CELEBRATING 14 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Nashville Chapter - American Singles Golf Association August 2007 The President s Corner If you have not upgraded your golf clubs lately it might be time to reevaluate your equipment. The technological improvements over the last 5-6 years will benefit most of you. Yes you can buy a better game. I am hitting longer drives at 52 than I did at 42. Every time the manufactures came out with a new driver I gained 10 to 15 yards. This does not mean you have to spend a lot of money on new drivers. I always stayed two generations behind the new releases. I waited until the price fell below $200. There is a category of irons called super game improvement irons. If you don t have time to practice these irons will be the most forgiving. So instead of dumping your fat shot in the bunker they might give you that extra yard or two that you are begging for while watching your ball head for the beach. Unless you practice a lot replace your 3, 4, and maybe you 5 iron with a hybrid. This has been a major advancement in game improvement for the high handicap player. The hybrid will let you get the ball airborne easier than a long iron. Whatever club you buy the shaft is the most important component of the club. I cannot overstress this point. The shaft is the heart of the club. If you don t get a shaft that fits your swing speed you will not get the maximum benefits from the club head. The most important club in your bag is the putter. I still see golfers using an old bullseye putter. This putter and ones like it are the least forgiving putter. A 3-foot putt counts 1 stroke just like a 300 yard drive. Go out and find one of the new high moment of inertia putters that will be the most forgiving. Don t pay retail, go to one of the preowned web sites for your best deal. ~Robin Roper, President Out of Town Events We have had a great response to the Chattanooga Golf Outing the weekend of August 24-26. My records have the following Nashville folks signed up to attend: Larry Anderson, Jean Arnold, Roz Beard, Bob Blaylock, Gary Carson, Judy Cummings, Amanda Faulk, Pam Frakes, Steve Grear, Dan Gurgiolo, Trish Gregory, Joe Huskey, Tommy James, Mike Kelley, Ann Kelly, Mickey Latella and friend Donna, Jim Lazenby, Peggy Lee, Lynn Lutgens, Ed Manson, Sandy Martin, Mary Martin, Jerry McNall, Diane Mitchell, Linda Oddo, Susan O'Reilly, Bill Porter, Joe Riggins and friend Katherine Marra, Kathy Robbins, Robin Roper, Bobby Russell, Charles Smith, Jerry Strebel, Conni Thran, Morene Townley, John Wagner and Darrell Westbrook. Please advise me of any changes and send in your Registration Form and payment if you have not already done so. The venue is as follows: Optional play on Friday, August 24th will be at the Canyon Ridge Club starting at 11:00. This will be an opportunity to play this championship course before it goes totally private in October. The holes are routed through a dramatic setting of mountain meadows, streams and natural rock landscapes on top of Lookout Mountain. Elevated tees provide magnificent views in every direction. An ever changing wind cools the course in the summer and chal- Upcoming Event: Dates for New Years in Tampa are Dec 29 - Jan 1st. Dates are contracted and firm. You can view the course at the golfcanyonridge.com website. The fee for Friday play will be $55 and will be paid individually directly to the golf course on Friday. We do need confirmation of the players to be able to set the pairings. We will play Linda Yeargan's home course, Eagle Bluff Golf Club on Saturday morning, August 25th. We expect to have a shot gun start at 8 AM to avoid the hot humid late afternoon sun. Eagle Bluff is nestled atop several distinctive bluffs overlooking Chickamauga Lake and Harrison Bay. This course provides a challenging, scenic and memorable experience for golfers of all levels. Eagle Bluff's contoured and rolling fairways, uphill and downhill elevation changes, meticulously maintained greens and picturesque backdrop create a breathtaking mountain course. You can view the holes on this course at the eaglebluffgolf.com website. We have an 8 AM shotgun start on Sunday at the Bear Trace at Harrison Bay. The second of the six Bear Trace courses to open in Tennessee is surrounded by both water and heavily wooded land, making an ideal setting for the course. Although water touches 12 fairways, there is more than sufficient room to hit safely. Most greens are open in front, which makes the course more user-friendly for high handicap players and allows run-up shots. The emphasis on playability is clearly evident. You can review this course at the beartrace.com/harrison website. We have lodging at the Best Western Heritage Inn in Chattanooga located close to both golf courses and nightly entertainment and dancing. The cost for the weekend will be $160 plus food and the optional golf. This will cover the 2 nights double occupancy lodging and the 2 rounds of golf on Saturday and Sunday. The cost for those not needing lodging will be $90. Those requesting a single room will be an additional $35 per night or $ 70 for the weekend. NOW IS THE TIME TO SIGN UP FOR THE MYRTLE BEACH OUTING THE WEEKEND OF NOVEMBER 16-18. I am not asking for payment yet and the registration form will be in the September Newsletter. The event will be a sellout. We had 220 players last year but are limiting the attendance to one golf course with a maximum of 144 players this year. We expect to be staying at the Courtyard Marriott at Barefoot Landing close to 2001 and other entertainment venues. Optional golf on Friday will be at the Brickyard Plantation while playing two "CAT" courses, Tiger's Eye and Panthers Run on the weekend. If you sign up now, I will keep your spot open if you fill out the registration and pay by October 1. My judgment is that it is IMPORTANT TO SIGN UP NOW. I will automatically cancel you if you don't register by October 1. This will be our 6th annual visit to Myrtle Beach and we had over 30 from Nashville attending last years event. The cost for the base package is expected to be under $200. ~Bob Blaylock CHATTANOOGA REGISTRATION - AUGUST 24-26, 2007 NAME GOLF HDCP AVG.SCORE ROOMMATE FRIDAY GOLF (Y/N) SINGLE ROOM (ADDITIONAL $70) (Y/N) SMOKING ROOM (Y/N) $160($230 IF SINGLE) CHECK PAYABLE TO BOB BLAYLOCK - AUGUST 10 DEADLINE 6004 HILLSBORO ROAD, NASHVILLE, TN 37215 EMAIL BOB NOW TO SIGN UP AND JOIN THIS FUN OUTING.

Beautiful Day at Smyrna The weather was hot some shots were not! The attendance was low and the scores were too! Twenty of us had a great time at Smyrna Golf Course July 14 th. After golf, we invaded RAZZ s for drinks, eats, and more fun. Smyrna Winners: 1 st Place Team Mike Cherry Sandy Martin Mike Kelley Lucinda Hall 2 nd Place Team Bobby Russell Steve Grear Jerry McNall Susan O Reilly Jim and Bobby at monthly meeting 3 rd Place Team Jim Lazenby Peggy Lee Bob Blaylock Ann Kelly Closest to the Pin #2 Phillip Earles #5 Steve Grear #14 Charles Smith #17 Bob Blaylock Longest Drive #7 Peggy Lee #13 Mike Cherry Our Next outing is at Champions Run, and I will update you on the result of that event next month. Check out the schedule, and sign up early. Thanks for supporting our local events. That makes my job worthwhile. ~Jim Lazenby Social Scene Our group seems to be really busy. The 19th hole after Mongomery Bell was at Jonathan's Grill. There was at least 30 of us eating and laughing. Everyone seemed to have a really great time. After the Smyrna outing last week, the group went to Razz Bar and Grill. Some ate inside and listened to jazz and the rest were outside. Again it was a great time. Ivories is the place to be on Friday nights. We will be trying something new this week. There's a 50's & 60's band playing at the Red Caboose Park in Bellevue. They are a local group playing from 7-9. I'm sure later that night some will go back to Ivories. More on the Red Caboose next month. It was good to see Mary Martin back out again. Remember she had knee replacements in the spring. She even played 7 holes of golf a few weeks back. Spoke with Marsha Canaday this week. She has gone back to work from shoulder surgery. Still having her therapy and will be back in the late fall. That's all the news I know or can tell. ~Ros Beard ABOUT OUR MEMBERS Happy Birthday to these members: Cynthialynn Jones - 08/13 Jim Lazenby - 09/14 Jerry McNall - 08/09 These members are up for renewal: (date shown is last day of membership) Judy Cummings - 08/31/2007 Trish Gregory - 08/31/2007 Eileen Holloran - 08/31/2007 Bill Porter - 08/31/2007 J.
