2 Our mission The clubs mission is described in the constitution as follows: 1. To promote the Club in Australia. 2. To teach and enhance the skills of volleyball. 3. To acquire and maintain a League status as defined by Volleyball SA. 4. To promote excellence in all areas associated with volleyball. 5. To organise and conduct any profit making ventures as to make financially viable any action to improve the status of the Club, as deemed necessary or desirable by the presiding committee, but not for the purpose of making a profit or gain for the members thereof. 6. To increase public awareness, appreciation, and participation in the sport of volleyball. 7. To promote team spirit and sportsmanship of the highest standard. 8. To provide a social environment for all members Our History Our Club, Our Story Henley Hawks as it is known today is the result of a merger between two clubs, Henley Hawks and Campbelltown Cheetahs Volleyball Club. Through this merger, Henley Hawks hold the title of Adelaide s second oldest continuously operating club. We also hold the title of Adelaide s premier community volleyball club. Here is a story about our humble beginnings. Henley Hawks ( ): Henley Hawks started life in 1976 as Henley Old Scholars; a group of Henley High School graduates with a desire to play but with no place to train. Founding members included the families of Reynolds and ven Hoek. Training was initially held at the Seaton High School gymnasium until the Old Scholars pooled their resources and built a new gym at the Henley High School in Things progressed well for a number of years and when club was 10 years old the club changed it s name and become Henley Hawks Volleyball Club. This was in line with the community clubs at the time the Henley Hawks Football Club (now Henley Sharks) and the Henley Hawks Tennis Club. Campbelltown Cheetahs ( ): Campbelltown Cheetahs was established by Sue Dansie. However, Campbelltown Cheetahs struggled to form a management committee and merged with the Hawks in Henley Hawks ( ): The strength of the inaugural committee including Rick Daniels, Trish Virag, Tracy Gibbs, Paul Finn and others resulted in a strong women s and men s program and the evolution of a club junior programme. Most of these people stayed involved in the committee until 2005 and also saw the retirement of a number of the women s League team members and the election of several new committee members beginning a new focus for the club. Henley Hawks ( ): Again, enthusiasm to form a management committee waned with the retirement of the majority of the previous committee. The club was unable to maintain a male league coach and team due to the reduction in interest and suitably qualified playing members. A new management committee was unable to be formed at the 2009 Annual General Meeting and was subsequently formed at the exceptional AGM. An association was formed with Adelaide University Volleyball Club which saw an injection of players. Ex-players from the Northern Suburbs also return to the club., 2010 also saw the retirement of Paul Finn from the Junior Co-ordinator role after a number of years of dedicated service. Henley Hawks ( ) In 2011 the men s league team was re-established under the coaching of Brad Tutton also saw the introduction of a new logo and playing uniform for the State League teams. Under the Presidency of Matt Lane, the League Men s team achieved a premiership in 2013 and an association was formed between the Hawks and the Tea Tree Gully Volleyball Association. However, success on the men s side was accompanied by issues in the women s side, with the club failing to field a league team between 2013 and saw the entry of the Adelaide University Volleyball Club into State League as the Blacks, and as a result many of the players associated with the Hawks through the link with the Blacks were lost to a new rival in the competition as well as a number of retirements from the League men s side. Following Matt Lane s retirement in 2014, Hamish Moore was elected president and guided the club through a difficult year in An extraordinary meeting was called at the conclusion of the 2015 season to examine the feasibility of the club. As a result of this meeting a largely new committee was formed and Michael Collins was elected president for Henley Hawks Volleyball Club Annual Report;

5 PRESIDENT S REPORT 2016 was a mixed year for Henley. We continue to have strong participation numbers in the junior divisions, though we continue with limited success transitioning these players to the senior ranks. That being said, 2015 and 2016 have been reasonably successful in this respect, with a large number of players making the transition to the men s squad in 2015, and majority of these players continuing in This year also showed a good number of players making the transition to the women s squad, and two of our junior league players making State League debuts in The senior squads were highlighted by the return of the women s squad to the league ranks. We continue to rebuild both our squads for the future in light of recent player exits. Despite not making finals in any division, the performance of all teams was in line with the stage of development I believe we are at at the moment, and many teams finished in fifth place, just outside the finals. The largest issue for the both squads remains player numbers, with the division men s squad recording one forfeit this year and playing with minimum players in most rounds. The women s division squad was filled almost exclusively with players from the Tea Tree Gully Volleyball Association, underlining the club s current dependency on links with external associations for player numbers. This issue remains a priority for the club going forward. A number of fundraising and social activities were run this year, in a concerted effort to drive member engagement and provide a sociable environment as detailed by the club s constitution. These have had an increasing amount of success as the year progressed. Our club launch was minimally attended however the quiz night while only minimally effective financially was well attended and was a definite step in the right direction. Our Bunnings sausage sizzle event, was our most successful fundraising event for the year. I would like to thank our primary sponsor, Snooze Gepps Cross for their support this year, driven by past president Matt Lane. Matt s contribution made it possible this year to restock our uniforms and also provide training for our divisional women s team. I would also like to thank Mandy Collins and David Limareff from the Lady Daly Hotel and Minnesota Fats Pool and Billiards bar for their support in providing venues throughout the year, including our end of year presentation. Henley Beach Foodland has also made a much appreciated contribution to our fundraising efforts this year. A special acknowledgement should also go to our most effective fundraiser for the year, who was Mayble Yu. While I acknowledge that we have many hurdles remaining to overcome in 2017, I am confident that the club has taken the correct first steps to re-establish itself as a major player in the State League competition. 6 OUR OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES The club began 2016 with a budget in place to achieve a modest profit. We began the year with more than $8,000 owing to VSA for the 2015 season, and required summer league and Spikezone fees to be paid from the junior arm of the club to clear these pre-existing debts. The budget was tiered based on the availability of grant funding, and grants were actively applied for throughout the year. We were not successful in achieving grant funding in 2016, and so contingent spending on this funding, which included equipment replacement, beach equipment and coach education delayed to The club set a fundraising goal of $6000, which was achieved with the final fundraising event of the year! Club membership fees remain the primary source of revenue for the club, however the increased focus on fundraising in 2016 has certainly assisted the club in achieving its goal of a modest profit, despite the requirement to defer an amount of spending to next year. A financial statement for 2016 follows. Already planned and in place for 2017 is a repeat of our most successful fundraising activities for the year, with the club having been assigned a date for a Bunnings sausage sizzle day and is registered for the credit union lottery as it has been in previous years. 8 HOW YOU CAN HELP Become a member The club definitely remains on the lookout for players at all levels. If you have considered returning to volleyball, or know someone who is, I would encourage you to engage with someone at the club and find out which options are right for you. Volunteer your time We are very much in need of coaches and administrators. If you believe you could fill one of these roles, the club will definitely help you to find a role that can suit you! Make a donation Fund raising activities are far easier with goods and services as prizes and saleable items! If you aren t in a position to make a personal contribution to these activities, please consider appealing to businesses you frequent for these types of items. The club is happy to assist in providing details to these businesses to assist. Support an event or fundraising activity The club will be successful as long as its members are engaged. I would strongly encourage all club members to support as many club events as they can. Not only are they great fun, they will help you get to know your club mates and create an environment critical to player recruitment and longevity.
