1 CELEBRATING 17 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Shenandoah Valley Chapter - American Singles Golf Association November 2009 From the President First of all, I want to welcome all of the new and potentially new members to the latest edition of ASGA. Our new chapter, Shenandoah Valley, has an opportunity to share the great game of golf with one of the fastest growing areas in the country. The number of people moving into the area between Route 29, Route 7, and Our President Welcomes You Interstate 81 gives us the opportunity to be one of the largest chapters in ASGA. There will be many new friends to be made and venues to tryout. I am hoping to see everyone s golf game improve and become more enjoyable through our chapter. Our chapter offers not only golf, but social activities and community involvement as well. Just in this area alone we have over twenty-five public courses and more than double that number in the surrounding area. With the help of our membership, I hope to take this chapter to play most of these golf courses in the 2010 season. Our national office also puts on numerous events as well as chapters across the US with multi-chapter events. As a member of ASGA Shenandoah Valley, you are welcomed to participate in any or all of these events. In 2010, upcoming events are a New Years Golf outing in Florida to kick the year off, Winter Chill presented by the Wilmington chapter in late February and the BIG event for 2010 is the National Trip to Scotland. I started with ASGA back in I saw the yellow flyer at a golf course at which I was playing and decided to take the plunge. It s been a fun and enjoyable trip ever since. I was the golf chairman for the Washington, D.C. chapter, and then relocated down to the Atlanta area and joined up with the Peachtree city chapter. Then moving to Reno, I was making plans to start a new chapter there when work brought me back to northern Virginia. Office hours are 8-4, ET. man there. Living in Gainesville, I was caught in the middle of the DC and Fredericksburg, chapters making it a tough commute to enjoy the social activities. So this is how I came to the conclusion of starting a chapter in this neck of the state. From Winchester to Fairfax, there are plenty of social activities to go along with our golf. I am hoping to start having a few social functions as early as December 4, which just happens to be our first chapter meeting. Now, before all the fun can really get hopping, I need volunteers for all of our board positions. You will not be alone and will receive plenty of help and tools to make this chapter the best it can be. A few hours a week is all it takes. Most of the work is done; it just takes a phone call here and there and some computer work following up on s or depositing checks in the bank. If you are interested, please let me know. All of the positions have job descriptions on the National Website. So, again I welcome you to the Newest Chapter of ASGA, SHENANDOAH VALLEY. ~Paul Gorodnick From the Social Chair There is no limit to what we can do for social activities. Happy Hours, 9 Holes and Dine, Putt-Putt, Bowling, Winery Tours, Trips to Charlestown, White Water Rafting, Concerts, Wizard, Nationals, Capitals, even NFL Games. The activities are endless. If you dare, you can even host a social at your residence. Submit your ideas to the Social Chair and we will put them into action. Of course you may be asked to help. Helping out in any of our chapter events is appreciated and encouraged. For now, we need someone to volunteer for this position. From here Communications Chair will be handling the newsletter and providing other information on events and activities that correspond to our chapter. If anyone has an article or funny golf story they would like to post, please submit it to me. Also, you may notify me of any golf services, sales items or looking to carpool to an event. We will post our Calendar of Events on our soon-tobe-designed website and Yahoo groups page. Each golf outing or other chapter event will have a recap. We encourage you to submit pictures you have taken, although not all photos can be used due to limit space in our newsletter. However, we can post all the pictures we want on our website and Yahoo groups page. For now, we need someone to volunteer for this position. Details on this position are outlined From the Golf Chair This has to be the best job in the chapter. With everyone s suggestions, the Golf Chair will be setting up and choosing the golf courses that the group plays. Anyone suggesting a course is highly recommended. Together we will set up the tee times and the prizes to be won. Most of our golf outings will have Closest to the Pin on all the par 3 s and Longest Putt made on a particular hole. Other options will be to have Longest Drive, Farthest from the Pin, Hole-N-One, team Scrambles and Shambles. Not every round will be play-your-own-ball. We are a mixture of levels of golf play. During the summer months we are planning to do 4-8 clinics on all variations of the game. These usually happen an hour before the golf outing. We are looking to play an average of 3-5 times a month, with at least one Do you want to update your personal information on our chapter s roster? You can now do this yourself. 3 round designated as a Scramble or Shamble. Our 9 and Dine events usually happen on a weekday where only 9 holes is played, then out to dinner. One location planned for this is Broad Run on Route 28 between Manassas and Bristow. The 1757 Golf Club on Waxpool Rd. near Ashburn, is another excellent facility for practicing our game. On top of the local events, we will also plan 1-2 weekend getaways separate from the National Events. All ideas are welcomed for these weekend getaways. Golf is for everyone at all levels of play. With our clinics and Scrambles, I hope to see dramatic improvements from everyone throughout the year. Keep in mind that you must be having fun at the same time. Even if you feel the urge to yell out or toss a club, just keep smilin. Every effort will be made to pair up all foursomes with 2 men and 2 women. If you would like to play with a certain member, just be sure that member wants to play with you. We will also have a handicap system in place for the group. If you have a handicap at another club that is fine also. Having a handicap will help with events that using a handicap for flights and prizes. More to come on handicaps later. National Golf Outings with other chapters across the USA to locations like, Pinrhurst, Ireland, Florida and Myrtle Beach, just to name a few great golfing destinations. Rules and More Rules Larry was having a particularly bad start on hole number 7 last weekend. After a beautiful practice swing he stepped up to the ball on the tee and made a stroke at the ball and caught nothing but air. While this is a good term if shooting hoops, it is a whiff when playing golf. Somewhat embarrassed, he again addressed the ball but accidentally knocked it off the tee. He lifted it back on the tee and said, well I guess this means I am now hitting lying one (1), hitting two (2). Was Larry correct? What is the correct answer and why? A. Yes Larry is correct, Lying One (1) hitting two (2) is correct. Take a penalty for whiffing your tee shot, but replace your ball without penalty for accidentally knocking it off the tee. B. No, Larry is not correct, he still hitting one (1). No contact was made on the whiff stoke, so no stroke is counted. Likewise, a ball falling off a tee does not incur a stroke. Larry may have looked awkward, but he was still lying zero (0) and was facing his first stroke. C. No, Larry is not correct, he is lying two (2) hitting three (3). Count one stroke for his whiff and one penalty stroke for moving his ball while it was in play and replace it. D. No, Larry is not correct, he is lying two (2) hitting three (3). Count one stroke for his whiff and one penalty stroke for moving his ball and play it as it lies. And the Answer is: The correct answer: C. When Larry made a stroke at the ball, it was a stroke and counted as a stroke, even though he whiffed the ball. At that point the ball is deemed to be in play. Rule 11-3 regarding a ball falling off the tee no longer applies. When the ball moves after it is addressed, you incur a penalty stroke and must replace the ball as per (Rule 18-2b). Larry is lying two (2) hitting three (3). Count one stroke for his whiff and one penalty stroke for moving his ball while it was in play and replace it.

Our annual trips for warm climates in the winter have landed us back in Orlando once again. It s really tough to beat what this city offers to golfers. Yes, we could have chosen a venue less expensive, but a vacation should feel like a vacation. This hotel will make you feel like you have arrived. It is four-star from the rooms to the pools to the on-site golf courses, quality of food, etc. Check out the hotel s website OmniOrlandoResort.com and you ll see what we mean. New Year s Day falls on a Friday this year and our event begins on Tuesday. The beauty of this is that you can arrive as many as three (3) days early and stay up to three (3) days late and it will only cost you $64 per person (based on dlb. occ.) to stay an additional night, or $128 to room by yourself. Orlando offers so much more and our online website can give you links to other things to do while there, such as visiting Mickey, SeaWorld, MGM, etc. Look for the official registration form in this newsletter, or go to the website (SinglesGolf.com/newyears) for complete details and online registration. In October, chapters should have elected their chapter president for the 2010 calendar year beginning January 1. At the November meetings, chapters are suppose to elect their committee heads. All of this is according to your chapter bylaws ( If you have not elected your leaders for next year, please make sure you do it by the end of November.
