Usually the meeting takes no more than half an hour. ********************************************************************************** CHAIRMAN S REPORT I am delighted to report on what has been an excellent year for Dunblane Sports Club. We entered an unprecedented number of teams in local, county and national leagues, winning a range of titles across tennis and squash, adult and junior competitions. Our coaching programmes have grown, with a number of well-qualified and engaging coaches delivering a range of sessions each week. The club championships were both popular and played in a great spirit, and club nights have again been busy. Players from Dunblane have represented the local district, county and Scotland in competition, and we saw the reintroduction of social events, including a club barbeque and successful quiz night. I would like to thank everyone who volunteered and gave their time and effort for the good of the club over the past year. Being on the board may not be the most glamourous of roles, but the hardwork and dedication of board members (often the small things that may not be noticed) is vital to the sound functioning of the club. The team captain/organiser role can often be a stressful one picking teams, communicating with others, and entering results so a big thank you to all those who took on these positions. Help around events, open days, and travel is always welcome so thank you to everyone involved. We are entering an interesting period for the club. The board have been discussing how best to move forward, particularly in terms of the clubhouse and infrastructure. A number of options have been considered thank you to those who have contributed concerning the existing courts, what improvements we could make, what connections might be created with other organisations/clubs, and what new facilities we might develop. These internal discussions are taking place in the context of a range of external variables/developments. As this report indicates, we are coming to these issues from a position of relative strength; but we need to ensure that any investments we make are the right ones for our continued success. MEMBERSHIP Membership for 2017 was 321 exactly the same figure as It is pleasing to see the number stablise following the decreases of 2015 and There was a spike in membership (particularly mini and juniors) during the years of the London Olympics and Andy Murray s first Grand Slam successes that fell away in subsequent years. Membership numbers during the 2000 s averaged 249 a year; the 2017 figure is therefore encouraging, with a strong number of subscriptions so far in We believe membership fees (retained at the same level since 2014) represent good value for money particularly compared to other racket sport clubs in the area. We are keen to attract new members so please do recommend us to those who may be interested. SQUASH 2017 Squash Championships Men s: Callum Davidson (winner), Bruce Smith (runner-up) Ladies: Bernie Beattie (winner), Maureen Carroll (runner-up) Men s Plate: Ash McClenaghan (winner) Boy s: Robbie Harper (winner), Niall Baxter (runner-up) Girls: Louise Hunter (winner), Cathryn Hegarty (runner-up)

3 Teams 2017/18 Both of our Crieff and District teams have had successful seasons so far. At time of writing the 1 st team sit top of Division 1, and the 2 nd team top of Division 2, both with four matches to play. The 1 st team reached the Addison Cup Final, narrowly losing to Crieff 1. The Ladies team have played friendly matches against Oban, and in a Central and West team friendly competition last month. The junior team have also played matches in the Central league. Coaching Coach Maureen has continued to provide a range of sessions to juniors wishing to take up and then improve their squash. This year we also welcomed Lisa McKenna ex world number 37 to our coaching team. Lisa provides individual, junior and adult group sessions. For more details please see the coaching noticeboards. Numerous players from Dunblane are in the Central performance and development squads. We have secured funds from Clubsport Stirling for the training of up to five club members on their Level 1 coaching course. Hopefully dates for these courses can be confirmed soon, as having a bank of trained coaches will help the squash programme grow. Squash Events We ran a Mixed Handicap tournament in November, with winner Duncan Hegarty just beating Bernie Beattie in a final game. In the Plate competition Keith Gavin won with Rowan Niven finishing runner up. Mini leagues continue to be popular with about 20 adults and strong juniors taking part. There is also a Junior mini league for juniors to arrange their own matches. The club, led by coach Maureen, ran two new Bronze tournaments in October and February. These are Scottish Squash events intended for juniors just beginning to enter tournaments and playing outside their clubs. These were both successful and enjoyed by all. We hosted the Central Junior Closed 2017, with some great results and titles for Dunblane players. Five of our players were selected to represent the Central region in the prestigious end of season tournament at Colinton Castle in April. Central finished with a 1 st at U19, 4 th at U17, 3 rd at U15, U13 and U11. Well done all involved! We will be hosting a Girls Do Squash event on 11 th March this is aimed at women and girls of all ages and abilities to try squash in a safe, fun and social environment. The adult championships will be middle/end of March, the junior championships in April. TABLE TENNIS We have attempted to run a club night on Monday evenings with limited success. We have the equipment and the space for Table Tennis, so would like to see it grow at the Club. If you think you can help please do get in touch. TENNIS Team Results 2017 Numerous teams from Dunblane competed in the Tennis Central Scotland leagues, a men s team in the National League, and (new for 2017) minis and juniors in the North of Scotland leagues. We had 142 players on the spring/summer classes, and 110 braving the winter classes. New Easter and Summer camps ran in 2017, details for 2018 will be released soon. We successfully bid for funding from Clubsport Stirling to support club member Sammy McKinney complete his LTA Level 3 coach training. We are keen to help other members get their coaching badges, please get in touch if you are interested. Tennis Events A number of our promising juniors are part of the Central and Tennis Scotland squads at the Gannochy, and on elite pathway programmes. Players from Dunblane represented the Central District at Kilgraston (including the winning 12&U team), the North of Scotland in various County

5 Cups, and Eilidh Davidson represented Scotland in the Four Nations Championship. Congratulations to all those involved! We have introduced new internal competition for adults through box leagues for singles and ladies doubles. Many thanks to Phil Wilson and Judith Smith for taking these on. Developing internal competition and match-play events (for adults and juniors) is one of our key aims for The regional Mini Murrays and Double Trouble events were held here in May. These fun events, aimed at club players rather than elite squads, test a range of skills and games. Teams from Dunblane made it through to compete at the final event at Gleneagles. We also hosted two Tennis on the Road events, led by Judy Murray, in conjunction with Dunblane High School s school of tennis initiative. We hosted the Tennis Central Scotland Closed competition in August. There were a number of strong performances (and victories) from Dunblane players across both the adult and junior competitions. Well done to all involved and thank you to members who helped with the competition organisation and finals day barbeque. BUILDINGS & GROUNDS General maintenance of the Clubhouse has continued over the last year, including a new storage container for club equipment. The tennis courts are due to be rejuvenated from the week beginning Monday 12 th March, two courts the first week, the other two the week after. This process should significantly improve the playability of the surface and reduce the need for cancellation or delays due to flooding through improved drainage. SOCIAL September saw the return of the club Quiz Night. This was expertly hosted by Paul Forsyth, thoroughly enjoyable, and made a small profit for the club. The barbeque timed to coincide with the Central closed finals was also excellent, pointing the way to future events of this kind. Further social events are being planned for The 200 club has been closed due to dwindling numbers and the bank stopping the issue of cheque books for the account. The board feels our financial position remains healthy, with a profit being made despite the significant investment made in the tennis coaching programme.
