CZECH REPUBLIC From a tourist point of view, the Czech Republic can be so much more than the majestic Prague Castle, the charming city of Prague as a whole, the breathtaking Český Krumlov, the wonderful Kutná Hora, the unique town of Telč and the famous Pilsner beer. Sport has always been an integral and natural part of all Czechs life; its strong tradition in the country traces back many decades. With roughly 10 million inhabitants, the Czechs are a rather small nation compared to other countries. However, they are also great athletes with major successes as well as big sports fans in general. Moreover, they are avid recreational athletes in particular, alpine skiing is one of the most popular activities among Czechs. Špindlerův Mlýn and its surroundings in the heart of the Giant Mountains, the most famous and most popular mountains in the Czech Republic, are one of the most popular destinations for this activity. In this approximately 35 kilometer long area, the northernmost Central European mountain wall is located; its mountain tops offer a unique study material for natural scientists. They call the mountain ridge the Arctic island in the middle of Europe : it is a peculiar landscape with peculiar people and a place filled with many legends. That is what makes the mountains, which have been part of the Giant Mountains National Park since 1963, a truly fascinating spot. Tourists have been admiring the area for centuries as the Giant Mountains have always been a popular tourist destination. This is also where the highest Czech mountain Sněžka (1,603 meters above sea level) is found. Not every Czech has visited Špindlerův Mlýn, but everyone knows the city. And it is not only known for skiing. 02 03
ŠPINDLERŮV MLÝN Unique and fascinating in many ways, Špindlerův Mlýn is the largest and most famous mountain resort in the Czech Republic. Rich history and cultural heritage merge into a breathtaking concoction which is with respect to traditions reflected in modern times. The city lies at an altitude of 575 to 1,555 meters above the sea level, only 8 kilometers away from the spring of the river Elbe. If there is no snow on the mountain ridges, the spring is a popular tourist attraction. The city is the heart and soul of tourism in the Giant Mountains both in summer and in winter. In addition to family and sports tourism, this location is also popular for holding business meetings and conventions by both local and foreign visitors. However, Špindlerův Mlýn is especially famous for the excellent conditions for winter sports, most notably for alpine skiing. The city is ready to accommodate tourists: there are large hotels, plenty of modern guest houses as well as other authentic and renovated buildings. In terms of the importance and the quality of services offered, Špindlerův Mlýn is often called the Czech Aspen. 04 05

After three successful events in 2005, 2008 and 2011, Ladies World Cup races will be held in the Czech Republic and Špindlerův Mlýn for the fourth time. For a rather small ski resort, the previous events had a very good attendance and TV ratings. The March 2019 event will once again host the last slalom and giant slalom races of the World Cup series before the Andorra final. The races in Špindlerův Mlýn will decide who will qualify for the World Cup finals; it is also possible that small globe and even the overall World Cup ranking winners will be decided here. 07

SKIAREÁL ŠPINDLERŮV MLÝN With 27 kilometers of downhill slopes, three snow parks and 85 kilometers of cross-country skiing trails, Skiareál Špindlerův Mlýn is the best equipped ski resort in the Czech Republic. The whole ski resort consists of five parts: Svatý Petr (the most important sports center in terms of length and elevation of downhill skiing slopes; the best quality in the country), Medvědín (sunny slopes perfect for recreational skiing), Horní Mísečky (perfect for beginners and children), Hromovka (the longest night skiing in the country on a 1.5 kilometer long slope), Labská (a part located at the Labská dam, a small resort that is especially popular among families with children). In total, there are 6 cableways for skiers and 11 ski lifts with a transport capacity of at least 21,000 people per hour. Czech ski (Svaz lyžařů České republiky) Czech ski is the oldest national ski association in the world, celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2003. The association then named the Association of Skiers of the Czech Kingdom was founded on 21st November 1903 in Jablonec nad Jizerou at a meeting of three representatives of the first ski clubs in the Czech lands. 12 13
