Lyon County Extension Homemaker Newsletter April Showers My question for you this month is, if March showers bring April showers that are supposed to bring May flowers, than where did the March winds go and what are we going to do with all this rain? Is anyone else ready to see some sunshine and a little dryer weather? If the rain leaves you feeling drenched, make sure to check out the calendar of events to find something to keep you so busy you forget all about the dampness outside. While you are staying inside it is a good time to make sure your volunteer logs are up to date for the year. I know you have spent a lot of time being the good since last July so now is a great time to get all your volunteer time on paper and ready to be submitted in a couple of months. Here s to some springy sunshiny weather. I m holding out hope that it is on the way! -Angie April 2018 day you won t soon forget. I know many of you are very resistant to change, but I encourage you to come with an open mind and willingness to join in and celebrate another year of all the great accomplishments you have achieved. Mark June 21, 2018 on your calendar and get ready to have a hoot, a hootenanny that is Cultural Arts 2018 Congratulations 2018 Cultural Arts winners!! As usual, Lyon County Homemakers did a great job showcasing their talent at the Pennyrile Area Cultural Arts competition in March. With forty entries submitted, more than half of those entries came back with ribbons. Thank you so much for your willingness to participate and your willingness to share your talents with others in our area and around the state. The items will then be left at the office for me to take to state competition the next week. If you have any questions about this, please let me know. Thank you so much for sharing your items for the competition. Help Needed Every nine years the Lyon County 4-H program is in charge of hosting the Area 4-H Communications Day. When it is Lyon County s turn to host, it is all hands on deck at the Extension Office. To help Wanda in making a successful day I have volunteered to be in charge of the hospitality room. The problem with that is..i certainly can t do it alone. I need several volunteers to help me provide dinner and snacks for all the judges who will be helping with Communications Day. My current plan is to provide a baked potato bar with all the fixins as well as some appetizer type snacks and of course some sweets. We will also need paper plates, plastic silverware, other paper type products, and drinks. In your April meetings, please be looking for the sign-up sheet to let me know what you would be willing to bring for serving on the night of the event. Communications day will take place on May 11, 2018 and it will be a night event. We will be serving approximately 70 people. I will also need 3 or 4 people who are willing to help me from just after lunch until the event is over that night. This will be to help set up the food, keep the serving line clean and refilled, and to help with clean up after the event. Of course, the more that are willing to help, we can sign up in shifts and work fewer hours. Please be thinking about helping our 4-H program with the event and keep an eye out for the sign-up sheet in your monthly meeting. For members at large, please call or stop by the office to let us know how you would like to help with this event. Vision for Kenya An International Project WOW! We had 11 people drop by to help on our Vision for Kenya workday and they were certainly a productive group! Together we made more than 230 eye glass cases. If you would like to sew at home, patterns and fabrics are available at the Extension office. Please consider helping us to reach the goal of making 2000 eye glass cases. If you have questions about the project please call the office at 270-388-2341. Calling All Quilters 2018 KEHA Quilt Square Auction The KEHA Quilt Square Showcase and Auction will continue for the sixth consecutive year at the KEHA State Meeting. Anyone wishing to participate should make and donate for auction a 12 finished quilt square. (Finished means piece the square, put in the batting, put on backing and finish the edges just like you would a complete quilt) This special showcase is an 2

opportunity to highlight quality work from KEHA members across the state. As you prepare your quilt square, consider designs that you would want to purchase. Please write your name and county name on a small slip of paper and attach to the back side of the square. All squares must be turned into the Lyon County Extension Office by Friday May 4, 2018 for transportation to the state meeting. Date Change Due to unforeseen scheduling issues, Jill Harris, Todd County Agent, who is teaching the June leader lesson, needs to reschedule the date she visits Lyon County to May 31, 2018 at 10:00 AM. Please check your calendar if you previously signed up to attend this class for your club and ask someone to come in your place if you are unable to attend. This is the lesson entitled, Sweet enough without all that Sugar. Sewing Machine for Sale The Lyon County Homemakers were gifted a Singer 301- A sewing machine in the cabinet. I have not tried to sew with the machine but it looks to be in great shape. Comparing to machines listed on ebay and other websites, the 301-A sells for around $150. This one can be had for a $75 donation to the Lyon County Homemakers. Tax receipts are available for the donation. For more information on the machine please refer to last month s newsletter or call the office at 270-388-2341. teachers that are featured each month. In trying to keep with the times, we are using Pinterest as a source for trendy ideas that fit within the traditional Home Economics programming. If you have a talent that needs to be shared and a passion for teaching others, please talk with me about teaching a Pinterest Interest class in the new Homemaker year. We would love to see new and varied ideas on next year s calendar, and that begins with you! Dog Bed Workshop Just an update on the great work done by Lyon County Homemakers and Lyon County Girl Scouts last month. In an afternoon workshop, the Girl Scouts made 11 dog beds. In a one day workshop the Homemakers were able to complete 49 dog beds. Together 60 dog beds were delivered to the Mary Hall Ruddiman Canine Shelter. All the beds were used making recycled materials that would have otherwise been destined for the landfill. Charity work with a positive effect on the environment. The new Homemaker Pinterest Interest club has been a huge success and much of that success can be attributed to the wonderful guest 3
