish was a bitter pill for Cabrero to swallow, as he was surfered the unique and dubious distinction of placing in four consecutive Puerto Rican Finals without a victory. However, his unmatched consistency has been the factor that scored two straight titles as well as the distinction of never having finished outside the top five during the eight year history of the APSPR ( Association Professional Surfing Puerto Rico). Several others young surfers made auspicious debits in the high performance Domes Arena, including semi-finalists Rob Kelly,20, and Leif Engstrom, 21, a Montauk, NY Transplant, now living in Puerto Rico. Engstrom was the winner of the prestigious Coppertone Best Performance Awards, in the amount of $500.00, for his 9.0 in an early round ride. He secured near perfect score by boosting a high-flying air reverse maneuver in one of the rare quality lefts at the predominantly righ-hand break.
On the women s side of the competition, the event was won by youthful Quincy Davis, 14, Another NY transplant, the teenaged blonde has become the dominant female competitor on the island as she accomplished the remarkable double distinction of also winning the 2009-2010 APSPR woman title.
