1 CELEBRATING 11 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Nashville Chapter - American Singles Golf Association April 2004 Let s Golf! Take a look at our schedule and you ll see our Golf Committee has been hard at work planning lots of really great outings. We have lots of choices of days and courses both local and out-oftown. So come on out and join us. One of the best reasons to attend the monthly membership meeting is to find out about coming events and sign up. But if you didn t make it to last month s meeting, please call the contact person or Ginny Dukes and tell them you d like to play. In March, we had four guests at our meeting and two of those have committed to join. Invite your friends and share the fun! Check out NSGA in this month s Golfer s Tee Times paper available at all local golf courses. We have a great article and have already started to get a good response. Another local golf resource I ve just discovered is LastMinuteTeeTimes.com. You can go online and find courses that have tee times available for today and tomorrow usually at a discount. See you on the course! - -Debby Vick President Bring A Guest To Play Golf In April!!! We are starting our golf season out with some of our favorite courses! Also, this is Bring a Guest month. There will be a special prize for the member bringing the most golfing guests, in April, to the individual events!!!!! Please contact the event coordinator listed in the Activities Calendar to sign up for any of our play dates. We have had several days in the 70 s and I m sure everyone was out golfing and shooting their best round of the year, so far! Now is a good time to Sign Up and start recording your individual scores through the GHIN system. You will be able to establish your handicap, which we use in completing the pairings on our weekend events. If you have any questions please contact Ginny at Cynthia advises us to start marking our calendars for the Sundowner events. Every Wednesday, starting on May 5 th, we will play golf at Percy Warner GC. This is a walking 9 hole course and is a nice stroll after a full day of work. Then, we usually find our way to the local watering hole to discuss the play of the evening. The Skinny from Ginny NEXT MEETING - Tuesday, April 20th Call & Invite a Friend to Join Our Chapter Today! The Nashville Chapter of the American Golf Association meets on the THIRD TUESDAY of the month. Our next meeting is scheduled for the Princeton s Grill in the Green Hills Mall. Our office hours are 8am-5pm (M-F). Your membership package will be mailed within 10 days. TM Ins and Outs With Pat The chapter would like to welcome John Clark as our newest member. John attended our January meeting as a member of Tommy James and decided to join our group. We look forward to seeing John on the golf course this Spring. We have had several guests visit our meetings: Robert O'Reilly in January, Millie Hohheiser and Beverly Pierce in February and Grady Murphy, Monty Kincaid, Cathy Waggener, Frank Englert and Beverly Pierce again in March. We hope everyone enjoyed the meetings and fellowship and look forward to seeing you at the April 20th meeting. Pat Collins Social Scene Spring has arrived and we are ready! We have been busy these winter months with dining, dancing, playing bridge and bowling for eight weeks. On February 20th we went out to Hendersonville, Larry Anderson's haunt, for dinner and dancing. The Lighthouse on Drakes Creek served some delicious food and the music was great. Eighteen of us, including the newlyweds, Janet and Bill Vaden, ate and danced the night away. Some of our former members, Ann Drayton, Barbara Braswell and Carol Wilkerson, were seen on the dance floor. We had some hot competition on the bowling lanes with nineteen of our members participating during the eight week event. We always went out to eat after bowling and enjoyed meals at Ellendales and Plantation House in Donelson. We are looking forward to golfing in April and are making plans for the Derby Party at Mary Martin's after golf at McCabe on May 1. Mark your calendar and make plans to attend. - -Libby Vaughn Inside The ASGA This month s spotlight is on Tommy James. Tommy is the epitome of a good ASGA member. He is involved in all aspects of membership, is hard-working, and embraces work and play with enthusiasm and cheerfulness. I was born in Odessa, Texas in I moved to Nashville when I was 10 years old and grew up in the Belmont and 16 th Ave South area. I attended West End

3 scheduled over the next couple months include: May 7-9, Palm Springs, Calif. - An ASGA event costing $329 with details on the ASGA website. May 28-30, Santee, S.C. - An annual event hosted by Darlene Lancaster from the Upper South Carolina chapter. This is a fun event somewhat similiar to our Kodak outing. This year it has been added as one of the ASGA Multi-Chapter events and at an economical base cost of $ will fill up quickly. June Kodak, TN - Our annual Tennessee- Carolina Challenge is the last weekend of June (weekend after Father's Day). I am now taking reservations with cost information to be available next month. We normally have NSGA members joining in for this fun event. July Amelia Island Plantation Resort near Jacksonville, Fl. This event replaces the World Golf Village of the past coupole years. Base cost is $219. This event will also be added to the ASGA national list of Multi-Chapter events and should be a popular outing. A reservation can be held for you if you Ellen Butler at ellenb@mtstravel.com and you can make arrangements to pay closer to the time of the event. Contact Bob Blaylock for additional information on any of the above events. Additional information is also available on the ASGA website for ASGA National Multi-Chapter Events. I think that you will find many of the events filling up with the new ASGA policy of supporting selected events as National Multi-Chapter Events. I would suggest not waiting until the last minute if you see an event in which you have a great interest. Fitness: Hip Stretch The midlevel of your body, where your hips are located, must be in good working order for you to reach your golfing potential. The following is an exercise that will help your flexibility, strength and stability in this important area, but as always, consult your physician before starting a new exercise program. Lie on your back and cross your right ankle over your left knee. Then interlock your hands behind the thigh of your left knee. Now, with your head resting on the floor, pull your left knee up toward your chest until you can feel a stretch in your right hip. Do this in a controlled manner. Your goal is to do this five times in each direction, holding each stretch for 20 to 25 seconds. If you're like most golfers, when you first start you'll be limited in these areas, so start slowly and be gentle. Three times in each direction and holding for 10 seconds or less may be sufficient in the beginning. Pace Of Play In order to attract new members and to continue to enjoy a friendly reception and good rates at local golf courses, it is essential that we maintain a respectable pace of play. This means.. Always keep up with the group in front of you. Be willing to pick up your ball if you can t expect to hole out in 3 over par or 8, whichever is less. Be ready over your ball when it s your turn to hit. Take more than one club with you if you re not sure which one you ll need. And always keep an extra ball in your pocket for lost or "wet" balls. You ll be surprised how much faster you ll finish without ever feeling rushed and how much friendlier your fellow golfers will be! If you think it s hard to meet new people, try picking up the wrong golf ball. -Jack Lemmon, actor

4 High School majoring in girls, rock and roll, baseball, and as little academics as I could get away with. After graduating high school I went to work at Ford Glass Plant, During this time I continued my education at Peabody College majoring in music and the University of Tennessee, Nashville majoring in business. In 1968 I joined Capitol Records as a salesman in the Records and Tape Division. Over a 32 year period I worked in the music and electronics business as a sales manager for Ampex, Sony, RCA and started my own company in the compact disc duplication business. In 2000 I sold my interest in this company and retired from full time employment. I now work part time as a consultant in the compact disc business and at Harpeth Hills Golf Course. During that time I managed to stay married for 22 years. Even though the union didn t last we were blessed with two wonderful children, Stephen and Neely. I also have a granddaughter, Emma Claire and a grandson, Elijah Thomas who add much joy to my life. One of the highlights in my life was coaching girls fast pitch softball for 25 years and winning 2 National Championships. This program helped many of the girls go to college on athletic scholarships. I also managed the Brentwood Civitan baseball and softball programs and served as Secretary, Vice President and President of Brentwood Civitan Club. I am a member of the Audio Engineering Society and Brentwood United Methodist Church. My other interests include singing, dancing, playing my guitar, designing and building guitars, making golf clubs, and playing golf. I joined ASGA in December of 1996 and have served as Golf Chariman, Vice President, President, and am currently Board Chariman. I have enjoyed this organization so much. It has given me an opportunity to meet some of the most interesting and wonderful people whom I have come to know and love. I like to play golf and party with my golfing buddies at ASGA. I would like to thank all of you for the support you have given me in my time of need and your friendship. God Bless!!! Tommy James CUDOS! Ken Springer and Gary Carson were among a delegation from Nashville based Caterpillar Financial Services who flew to Washington to receive the prestigious Malcolm Baldridge Award. President Bush presented the award on Tuesday, March 9 at a luncheon at the Crystal Gateway Marriott. Caterpillar Financial was one of seven U.S. corporations to receive the nation s highest honor for quality and performance excellence in leadership, strategic planning, customer and market focus, information and analysis, human resources development and management, process management, and business results. Congratulations to Caterpillar, a world class corporation and to Ken and Gary, world class individuals! We would like to recognize any achievements of our members in the newsletter each month. Everyone was excited about the first formal golf outing for NSGA this year with the weather forecast to be in the high 70's. 's play was at the Highland's Course at the Robert Trent Jones Hampton Cove Course with Sunday's play at the Becky Pierce Municipal Course. Check next month's newsletter for a listing of the winning scores. Fifty one members have signed up for the Battle at Tim's Ford outing against Atlanta the weekend of April 16th and 17th. Please contact Bob Blaylock to be placed on the back-up list for the event. Both Atlanta and Nashville have filled their allotted 24 spots. But, there are always last minute cancellations.
