October s Spirit Night at Potbelly Sandwich Shop! Thanks for your continued support!

Check out Mr. Bateman s Website at www.spnpe.weebly.com Deep Squat There is a steady drop in ability to perform the deep squat from 3rd to 8th grade, except for the spike back up in 7th grade. The 7th grade has always been an exceptionally athletic class. Is it a coincidence that they also have an increase in ability to assume this position? I don't think so. The deep squat is attainable! If you cannot do it yet, (and I could not when I first read of its importance) you can scale it back by holding onto a fixed object or having a wall against your back. What is the deep squat? Toes pointing forward. Feet a fist s width apart. Heels on the ground. Butt to heels. Fitness Stations The SPN gym is open to students in grades 3-8 as soon as the school doors open. Students have the opportunity to complete 5 stations spending two minutes at each station. Students work in a group of four giving them the opportunity to be active, socialize, compete, and get stronger. Stations change periodically to develop new strengths and skills. Current stations are; jump rope, push up, squat, Turkish get-up, and wall ball/deadlift. Students have been taught each station in PE class and understand that the #1 goal of strength training is to avoid injury, and the second goal is to get stronger. During stations we train strength because through strength we gain endurance, but not vice versa. Seesaw App Grades 3-8 have been using the Seesaw app to create videos of strength skills. The app allows us to comment on each other s videos so we improve from feedback. Mileage club An optional activity provided for students at recess is the Mileage Club. When a student chooses to participate in the Mileage Club, they run or walk around a designated 1/8 mile loop. While they are moving, they carry a mileage card with them. After completing each lap, their card is checked off. Every 8 laps is a mile. The card holds 40 laps. When a student completes their card (5 miles), they turn it in and receive a foot token. A foot token is a plastic foot that comes in a variety of colors. Special foot tokens are awarded for 10 miles (glow in the dark) and 25 miles (marathon foot token). The Billion Mile Race SPN is part of the Billion Mile Race. Every time a student completes a mileage club card, their 5 miles is added to SPN's total. Currently our goal is 500 miles. At the time of this writing we are #1 in our district!

Many thanks to Russell and Valerie Bateman for donating a flag to our school! Pictured here are Mr. Bateman and Bryce doing the honors of hoisting up the new flag!
