VETRUNNER ISSN 1449-8006 Vol. 33 Issue 9 April 2012 Patron: Jack Pennington OAM Email: vetrunner@actvac.com (By Michelle Wells) North Curtin and all that jazz 26 February 2012 Q: What do an IT worker, an orchard grower and a volunteer patient for university medical students have in common? A: They were all gold medallists in the run/walk handicap on 26 February at North Curtin of course! Grey skies, humidity, a hilly start, and the threat of rain did nothing to stop 107 competitors finish the long (6.2km) course as part of the Thomas Series. And the prospect of winning a gold medal on the course was far from IT worker, Peter McDonald's mind. I was just hoping that my knee would have enough cartilage in it to get to the top of the hill at the 2km mark, he joked. North Curtin can indeed be a tricky course to run well because a hilly start and a long downhill before you hit the flat means you need to ensure enough petrol in the tank to get you home. Perhaps Peter's regular running with the likes of Bruce Graham helped his performance? (Peter modestly says his training has been a little sporadic and his running generally is a few peaks with a lot of troughs in between ). Or maybe it was an extra caffeine hit that morning? Or - he was spurred on by the knowledge that his partner, Maria O'Reilly, won the silver medal on the same course a year earlier? We may never know. One thing we do know is that this is Peter's second gold medal, and he's also picked up a bronze on the hilly Campbell Park course in 2006. As a group 17 starter, he must have a pretty decent engine in him. Something that he discovered around 20 years ago when he quit smoking and ran the Canberra Times, City to Surf and the Vets Half Marathon. It was really the best thing I could've done, and part of my give-up therapy, he said. Peter enjoys cycling, reading, and travelling something he and partner Maria spent a lot of time doing three months of last year when they ventured to the US and Europe. Anne Young an inspiration to many female Vets was second over the line in the Thomas series to win silver (in 43:59 net time). Anne is well-known for her staying power in every sense of the word. You only have to look at her outstanding runs in the Vets Half Marathons over more than 20 years. Anne won in her W75 age group at the 2011 Vets Half Marathon which makes it 23 wins in her age group from 23 starts! John Anderson managed to edge out Joan Mallory by 8 seconds to claim the bronze medal in 30:20. John is currently top of the pointscore for the Thomas Series. Can he stay ahead in 2012? Anthony Kennedy was the fastest man on the Thomas Course clocking 23:52. He also holds the course records at North Curtin for M35 and M40 (22:48 and 23:29 respectively). Fastest woman over the line was yours truly, Michelle Wells, in 26:25 but I had Buckley's chance of catching David the whippet Webster he cruised past me to get over the line in 14 th place. David was pumped with his time of 26:42 he's currently training for this fifth marathon coming up on 15 April as part of the Australian Running Festival in Canberra - and is in the thick of hard training for the event, clocking up between 85-100 km per week and feeling good. Two well-known track competitors dominated the 3km (Frylink Series) course at North Curtin. Tony Booth is renowned for his express finishes to races (and this handicap was no different starting off in group 19 and charging first over the line in 14:49). Tony started running when he was 44 and did a lot of PBs in his 50's. An active track competitor, he continued to smash records in his M70 age group (he took 17 seconds off the 1 mile record back in 2008) and is running strongly in 3000 metre events. He has regularly trained for many years with Geoff Moore's Speedygeese. He and wife Chris are also well known around the region, for their orchard out at Pialligo. Silver medallist Consie Larmour is no stranger to short course competition. She's been running with Vets since 2003 preferring the shorter Frylink courses which seem to complement her success on the track in the sprint events. As well as participating in the AMA Championships and Masters Games over the years, Consie competes at an international level and just seems to go from strength to strength. After turning 70 back in 2005 she broke several ACT and Australian Records on the track. More recently, she competed in February's Oceania Masters Athletics in Tauranga, Waikato/Bay of Plenty, New Zealand winning silver in the W75 100m (20.20), and picking up two bronze medals in the W75 60m final (12,79) and 200m final (44.91). Bill Egan crossed the line in eighth place to claim Frylink's bronze medal in a net time of 17:09. After being brought forward a group from the previous month, Bill Continued on Page 8 The Find Thirty every day campaign is an initiative of the Heart Foundation proudly funded by the Department of Health, Western Australia.

It s amazing how quick time seems to fly nowadays. By the time most of you will be reading this President s Message we will be only a year away from hosting the 2013 AMA National Track and Field Championships from Friday 29 th March to Monday 1 st April. When I first put my hand up to be President last May the event was on the far horizon and I only tinkered on the edges of aspects such as venues and understanding the AMA requirements. Now as we hit 12 months from the Championships and I understand the quantum of work that will required over the next six months, I am starting to appreciate the complexity of event management and the importance of getting a functioning team on board quickly to deal with the magnitude of matters that we are confronting. You will have seen through the last few Vetrunner magazines and heard announcements at our various events that we are seeking people to volunteer to assist us in organising this important event. We now have Michael Thomson well and truly on board as the Convenor of our Local Organising Committee (LOC). Michael spent over an hour at the last Committee meeting and his attendance and participation was most welcome. Michael outlined his plans for the governance of the LOC and the various sub-committees that he would like to establish to oversight the management and conduct of the event. I am comforted by the number of people who have said they are willing to help out in some way. I think I said in last month s President Message that we are now at crunch time. Well I really mean it we need the chiefs to staff the LOC and the key sub-committees because all the well intentioned Indians won t do us any good unless we get the key work done over the next few months. If you can help please talk to anyone on the Committee or to Michael our contact details are elsewhere in the Vetrunner. March will mark the end of our track and field season. We have fallen prey to the weather over recent weeks with one Thursday meet cancelled and another washed out part way through. Despite this it has been an amazing season to be part of. There have been ACT and Australian records aplenty and it has been an effort for our Secretary and myself to keep up with the signing of record certificates. The ACTVAC championships are being held in conjunction with Athletics ACT on 24 th 26 th March 2012 so if you can get out and help with officiating or supporting your fellow ACTVAC members. The 5000m championship is being held on the last Thursday meet on 29 th March so if you haven t found time to get to a Patron: Jack Pennington OAM President: Jeff Grey Email: president@actvac.com Vice President: Rachelle Ellis-Brownlee: 0410 617 532 (m) Secretary: Graham Burke 6241 1699 (h) Email: secretary@actvac.com Treasurer: Nick Blackaby 6258 8902 (h) treasurer@actvac.com Main Committee: committee@actvac.com Janice Banens 0414 411 024 Fran Harris 6230 2341 Paul Archer Ph 6281 3872 (h) Kathy Sims Ph 0418 408 805 Craig Wisdom 6288 9499(h) 6260 8244 (w) Email: info@kingstonphysio.com.au Run / Walk Handicap Sub-Committee Public Officer: Graham Burke Registrar: Treasurer 6258 8902 (h) Sub-Committee Contacts: Annual Awards: track meet yet that might be a good opportunity to come and see how much fun it is! We have a big contingent of over 40 athletes off to Melbourne for the 2012 Championships from 6 th 9 th April and I am sure they will do us proud. I will be making up the numbers is a few M45 events and have the honour of presenting on our progress for the 2013 championships to the AMA Board meeting on 5 th April... lucky me. We ve mentioned the need for volunteers for the Australian Running Festival on 14 th 15 th April 2012. Last year we managed one of the drink stations and the over 5 hour course. This year there are changes for slower participants which won t require us to look after that aspect but our volunteers will play another key role. We received a welcome financial contribution from undertaking this to help YMCA Canberra Runner s Club last year and this helps keep our fees low so if you can help out this year please let Graham Burke know. It s also an opportunity to support the many runners we will have competing as it also doubles as the ACTVAC marathon championship. The Track & Field award night will be held late in April and I encourage you to get along to this or the other ACTVAC social functions and events if you can. We are a strong club and have a great community so be part of it. Remember to Find Thirty Everyday it s not hard and the benefits are plenty. We have been able to keep our fees low and encourage participation thanks to the ACT Government Health Directorate Health Promotion Grant we received. Our membership has increased to over 540 but we hope we can do even more to promote healthy lifestyle messages to our membership and the broader ACT community next year if we can get another grant. (contributed by its members) There is a group, including some of the more senior women of the Club among others, quietly enjoying their athletics and developing and broadening their skills with little fanfare. It includes people of all abilities and some with handicaps other than age, all supporting one another. The group is centred around, you could say driven by, Fran Harris. Its "training" includes not only athletics, but for some also swimming, tennis and gym work, and even the athletics training has more stretches and routines than actual running - exercises punctuated with jokes and finished with coffee and averaging a lot more than 30 minutes a day. While Monday morning at the AIS is the athletics focus, on Tuesday and Friday a few do gym work; Wednesday is the throwing session at Masson St., and others of the group also play competition tennis. Cross-training with never a cross word, except maybe a few gripes about a devilish new stretching exercise Fran has devised. Fran s Group April 2012 Vetrunner Page 5 the clouds. One male member has worried about being sprung doing exercises on the floor of the AIS female change room! Quite a few of the group ventured to Tauranga and explored some of the amazing scenery of the north island of New Zealand, and quite a few were weighed down with extra baggage. Regular members (including Fran, Cory, Consie, Gwen, Jan, Jo, Jen & John) brought back between them 14 gold, 15 silver and 15 bronze medals, and if one includes occasional members/spouses (Bob & Gary) a total of 19 gold, 16 silver and 16 bronze medals. They also set seven new ACT records, four Championship records and two Australian records. (awaiting official confirmation) Fran is keen to see members develop and extend themselves and to try new things, and perhaps in the future more will be seen doing pentathlons and hurdles, and undoubtedly a lot more will be using starting blocks in the sprints, but more than that you will surely observe a lot of happy, healthy bodies showing amazing flexibility for their age, quietly setting their own personal goals and encouraging each other. We urgently need the help of many members to fill a number of key roles required to organise the Championships. You don't have to know or compete in Track & Field to be fill some of these roles, in fact it may be an advantage to be new at the role and being available during the Championships. The Convener of our Local Organising Committee (CLOC) has full responsibility for the Championships. The Convener will also establish the Local Organising Committee (LOC) whose members will be responsible for organising and chairing a sub-committee that will take responsibility for a particular area(s) of the overall organisation of the championships and report regularly to the CLOC. The CLOC is the link between all sub-committees concerned with the planning, preparation, implementation and conduct of the Championships. The CLOC has regular meetings with sub-committee managers and reports progress to the Executive Committee. In the final three months, the CLOC is in regular contact with the AMA Director of Competition. The sub-committee managers organise the various components of the Championships, reporting directly to the CLOC. ** Will you help ACTVAC conduct a successful AMA National Championship in 2013? ** WE NEED YOU!! Page 8 April 2012 Vetrunner Continued from Page 1 said he thought he'd at least have a crack at a medal this month. He says he started running before he turned 40 to stop himself becoming a couch potato and just to prove that he wasn't, went on to run at least 18 marathons, including two first place wins with the Vets. Perhaps a little known fact about Bill is he's an author of jazz books and has written one about the 1920s American jazz queen Florence Mills. He's also just published a chess book which should be released in March. Overall, there were 44 runners competing in Frylink, and the fastest man on the course was the unstoppable Bruce Graham in 10:30; and fastest woman Katie Forestier - in 12:02. Both have been training hard for the upcoming AMA National Track and Field Championships to be held in Melbourne in early April. And it was the women who dominated the Waddell event this month cleaning up the total medal prize pool. Former netballer, squash player, and swimmer, Josie Kulesz, celebrated her 50 th run/'walk handicap with the Vets in style crossing the line in first place in the 3km Waddell to take the gold medal in a net time of 28:16. Josie is very familiar with the North Curtin course (a good, straight-forward walk ) - this is the second gold medal she's won in the Vets handicap at North Curtin (the previous one in the Frylink series three years ago), and her third gold medal overall. Josie's smiling face is well known around the running traps as an active participant and volunteer of the YMCA of Canberra Runners Club events particularly at the Women and Girls' Jogalong held on the first Sunday of every month. A retired HR manager, Josie now also keeps herself busy by being a volunteer patient for ANU medical students! Popular Vets all-rounder, Nola de Chazal, picked up the silver medal in the Waddell in a net time of 29:27. Nola has been running vets handicaps for many years and has had a go at everything walking, running and throwing. She's ranked in the top three medallists for the Vet run/walk handicaps with an impressive 18 medals four gold, five silver and nine bronze. Bronze medallist for the Waddell in 22:06 was Margaret Taylor. A multiple handicap medallist, Margaret is another long-time Vet member of 26 years. She prefers the short course handicaps with most of her events in the Frylink series over the years. A former squash and tennis player, Margaret is another prolific track competitor including the throwing handicaps and pentathlon. There were 40 competitors in the February Waddell overall, with Robin Whyte clocking 19:20 as the fastest man in the event and Monika Short at 20:13 the fastest woman. Overall, North Curtin course provides a good challenge for many of us who enjoy running in Canberra's beautiful nature parks. But more importantly, it's the good-natured camaraderie that brings us out to the Vets run/walk handicaps each month. Long-time Vet runner Cilla Chapman, best sums this up: I've literally spent half my life with the Vets, starting out running as a 30 year old. I like the companionship, and being able to have the opportunity of competing at whatever you choose and the fact that we cater for all ages and abilities. A special thanks also to Lynn and Kent Williams for coordinating and the tireless team of volunteers on the day, who were not only responsible for another successful and enjoyable event, but kept a watchful eye on a spider lurking near Vets backpacks behind the recorder area in the long grass. That's NOT the kind of trophy you want to bring home! T-Shirts BERYL LOWRY: 150 Having a husband and a son who were both enthusiastic and successful long distance runners inspired Beryl to also have a go. Beryl soon became involved in the local running community being a regular participant with the Vets, Cross Country Club (CCC) and the Womens Jogalong. For several years she was the organizer of the Jogalong and in 1999 was made a life member of the CCC. Her debut running handicap was on the Weston Park course in March 1991. Most of her runs have been on the long course and to date she has won ten medals (five gold, two silver and three bronze medals). At Farrer Ridge in May 2005 Beryl had a double celebration by winning the gold medal for the short course on her one hundredth monthly handicap. On two occasions Beryl and her son Rohan have placed runner-up in the City to Surf mother and child category. Thrilled to see his mother doing so well in veterans athletics Rohan once gave her a pair of spikes as a birthday present, only to see her trip and fall the very first time she wore them. STEVEN BRADFORD: 100 Steve s first handicap was at Mulligans Flat in July 1999. Most have been in the long course and in 2000 he won the annual point score. However, several years ago ill health forced him to cease running and take up walking so he began participating in the Waddell Series in which he immediately enjoyed success; even winning four consecutive monthly medals. To date he has won six medals (three gold, a silver and two bronze medals). Injury prevented him from making his marathon debut with his wife Prue in the 2001 Canberra Marathon but he did manage to join her in the 2002 event. In January 2006 51 year-old Steve suffered what could have been a fatal heart attack but fortunately it occurred in the Canberra Hospital coronary care unit. Following treatment he returned to work in February and for many months limited his participation to walking in the Waddell Series. Steve reported on the symptoms and subsequent treatment of his heart attack and his rehabilitation in the February 2006 edition of Vetrunner. Steve s rehab was so successful that by mid 2007 he was again running well. He won the M50 title in our annual half marathon, his second victory in this event having previously been M45 champion in 2001. He then continued his remarkable recovery to clinch his second long course annual point score as well as being 2007 King of the Mountain for the series. ROD LYNCH: 100 Rod s first handicap was at West Stromlo in June 2000. All but two of his 100 handicap runs have been in the long course and to date he has won two medals a gold and silver. He was crowned 2006 King of the Mountains for his performances on the designated hilly courses. Rod is a regular at track and field where he used to prefer the sprints and middle distance races but in recent seasons he has favoured the longer events. Last December s 21st Higgins Memorial 800m Handicap last was his tenth run in this special annual event. Obviously feeling he was in good shape he made the 2006 ACT Veterans Half Marathon his long distance running debut. He was pleased

April 2012 Vetrunner Page 9 and surprised by placing third in the M45 age group in the good time of 86.09. In 2006 Rod became our ninth club secretary when he was elected at a special general meeting. He was re-elected to the position the following year. JOSEPHINE KULESZ: 50 Whilst at school Josephine participated in a number of sports; such as netball, hockey, swimming and athletics. When she moved to Canberra she got involved in competition netball, squash and ten pin bowling and of course running in the Jogalong. She has been an enthusiastic supporter of the Jogalong for a number of years and served on the LOC for the Women and Girls Fun Run and managed the Jogalong volunteer roster for the last four years. Josephine was encouraged to join the Vets by Geoff Moore after she had completed the 2006 Vets Half Marathon. She has run this half marathon five times. Josephine s debut handicap was on the old Parkway course in October 2006. Most have been in the Frylink Series but because of a chronic hip problem she now participates in the walk handicaps. To date she has won three gold medals. Last year she was the winner of the Mullins Trophy for the Waddell Series. Milestoners: Rod Lynch, Beryl Lowry, Josephine Kulesz and Steven Bradford 31 st ACT VETERANS HALF MARATHON Two years ago I promised myself, and my wife Trish, the 30th ACT Veterans Half Marathon would be my last as race director. I have enjoyed my long involvement in this special event right from the time I suggested to the committee, way back in 1981, that our members would be attracted to a half marathon specifically designed for their age. I am again appealing for someone to take over for 2012 and beyond. The task is easier than it looks I have a complete planning kit that includes a schedule of tasks, documentation of previous events, the records and history all saved on computer file. I also have a list of valuable contacts and of course there is abundant experience amongst our members most of whom only need to be asked to assist. I will volunteer to continue to maintain the records and the history of the event if required and will be available to advise and help on race day. Perhaps I held onto the event for too long but I was proud of what it had become and I enjoyed feeling a fair degree of ownership. But it s now time for someone else to take over. You wouldn t be expected to do it for the next 30 years - perhaps for three or four. The date and venue for this year s half marathon have been booked. If interested please contact me and we can go through all the procedures for next year in preparation for the 31 st ACT Veterans Half Marathon 19 August 2012. In fact, pen in hand, he asked everyone he saw. Jim organises a fascinating and friendly event every February, which I will attempt to describe further down. Although I am usually not much of a km-interval runner these days, and I hate risking injury and letting the team down by pushing too fast in a relay of any kind, particularly a continuous relay, I thought it would fun to be a part of this unique event for another year so I agreed I would run. Training partners told I won t be at Stromlo today. Check! Brightly coloured green racing singlet. Check!. Brightly coloured green racing shoes. Check!. Full change of clothes and towel in case of rain. Check! Alarm set for 5:30am so I can get to Dunrossil Drive by 7:15am. Check! At the race venue who is in my team? Are they sprinters or distance runners? Sprinters would give us a potential challenge: keeping them going at the end; distance runners would mean a potential challenge for ME John Dimitriou 6 2 1 3 Beverley Forbes 6 2 3 1 Ken Gordon 6 2 1 3 Megan Haylock 6 2 2 2 David Holmes 6 5 1 Keith Johnson 6 3 3 Roy Jones 6 5 1 Adrian Krauss 6 1 4 1 Garry Lee 6 3 3 Bill Leyden 6 1 3 2 Sylvia Mackay 6 2 3 1 John McMillan 6 2 4 Brian Paxman 6 4 2 Claire Perry 6 3 3 Bev Scown 6 4 2 Kaye Thorpe 6 3 2 1 Faye Todd 6 2 2 2 Glenda Wood 6 1 5 Carol Baird 5 2 2 1 John Bakker 5 2 2 1 Prue Bradford 5 2 1 2 Colin Bridge 5 1 2 2 Caroline Campbell 5 2 1 2 Maree Coldrick 5 2 1 2 Debbie Cowell 5 2 1 2 Brenda Day 5 3 2 Grahame Delaney 5 2 1 2 Brenda Field 5 1 2 2 Lloyd Field* 5 3 1 1 Christine Freeman 5 2 3 Audun Fristad 5 4 1 Jenny Galvin 5 3 1 1 Neil Gentle 5 3 1 1 Rod Gilchrist 5 2 3 Bill Ginich* 5 3 2 Deb Gordon 5 4 1 Faye Green 5 2 3 Peter Hogan 5 2 3 Margaret Johnson 5 2 3 Ian Lavering 5 2 3 Bernie Millett 5 2 3 Pat Mullins 5 2 3 Jim O'Donnell 5 3 2 Juani M O'Reilly 5 3 2 Rosalie Pilkinton 5 4 1 Bernie Rogers 5 2 2 1 Maureen Rossiter 5 2 3 Edward Towner 5 1 4 Julie Triggs 5 2 3 Gwen Vines 5 1 3 1 Brian Wenn 5 3 2 Ken White 5 2 1 2 *Deceased to keep going at the end. Where along the course do I start? Where am I when I have to chase down the baton? Who from the other teams are in my group, those I will be racing each time and hanging around the change over points with? There were eight teams: there were eight batons of various colours and the teams were named after the batons. There were six runners in each team and two or three others not participating. We could make up to fifty new friends all in one day! Luckily rain never came and it stayed mild and pleasant. Perfect conditions for short sharp intervals with a long standing-around recovery. Drinks at each change-over point were provided. Had it turned out warm and sunny we would have been OK. I got picked number 2 in the team which meant I started at the furthest point of the course; runner 6 who is the team s slowest goes first and runner 1 who is the fastest goes second. Plenty of time to get there. I looked around at the group of number 2 runners. It appeared that I may be the slowest in the group but that did not matter; it would be balanced out by the rest of the team, in theory anyway. Here comes the baton! We are in the lead! John and

April 2012 Vetrunner Page 15 Stuart have run blinders first up. I take over and set off like a Left: Winners are Grinners Below: Enjoying a few drinks après Sprint Marathon Relay scared rabbit. After 500m up a slight hill I am passed by one, two, three runners. After 1km I hand over in fourth place. Then I wait while my five team mates complete six kilometres before I have to run again. And again. And again. After an hour of the relay we are not leading; we are running last. But towards the end of the relay we are fighting two other teams for fourth place. We end up fourth. Great effort, guys! Finally as each of us finishes and hands the baton on, we must keep running to catch the baton again. We all make it and cross the line hand-in-hand. I seem to have forgotten that I didn t want to run too hard, it was an all out effort at the end, for all of us. Then the presentation. Jim has done a wonderful job organising it all; John Suiter and Stuart Reid have done a wonderful job recording results and timing the teams at the end of each lap. Trophies are given to the winning team and attractive wooden spoon trophies to the last team as well. Everyone goes away happy! How it works: relay teams comprise six members. The course is six kilometres around. There are five 1km legs and a 2km leg, although runner 6 starts the relay with the second half of the 2km leg, this runner not doing the first half until the finishing sprint. The total distance is 36km; not a marathon then. Nor is it a sprint of course. At the end as each runner passes on the baton for the last time, they keep going as best they can along the rest of the course Above: Wooden Spooners until they reach the finish line, when all team members must cross together holding hands. There are many Sprint Marathon Relay photos on the club s website. *=adjusted Sprint Marathon Relay 2012 results 1 Silver Richard White, Xavier French, Ed Breduis, John Anderson, Elle Knight, Sherryl Greathead, 2 Pink Damian Rutledge, Emma Adams, Stuart Gadenne, Angel Marina, Deb Gordon, Nick Blackaby, 3 Blue Bryce Anderson, Kym Reid, Mick Horan, Nadine Morrison, Tony Hershaw, Maureen Rossiter, 4 Silver/Black Stuart Grey, Geoff Moore, Kelley Flood, Gary Bowen, Ruth Baussmann, John Alcock, 5 Gold Keith Law, Peter Cullen, Maria O'Reilly, Brett Morrison, Alan Duus, Ray Bramwell, 6 Blue/Black Jeff Grey, Peter Thomson, David Clarke, Jim White, Alison Sims, Maria White, 7 Green Craig Wisdom, Andrew Blyton, Ben Clark, Carol Ey, Theresa Macgregor, Tiffany Reedy, 8 Gold/Black Sam Tickle, Peter Clarke, Kym Chisholm, Graeme Patrick, Cathy Montalto, Margaret McSpadden, Lap 1 Lap 2 Lap 3 Lap 4 Lap 5 Lap 6 Final Time 1 Silver 23:42 24:31 24:39 24:33 25:07 25:03 2:27:35 2 Pink 23:52 24:14 24:50 24:30 24:40 27:00 2:29:06 3 Blue 24:13 24:53 25:18 25:08 25:39 24:49 2:30:00 4 Silver/Black 25:03 25:26 25:14 24:55 25:20 26:07 2:32:05 5 Gold 25:34 26:03 26:29 26:52 26:55 20:49* 2:32:42 6 Blue/Black 24:44 24:59 25:31 25:27 25:57 26:32 2:33:10 7 Green 24:54 24:59 25:08 25:22 26:09 27:01 2:33:33 8 Gold/Black 25:14 25:36 25:58 26:15 26:46 26:28 2:36:17 A Word of Thanks I would like to thank my helpers and runners at the 28th Sprint Marathon Relay. A big thanks to the weather man for the great weather and thanks to the man who mowed the grass on Dunrossil Drive. Thanks to Brett Morrison for being a very much needed reserve runner. Thanks to Judi Anderson for taking the great photos which are on the Vets website. Keith Law was the first to arrive and helped with the entries and Peter Hogan made sure the water containers were OK. The biggest thanks goes to My Three Wise Men, Stuart Reid and John Suiter for lap counting and time keeping having to print out results minutes after the finish and Jack Thackray for the great trophies. This year he made chopping boards out of Victorian Ash for the first team and for the first time made wooden spoons for the last team which will now be known as the Spooners. Well done Jack. A special thanks to Sherryl Greathead helping me pack up. It was another great event with everybody having a great time with many smiling faces as the team pictures show. Hope to see you all again next year. Sprint Marathon Relay Organiser Jim White

THE WAY WE WERE April 30 YEARS AGO (April 1982) Our AGM re-elected Peter Frylink president, Ken Daniels secretary and Terry Munro treasurer. Don Chipp was elected patron and John Macleod vice president. The committee consisted of Christine Best, Maggi Johnson, Stuart Reid, Bryan Thomas, Jack Tonkin and Mary Wahren. Terry Munro and Bryan Thomas were co-editors of Vetrunner. Subscriptions were set at $6. Bryan also took on the role as records officer and published a list of all known ACTVAC track and field records. We had records for 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, 5000, 10,000m, long jump, shot, discus and javelin in most men s age groups from M35 to M55 but very few in the other events. Our women s list was extremely thin. However, Lucille Warth had three W55 Australian Records; 1500m 7.36.8, 5000m 24.56 and 10000m 56.59.2. We only had one team in the ANZAC Relays (4 x 4.3km) but many members competed for local AA clubs. Our team of Alan Burdon, Duane Lowry, Alan Newton and Dan Reddy ran 68 minutes. Arthur Brown, Peter Frylink, Judy Johnson, Brian Paxman and Peter Waddell traveled to Perth to compete in the nationals. Judy set an Australian Record in the W35 3000m Walk with a time of 15:15.5. 20 participated in the tough 9.5km Mt Ainslie course for this month s handicap. Peter Kallio ran brilliantly from scratch to win from Thelma Reddy and Greg O Neill. 20 YEARS AGO (April 1992) 47 Canberrans (31 men and 16 women) participated in the Australian Championships in Hobart. Our team returned with 107 medals (35 gold, 34 silver and 38 bronze) and 16 new ACT Records and two Australian Records. Quentin Anthony was the outstanding performer at the championships with 8 ACT Records and an Australian Record in the M60 300mH (47.63). His other records were achieved in the M60 200m, High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Pole Vault, javelin and pentathlon. John Hunt also set an AR for the M50 HJ (1.74m) and an ACT best for the Triple Jump. Our other record setters were: Margaret Dando W60 10km Walk, Jan Erickson W30 Long Jump and Triple Jump, Joan Mallory W60 10000m, Irene Mitchell W50 hammer and Peter Waddell M60 10km Walk. Our track and field awards for the 1990-91 season were presented at a dinner-dance. The Adler Series frontmarkers division was won by Helena Winson and the backmarkers by Stuart N Reid. Heart Foundation Trophy was won jointly to Michael Gardner and Mary Wahren. John April 2012 Vetrunner Page 17 Hunt was awarded the prestigious Johnson Trophy. The Fristad Awards for athletics excellence were presented to Quentin Anthony and Jan Erickson (gold), John Hunt and Margaret Dando (silver) and Tony Murray and Jen Bourke (bronze). Despite very bad weather 19 participated in the monthly throwing handicap. This month s competition was in shot put and javelin. Mary Wahren was the winner from Al Mallory and Attila Spaits. Jim Tucker won the port. The running handicap was conducted from Forest Drive in Stromlo Forest. The long course (8km) had 113 runners and was won by Doug Fry from John Littler and Lorna Burdon. 28 ran the short course (4km); Jim Tucker was the gold medallist in front of Peter May and Maureen O Shea. 50 runs T shirts were earned by Otmar Dorfer, Linda Jamieson, Margaret Johnson and Peter Skinner. 10 YEARS AGO (April 2002) The 30 th annual AMA Championships were held in Adelaide at the attractive new Santos Stadium. Beautiful weather made these championships memorable for the small contingent of 30 ACT vets (18 women and 12 men) that participated. The baby of our team was thrower Alistair Davey (34) and our most senior representative was sprinter Gwen Gleeson (73). Margaret Taylor was again awarded AMA jumper of the year for an unprecedented third occasion. This month s run/walk handicap was conducted on the Central Six course within Stromlo Forest.125 ran the long course won by Roger Pilkington from Rob Parker and Craig Edwards. Ron Weir was the winner of the Frylink Series in front of Karen Daniels and Brenda Ford. Champion race walker Robin Whyte won the Waddell event from Rick Hatcher and Nola de Chazal. This month s handicap also doubled as for the presentation of the annual Mullins Trophies for finishing in the middle of the field. The trophies were won by Bryan Thomas (long course), Brian MacLaughlin (short course) and John Stenhouse (walk). Terry Levings earned his 150 runs T-shirt while Barry Seedsman his 50. Jayne Hardy s purple patch, that began at the World Championships in Brisbane 8 months earlier, continued when she was second in this month s throwing handicap. Since July 2001 Jayne was one of the stars in the AMA Championships, was the recipient of both our Fristad and Johnson Trophies and was this month s Masters Sportsperson of the Month. 30 participated in the handicap in shot and discus won by Irene Mitchell from Jayne and Tanya Colyer.

Page 18 April 2012 Vetrunner Monthly Throwing Handicap 25 February 2012 Shot and Discus Pauline Armstrong wins the handicap for the first time Handicap competition On a cool day for summer 30 throwers (24 at the October Handicap) faced the handicapper with Bob Banens (M60) exploding the 5kg cannon ball 10.84 out into the sand and Jayne Hardy (W45) getting to 9.42. Ray Green s 9.39 was a 29cm improvement on the previous shot discus handicap. These three champion throwers had the longest discus throws as well. However Pauline s victory was comprehensive with wins in the handicap sections of both implements and a distance win of 2.19m. Wendy O Brien and Jayne Hardy filled the shot put placings with Tim Gulliver s 25.86 (24.48 at the previous handicap) giving him second place in the discus section with Bryan Thomas (18.85), after running for 90 minutes as a warm up, in third. When the combined distances of both throws were added to each person s handicaps the perpetual trophy and gold medal went to Pauline Armstrong for the first time. Pauline has become a regular at the handicaps and on a Thursday night where we have witnessed some great hammer throws. During 2011 Pauline competed in seven throws pentathlons with her total point score improving from 1341 to 1835. Second was Tim (two hip) Gulliver who secured a 7+m shot to gain his silver medal. Rather fittingly Jen Bourke in her 217th and last throwing handicap took the bronze medal. As has been recorded elsewhere in this vetrunner by Veteran Athletic historian, Bryan Thomas, Jen Bourke was a foundation member of the throwers handicap and together with Trish Thomas neither have missed a handicap in 22 years. Jenny has made a remarkable contribution to Veterans athletics and to Canberra throwers in more recent years. Jenny at one point attempted to train your erstwhile reporter! Jan Banens was fourth overall and the top 10 included in order Bryan Thomas, Diann Bramwell, Trish Thomas, Margaret Taylor (fresh from a close 100m win in the Oceanias), Robert Kennelly and John Hunt. Gulliver had much the better of Taylor in the M65 discus but Jen Bourke with her farewell goodies Taylor s aggression (partly motivated by his hard fought bronze medal in the Javelin in the Oceania games) with 5kg cannon ball produced an 8.03 shot, 3cm longer than last time. Diann Bramwell improved two places to 6 th this time with a 12cm improvement in the shot and 15cm in the discus. John Hunt improved eight places with a 45cm improvement in his shot. With the aid of a 28cm improvement in discus Tanya Colyer went forward six placings from last time. Raylea Rudov was a sight for sore eyes joining us at Masson street after an enforced layoff, she was seen to some advantage in the discus enclosure. Two regulars from throwing absent on the Saturday handicap have just reached important throwing milestones; Robin Whyte has turned 70 and qualifies for the 4kg cannon ball and Joan Mallory has turned 80 and will be invited to pick up the 2k shot. There were beautiful cakes and biscuits again from the Nola Bakery. Frank Nugent took the Oscar for a spectacular discus throw which involved involuntary movements of every area of Frank s body and it was pure good luck that he was left standing upright after 4 seconds of pure spectator enjoyment. This month s lucky draw for the fine bottle of wine, again kindly donated by Bjarne Kragh of Southside Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Centre in Tuggeranong, was won by Margaret Taylor and we hope that Graham will also get to enjoy a glass. We thank the officials very much for all their work and arriving early to set up; Wendy O Brien, Nola de Chazal, Peter Neill, Attila Spaits and the regular hardworking organisers; Trish, Jane, Frank and Raylea. The Standard weights attracted 9 persevering participants with an almost equal gender balance. Jayne took the women s competition with 12.17 (8cm better than she did at the October rendition), with Jan Banens heaving 11.39, success story Pauline with 10.27 and Trish Thomas on 6.30. In the men s edition Kevin Blewitt with bad knees and all, sent the screaming giant steel ball 12.98m, Bob Banens with 11.83 had the best of the 9kg division with Peter Freeman (fresh back from 5 years in the UK) depositing the object 8.71 out into the sand. The young men Frank Nugent and Geoff Crumpton (recovering from a bad illness) sent the largest of the huge missiles 7.65 and 7.54 respectively into the ether. Sixteen of the throwers group intrepidly made their way to the shaky isles earlier in the year: Jan and Robert Banens, Jane Hardy, Fran Harris, Rad Leovic, Joan Mallory, Col Robbie, Margaret and Grahame Taylor, Jean and Kerrie Thew and John Lamb made their way to the Oceania Games in Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty where a good time was had by all. Good weather, fun filled informally competitive days. Amongst the success stories were Jane s six golds and a championship record in hammer and weight, Bob s and Fran s five golds and Jan s five medal haul. A small breakaway group of Trish and Bryan Thomas and Robin Whyte and Val Chesterton risked all by passing through/or above Canterbury and competing at the NZ Masters in Dunedin. The 2011 point score competition The top ten in the 2011 Connell Series were Narelle Blackaby, Nola de Chazal, Wendy O Brien, Bryan Thomas, (up from 4 th ) Tanya Colyer, Diann Bramwell, Mary Wahren, Joan Mallory, Frank Nugent and Margaret Taylor. Your humble reporter clung to his hard won 24 th position. Calendar of events and helpers Next month s handicap will be in Hammer and Javelin at 1.00pm at Masson Street Throwing Field Saturday afternoon 17 March and then the following one, shot and discus on 28 April. The designated helpers for April are Mary Wahren, Kerry and Jean Thew. Helpers are reminded they should be at Masson Street at noon to help set up the venue and take entries. Then assist to conduct the events and pack up at the end of the presentations. If you are unable to assist on the designated event please try to arrange a swap with another member but you must inform Trish of any change (H 61613635 or 0413 003 636). (With support from Jan Banens I remain your humble throws 2 nd year apprentice reporter Robert Kennelly. I am simply amazed that the powers that be have signed me to yet another lucrative journalistic contract for 2012!)

Page 22 April 2012 Vetrunner Never the twain shall meet By Jack Pennington At the New Year I compared the 1948 Olympics with 2012 showing why the performances will be vastly improved. In a similar vein I follow with the 1982 predictions of Dr Ken Dwyer a sports scientist of Queensland University titled Challenging Men - The Social Biology of Women in Sport. [There were other authors in UK/who had similar predictions] This author traced women's performances in athletics from its beginnings early in the 20 th century until 1980. The predictions were that women would equal men's by the year 2000, especially at our Olympics in Sydney. One of the biggest flaws in this prediction was that he had included the East German results all of which have now been deleted because of medical intervention of drugs, especially steroids. Only one East German world record of those days exists and that is the 400m set by Marita Koch at the Bruce Stadium Canberra in 1985 with a time of 47.6seconds. In that race she was totally unchallenged and of course she ran for East Germany. There were others from USA and UK whose Olympic performance has been deleted sometimes many years later for using drugs. For instance Marion Jones of the USA was not defeated for fifteen years and eventually served a prison term for lying before a judicial inquiry of the FBI. All her Olympic and World records were reallocated. It is clear our own Raelene Boyle should have been an Olympic sprint champion because she was beaten by an East German in the 1972 Olympics. It has been well established that women will never better the men's world records because the biological and physical differences between men and women have been scientifically assessed as eight per cent. For instance a lower maximum oxygen uptake and a lower performance in tests of strength, speed equals strength and muscular co-ordination but most importantly men produce testosterone measured at 5000-7000 units compared with only 285-440 units produced by women. This indicates how important testosterone is. There are many other differences and women have an overwhelming advantage by 99% in continuing the human race. At the 1900 Olympics there were only twelve women. In 1972 there were still only 1,299. The first time there was an Olympic 400m for women was at Tokyo 1964 won by our own Betty Cuthbert in 52 seconds on a cinder track. The first women's international in athletics was in 1921 at Monte Carlo which included Great Britain, France, Switzerland, Italy and Norway. The track events were 60m, 250m and 800m. There were also also hurdles and relays. The 800m caused the women so much physical distress that the IAAF banned the race for women and it was not again introduced until the Rome Olympics of 1960. Oddly there was still no 400m at that Olympics. In 1963 Merry Leppens ran in the Calver City marathon USA. There is no official record because women were not allowed to enter marathons. Austria was the first country to conduct a National Championship for women in 1918 and in 1919 the British Services for the first time conducted a track event for women, a 4x100 relay. In 1931 the NSW championships included a 90 yard hurdles and the entrants had to produce a chit from the police to allow them to wear shorts. Women featured for the first time in the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles with 100m and 200m, high jump, long jump, discus and javelin. Incidentally the 100m was won by a Polish "woman" who died a man. Again the Americans in the 1984 Olympics introduced more events for women with the 400m hurdles, the 3000m and the marathon. The women's records of 2012 are now equal to the men's of 1960 set on cinders. I can diverge here and ask why in the Australian Open Tennis Championships the men's final took over five hours and they were both completely exhausted while the women's final took only one hour and twenty minutes? I query this because I understood that women had more endurance than men They also now collect the same prize money and the men's winner got more than two million buck. The best women's marathon is two hours fifteen minutes and the men's is two hours three minutes. This is a fair comparison as although courses vary at least the surface is the same. Predictions were also submitted for women in the year 2000 by Bryan Lloyd 1980 and Ken Dyer 1982. Here they are: 100m 10.0, 200m 20.8, 400m 44.0, 800m lm43s 1500m 3m22.2, 5,000m 12m43, 10,000m 26m67s, marathon 2hr05m. Those times are just about equal to the current men's times and from memory the women's current times are: 100m 10.9s, 200m 22.3s, 400m 47.6[suspect?] 800m lm53s, 1500m 3m55s, 5000m 14m20s, 10,000m 30m30s. From memory the current men's are: 100m 9.8s, 200m 19.3s, 400m 43.1s, 800m lm40s, 1500m 3m24s, 5000m 12m26s, 10,000m 26m36s. I use my memory because I am not like my readers. In over sixty years on writing about running I have not been on the Internet and I do not intend doing so as it can be addictive especially, from hearsay, there is a lot of dangerous rubbish and misinformation on it. I have about sixty books on the subject I have written about. Finally I recommend the reading on the biological differences between men and women by Anne and Bill Moir, titled "IRON The science of gender studies published by Harper and Collins in 1998. It will blow your mind.

All runners, even marathoners, would benefit from some strength work beyond that which many of us do regularly. But what kind of strength work? New forms of training which are becoming popular around Canberra are good starting points for thinking about innovative kinds of training sessions. Have you noticed all the sporty training groups springing up around Canberra? You see them in small and large numbers wherever there are grassy parks and ovals. Cones form a temporary track; sweat and tears the order of the day. Even on the slopes of Regatta Point we recently came across a group of about 30 doing synchronised sit-ups all in a row, under the supervision of someone who looked and sounded suspiciously like a drill sergeant. Most of the participants look pretty fit to start with. Where do all these fit people come from? It is great to see so many people, especially young people, develop the fitness habit before it is too late. Fresh air, active continuous exercise, all good. At Parliament House, usually I find it easy to alter our Monday night training session a little and try something new, but on two occasions recently (or three, possibly, by the time you read this) we have had a very different kind of session from our normal routine. Hoping the threatening rain would not arrive, and hoping I could remember what the plan was, we went over to the small soccer oval on the west side of Parliament House where I set up a circuit with cones and exercise stations, looking very like the set-up these other training groups employ. The idea of the session we have done was borrowed from a couple of personal trainers, ex-army, who run bootcamps all over Canberra under the title Battlecamp, and was passed on to me by an instructor at the gym I attend. The session looks like this: sprinting between four or five stations about twenty metres apart, we stop at each one to do a crunch, then a squat, then a push-up, then a lunge, and I added a fifth station last time, a calf raise, before sprinting back the seventy or so metres to the start. After that we increase the number of repeats by one each time: lap two, two of each exercise; lap three, three, and so on in ever increasing numbers. This goes on for 15 to 20 minutes, by which time runners may have got up to ten or twelve of each exercise if they have been pushing it and haven t lost count. We could go on for longer than the April 2012 Vetrunner Page 23 Strength Training for Distance Runners twenty minutes if it wasn't for the fact that a few of our group find this training somewhat challenging. But next time these group members could go for a shorter time and then be sent for a run "around the block" while the others continue on. I am making sure people keep moving; these exercises must build cardio fitness as well as strength. On the other hand, I make sure that everyone performs the exercises with good form and not too fast, as the benefit comes from completing each exercise in a controlled manner. The penalty for incorrect form can be soreness leading to injury. And of course I encourage the group to go as fast as possible in the sprints between stations, and the sprints back to the start. In addition to the exercises mentioned above, chin-ups and dips are good too. But I have noticed that some of the personal training groups around town are doing exercises I would never recommend. Star jumps are just too jarring; straight legged sit-ups are ill advised for inflexible running types like us; frog hopping up steps is just too risky for ageing people, especially in wet weather I would have thought! The list probably goes on. But the idea is good, and the sky is the limit when it comes to devising different versions and variations of such a training session. For specialist distance runners there is little reason to do weight workouts at the gym. Using body weight/gravity is sufficient, which is why I like these bootcamp exercises as a supplement to running, running, running. But we are only planning to do this kind of circuit about one week in four or five, and even then only in the warmer months of the year, unless this winter is a particularly mild one. Running; all kinds of running; is the main thing....by Geoff Moore, who daily updates running and training advice at http://geoffmoore.blogspot.com

and 2011 she made the 200 th monthly throwing handicap a memorable occasion. She not only conducted the event she also arranged sponsorship, made commemorative clothing, anniversary cake and organized a celebratory evening. Has unique honour of being able to wear the commemorative 200 shirt for both monthly running and throwing handicaps. In June 1990 Trish created the monthly throwing handicap and has been its organizer, handicapper and driving force ever since - as well as having participated in every one of the 216 competitions. She was the recipient of the 2006 and 2010 Pat Clohessy Trophy. She served nine years on committee. She organised the 1995 Australian Throws Pentathlon Championships. Page 26 April 2012 Vetrunner At the end of each season we acknowledge those who have performed superbly in competition or have contributed significantly to the successful conduct of our athletics program. This is the club s 30 th season of conducting regular track and field competition and many of our annual awards have a long and fascinating history. Our annual track and field awards Adler Series Pennington Series Moore Award Daniels Series Perry Series Anthony Series Green Award Boag Awards National Heart Foundation Trophy Fristad Trophies Johnson Trophy (Only winners of the decade 2000 2011 are listed. The complete list was published in Vetrunner, March 2008 and are now also available on the club s website. If you require more information about pre 2000 winners see Bryan Thomas). Adler Track Handicap Series is a unique series of distance handicap races created by life member Mike Adler in 1988. Two years later Tony Booth proposed runners move out a lane at the end of each lap so it became the spiral handicap. Trophies are presented to the highest scoring male and female in the season s point score. In its first season the series was conducted in one division, then from 1990 to 2002 it was in two divisions (back and front-markers) and from 2003 to 2005 the series reverted to one division. Then the following year the series was again modified to recognise both male and female winners. 2000 Damian Rutledge and Bev Breen 2001 Nigel Coldrick and Bev Breen 2002 Terry Levings and Bev Breen 2003 Roger Stewart (one division) 2004 Michael Gardner 2005 Nigel Coldrick 2006 Gary Bowen and Katie Forestier (M & W) 2007 Terry Levings and Kerry Boden 2008 Roger Pilkington and Kathy Sims 2009 John Lamb and Kerry Boden 2010 John Donovan and Ruth Baussmann 2011 Graeme Patrick and Helen Larmour 2012? and? Moore Award for the best male and female 3000m runners throughout the season as determined by averaging their five best performances measured against WMA age standards. This award was introduced in the 2005-06 season and recognises the contributions to our athletics program and the outstanding performances over this distance by life member Geoff Moore. 2006 M Leahey (M50) and M. McSpadden (W55) 2007 P Considine (M45) and Kathy Sims (W55) 2008 B Graham (M45) and Anne Young (W70) 2009 B Graham (M45) and Anne Young (W70) 2010 B Graham (M45) and Anne Young (W70) 2011 B Graham (M45) and K Southgate (W50) 2012? and? (In the brief history of this series Bruce Graham has four consecutive victories and Anne Young has a hat trick of wins). Daniels Sprint Handicap Series of handicapped races over both100m and 200m commenced in 1994 and has proved popular with specialist and occasional sprinters alike as well as spectators because of the exciting and close finishes in most races. The series is named after life member Ken Daniels who was one of our most prominent sprinters from the very beginning of ACTVAC in 1979. 2000 Bev Breen and Ian Daley 2001 Bev Breen and Kevin Matthews 2002 Bev Breen and Craig Edwards 2003 Jennifer Krevatin and Kevin Matthews 2004 Sharon Gibbins and Ken Telfer 2005 Maureen Rossiter and Kevin Matthews 2006 Vicki Matthews and Craig Edwards 2007 Jill Brown and Jack Thackray 2008 Anne Travis and Duncan Macnicol 2009 Sharon de Smet and Kevin Matthews 2010 Consie Larmour and D Macnicol / Jim White 2011 Sharon de Smet and Leo Kennedy 2012? and? (The first recipients of the Fristad Award in 1983 were M55 thrower Charlie Rann and W35 race-walker Judy Johnson. Several of our most talented athletes have won the trophy more than once; they are Margaret Taylor seven times, Elaine Cooper 5; Don Fraser and Charlie Rann 4 each; Bob Banens, Janice Banens, Ray Green and Jayne Hardy 3 apiece while Gordon Boag, Kevin Chamberlain, Ken Daniels, Joan Hooper and Judy Johnson have each won twice). Johnson Trophy for Club-Person of the Season emphasises the importance of members being involved in all aspects of our track and field program; participating, officiating, socialising and helping with many of the mundane tasks necessary to conduct a successful athletics season. The original trophy was proposed and donated by Maggi and Alan Johnson during our first full season in 1982-83. 2000 Jen Bourke 2001 Neil and Kerry Boden 2002 Jayne Hardy 2003 Mike Adler, Doug Fry, Jim O Donnell and John Suiter 2004 Alice Scott 2005 Val Chesterton 2006 Rob and Rosemary Parker 2007 Raylea Rudov 2008 Alice Scott 2009 Kevin Chamberlain 2010 Jim White 2011 Robin Whyte 2012? (In 1983 Bev Macleod was the first to be honoured with this prestigious award. Since then Doug Fry, Jim O Donnell and John Suiter have each been awarded this special recognition on three occasions; while Mike Adler, John Hunt and Alice Scott have had their name engraved on the trophy twice. In 2003 the award was presented to the foursome (Mike Adler, Doug Fry, Jim O Donnell and John Suiter) that seemed to have kept the whole program running smoothly for many seasons. On five occasions the trophy has been won by a family team; firstly by Alan and Maggie Johnson in 1985, then Peter and Anni Schiworski 1986, Al and Joan Mallory 1989, Neil and Kerry Boden 2001 and in 2006 by Robert and Rosemary Parker). Yellow Pages Map 50 E1.The entrance to the Nature Park is on Antill St just past the last houses in Hackett Course Description COURSE DESCRIPTION Majura 29 April 2012 9am start All three out and back courses start about 50m inside the nature park fence. The track heads South East parallel to the Hackett house fences and then turns South behind the houses. This continues for about 2.3km when the courses join the main Mt Ainslie track and turn right. The turnaround point for the Frylink and Waddell courses (at 2.5km) is about 200m past this point. The short course distance is 5.0km. The Thomas course continues along the main Mount Ainslie track past the reservoir and for about 800m further to the turn around point at 5.0km. The long course distance is 10.0km. Run/Walk Handicap The Handicap sub-committee would like to thank all those members who responded to the request for new courses. All contributions were welcome and considered against our criteria. As a result of this selection process we have identified several possible replacements for existing courses as our needs arise. In other words as existing courses become unusable or unavailable to the club in the future we are now in a better position to find a suitable replacement as we have done this year with the Aranda Bushlands course replacing the Campbell Park course. This new course appears to have been well received by club members. This exercise is now completed, however, if you feel that you have new suggestions regarding possible new courses please do not hesitate to inform this committee. Regards Tony Fenotti for Handicap Sub-committee
