SAILING ASSOCIATION OF MARCO COMMODORE S CABIN Ken Bardon, Commodore ADVICE FROM THE VICE Micki Gobeil, Vice Commodore February turned out to be a wonderful sailing month, with perfect breezes and unusual warmth for this time of year...certainly much better than freezing January. Special kudos should go out to Bob Diamond for coordinating the inter-club events such as the lunch at Mango s and a funfilled cruising weekend at Panther Key. Also, thanks to Peter Coggins for the detailed navigation information he provided for getting to Panther Key. I was very honored by the large turnout for my presentation on my trip to Africa for the Habitat for Humanity build and the wonderful response and interest you showed on the follow up presentation from the local Collier County Habitat representative, Andrea McKenna. Continuing in the spirit of community service, our new SAMI treasurer, Fiona Winter, has proposed a food drive for the poor and hungry people of Collier County. Please remember to bring some food donations to the March meeting. Fiona will deliver the collection to the appropriate charities. I m looking forward to your continued interest in the various SAMI activities and events. In This Issue. It s so tough living here in Paradise The saying "real men don't eat quiche" was proven to be a misnomer at the February 8 th SAMI Membership/Dinner Meeting. Thanks to the SAMI Chefs, who prepared nine assorted types of quiche, and to the "Real Men" present, only a few crumbs were left over. The next Membership/Dinner Meeting is scheduled for March 8 th from 6-9 at the Capri Community Center. In celebration of St. Patrick's Day, the cuisine will be the Traditional Corned Beef and Cabbage, with assorted salads, rolls, and dessert. The meeting topic will be "Recovery" with guest speaker Patrick A. Connolly. Also, jot down some ideas you believe would make SAMI activities more fun and interesting and plan to share them during an Open Forum at the meeting. Please RSVP by March 4 th, to let us know if you plan to attend, how many guests, and what dish you will prepare, to: 642-4241 or mickigo@embarqmail.com. Thank you in advance for attending and continuing to support SAMI by being an active member - and remember guests are always welcome.
CRUISIN ABOUT AROUND THE BUOYS Peter Coggins, Rear Commodore Rob Reiley, Fleet Captain Racing season is under way! GCSC is hosting their Spring Regatta on March 10th. They are doing a distance race from the Naples Pier to San Carlos mark off of Ft. Myers Beach, with a party to follow. It promises to be a good event. We at SAMI are busy finalizing the details for our Bud Light Regatta. The actual regatta is a BOTY event held on Saturday, April 21st. On Sunday there will be an easy pursuit race off of Marco Beach. This will be followed by the Awards Ceremony and monthly SAMI meeting on the deck at the Speakeasy. We hope to see some active SAMI participation in the event. A new event, the Most Memorable Regatta has been scheduled for 5/18 5/19. This will be the longest regatta of the year and will run from Ft. Myers to the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. It should be an exciting new venue. Let me share something special with you... something that technology has enhanced significantly. Here is a review of a new, but time-tested, technique that modifies the design and construction of mooring lines and pendants that creates a much more robust and reliable permanent mooring something that simplifies and significantly improves a very important boat sub-system our mooring system. See you around the buoys! CRUISIN ABOUT (continued) The change is the use of a HEAVY nylon line (white) from the mooring ball up to the double-pennants (blue). This nylon line has an eye splice and the pendants have eye splices at both ends; they are joined using a Lunch Pail Hitch (sometimes called a Cow Hitch ). The heavy nylon has wonderful high elasticity (stretching about 10 percent under a load equaling 20 percent of its tensile strength) and the new Polyester line, Dyneema pendants have enormous tensile strength and high abrasion resistance AND they float. Adding a float (or 2) on the nylon line keeps it on the surface when the mooring is unoccupied. Their combined length should be about 2-½ times the freeboard at the bow. Effective chafe protection is still highly recommended where the pendants run through the bow chocks. The use of shackles from the mooring ball to the boat has been minimized and when they are used, the shackles between the bottom chains (protected down in the mud) are galvanized and those at the mooring ball are stainless steel to minimize the chances for marine growth and corrosion near the surface. This is a Lunch Pail or Cow Hitch. Because the top and bottom sections are just looped together through their spliced eyes, you can replace a damaged section without replacing the entire pendant. For use when I go cruising I have a assembled a portable pendant for use when tying up to transient mooring ball with an empty top eye. For a wonderful, detailed description please see this article:https://www.google.com/search? q=constructing+a+permanent+mooring&rlz=1c1ldjz_enus 498US508&oq=Constructing+a+Permanent+Mooring&aqs=c hrome..69i57.8188j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=utf-8 Hopefully, you will now be able to sleep better 2
