Navy has reeled off consecutive wins against Colgate (67-55), Loyola (75-62), Lafayette (88-51), Lehigh (75-72), Army (96-80 OT), and American (71-53). Five of Navy s last six wins have been by double digits. Navy s win at American on Wednesday snapped a nine-game losing streak at Bender Arena for Navy. Junior Bryce Dulin scored 15 points to lead five players in double figures on Wednesday. Junior Tom Lacey posted his fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Lacey had 10 offensive rebounds, one shy of his own school record. Sophomore point guard Hasan Abdullah tallied 14 points with five assists, while sophomore George Kiernan and junior Shawn Anderson each scored 10. During Navy s six-game winning streak, the Mids are shooting 51 percent from the field and 42 percent on 3-pointers. Navy is averaging 79 points during the last six games, outscoring its opponents by a scoring margin of +16.5 and outrebounding its opponents by a margin of +8.8. In Navy s three Patriot League losses before the winning streak, Navy shot just 39 percent from the floor, 30 percent on 3-pointers and averaged 53 points. Navy has won six straight conference games for the second straight season. A win on Saturday would give Navy a seventh straight conference win, its longest streak since a 12-game regular season conference winning streak that spanned the 2000 and 2001 seasons. Anderson, who recently scored 30 points in Navy s win at Army, leads Navy in scoring at 12.3 points per game. Anderson shares the team lead of 3.1 assists per game and is second with 5.2 rebounds per game. Mids Suffer Close Loses in First Two Patriot League Games Navy dropped its first two league games to Bucknell (59-55) and Holy Cross (51-50) by a combined five points. Navy led at halftime in both of its league losses. Bucknell outscored Navy, 10-2, in the final 2:30 of the contest and Holy Cross outscored Navy, 7-2, in the final 2:19 of that game. Navy led Bucknell by 13 points in the second half and led for 35 minutes in the game. Navy trailed by two points with 8.3 seconds left against Bucknell and missed two free throws that would have tied the game. Against Holy Cross, Navy led by as many as six points in the game. Navy led by one point over Holy Cross at 50-49 with 7.6 seconds left, but missed the frontend of a one-and-one free throw opportunity. However, Navy missed the free throw and Patrick Benzan scored the game-winning layup with 0.1 second left in the game. Navy has had 11 Players Score Double Figures 11 different players have scored in double figures for Navy through the first seven games of the season. Hasan Abdullah, Shawn Anderson, Ryan Pearson and James Hemphill scored in double figures against Ohio State in the season opener. Navy Rallies for School-Record 25-Point Comeback in Win Over Bryant Navy s 25-point comeback win over Bryant on Dec. 6, 2016 was its largest in school history. Navy trailed by 25 points at halftime at 49-24. Navy used a key 25-5 run over the first eight minutes of the second half to get back into the game. It was the second-largest halftime deficit overcome to win in NCAA history. The only game in NCAA history that saw a larger halftime deficit overcome for a win was Duke vs. Tulane on Dec. 30, 1950. Tulane led Duke by 29 at halftime at 56-27, but Duke rallied for a 74-72 win. It is tied for the 11th-largest overall comeback overcome to win in NCAA history. The largest ever is 32 points by Duke in the same game that it trailed by 29 at halftime to Tulane in 1950. Earlier this season, Utah Valley rallied from a 27-point first-half deficit to defeat Denver, 88-85. Navy s Did You Know? Navy s five seniors received their service assignments on Nov. 17. One program under the Forever Red Hurricanes organization is the Canes Coats for Kids, which solicits donations from the community to provide warm coats for children in need. There is also an annual coat drive at the New Castle Basketball Tip-Off Classic. Another program under the Forever Red Hurricanes is Transitioning to Success, which is a mentor program that helps sixth-graders transition to seventh grade. Anderson s sister, Tarina Nixon, was a two-time All-Ohio Valley player at Southeast Missouri State. Tim Abruzzo is a squad leader in the 19th Company at the Naval Academy. According to KenPom, Bryant s win probability was at about 98 percent at halftime. Bryant first took a 25-point lead at 47-22 with 45 seconds left in the first half and also led by 25 at halftime at 49-24. Navy took its first lead of the game at 73-72 with 38 seconds left on Tom Lacey s layup. After Bryant regained the lead at 74-73 with 26 seconds left, Shawn Anderson scored the game-winning layup with 13 seconds left. George Kiernan sealed the game by drawing an offensive charge with seven seconds left and Anderson made one free throw with six seconds left. Bryant missed a potential game-tying shot at the buzzer. Navy s previous school record for largest comeback overcome to win was 16, which the Mids achieved twice. Navy did it against Brown on Dec. 22, 2005 and against Mount St. Mary s on Nov. 28, 1987. Navy s previous record for largest halftime deficit overcome for a victory was 14 against Holy Cross on March 5, 1994. Lacey Sets School Offensive Rebound Record vs. Bryant Junior forward Tom Lacey grabbed a school-record 11 offensive rebounds in Navy s comeback win against Bryant on Dec. 6. Lacey had 16 points and a total of 17 rebounds in the contest, with 11 being on the offensive end. The previous school record for most offensive rebounds was 10, which Alex Kohnen had against St. Mary s (Md.) on Dec. 5, 1995. His 17 overall rebounds were the most by a Navy player since Matt Fannin had 19 against American in the 2004-05 season. Anderson Leads Navy to a 70-68 Win Over Penn Junior guard Shawn Anderson scored the go-ahead layup with 16 seconds remaining and then took a game-saving offensive charge with 1.4 seconds left to lead Navy to a 70-68 win over Penn on Nov. 26. Anderson scored a team-high 15 points in the contest and his layup off a dish from junior Bryce Dulin with 16 seconds left with Navy down one at 68-67 was his biggest basket of the game. On Penn s ensuing possession, Anderson drew a charge on Caleb Wood with 1.4 seconds left to thwart Penn s opportunity to re-take the lead. Anderson was then fouled with 0.5 seconds left and made one free throw to give Navy the 70-68 win. Anderson, who missed Navy s previous game, a win over UMBC on Nov. 23, scored in double figures for the 13th straight game. Navy Makes 11 3-Pointers in Win over UMBC Navy made a season-high 11 3-pointers in its win over UMBC on Nov. 23. Navy was 11-of-19 in the game for a 58 percent night. The 11 3-pointers were the most scored in a game by Navy since the Mids made 11 vs. Bucknell in the 2013-14 season. Zach Fong and George Kiernan each made three 3-pointers, Hasan Abdullah and Ryan Pearson each made two and Bryce Dulin made one. Wieck Notches Name in Freshman Record Book Freshman center Evan Wieck collected six offensive rebounds against High Point on Nov. 19. The six offensive rebounds are tied for the third most by a Navy freshman in program history. The six offensive rebounds are also the most by a Navy freshman since Greg Sprink accomplished the feat against Bucknell 12 seasons ago in the 2004-05 season. Derek Wall holds the record for most offensive rebounds by a freshman with eight against Gettysburg in the 1991-92 season. Abdullah Swipes Six Steals Against UNCG Sophomore guard Hasan Abdullah recorded six steals against UNCG on Nov. 20. The six steals were the most by a Navy player since J.J. Avila had six during the 2011-12 season. The six steals are tied for the sixth-most in a single game in program history. Jehiel Lewis owns the single-game record with 12 steals against Bucknell in 2002 and Chris Williams eight steals against Texas in 2000 is ranked second. Abdullah Returns From Hip Injury Sophomore point guard Hasan Abdullah had a promising start to his career at Navy over the first few games of the 2015-16 season, but was then slowed by a hip injury. Abdullah would later have season-ending hip surgery and missed the second half of his freshman season. Abdullah is now healthy and has taken control of the starting point guard position, replacing four-year starter and 2016 Naval Academy graduate Tilman Dunbar. DeChellis arrived at Navy after successful stints at East Tennessee State and Penn State, and is the 19th head basketball coach in the 109-year history of Navy basketball. In 2015-16, DeChellis helped Navy post its most wins in seven years with the team s 19-14 record. Navy was 9-9 in the Patriot League and finished in a four-way tie for fourth place. Navy s six-win improvement from the 2014-15 season ranked as the fourth-best improvement from one year to the next in program history. Navy also set a program record for most road wins in a season with 11. It was the fourth straight season that DeChellis increased Navy s overall and conference win total. Navy s defensive efforts were a key to the team s success in 2015-16. Navy led the Patriot League in scoring defense (64.7) and field goal percentage defense (.413). Will Kelly was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year and was also named to the all-league second team. Tilman Dunbar was named to the All- Patriot League Third Team. DeChellis has won at least 19 games at three different schools (East Tennessee State, Penn State and Navy). He is the only current Patriot League head coach that has accomplished that feat. DeChellis arrival in Annapolis has corresponded with an increase of exposure for the Navy men s basketball program. Navy was invited to compete in the inaugural Pearl Harbor Invitational in Hawai i in 2015-16 and competed in a field with Oregon, Oklahoma and 2016 National Champion Villanova. Navy also hosted the second annual Veterans Classic during the 2015-16 season, with top-ranked and eventual national runner-up North Carolina, Temple and Florida joining Navy in the field. In his fourth season in Annapolis in 2014-15, Navy tied for sixth place in the Patriot League standings with an 8-10 record in conference and the Mids were 13-19 overall. Navy s 13 wins overall was a four-win improvement from the previous season and it was the third straight season that DeChellis increased the team s win total from the previous season. Navy also doubled its conference win total (8) from the previous season (4). DeChellis led Navy to three wins over Army, including the Army- Navy Star Game and in the Patriot League Tournament. It was the fifth time in program history that Navy went 3-0 against Army in a single season. In 2014-15, Navy ranked second in the Patriot League in scoring defense, allowing 64.3 points per game and its turnover average of just 12.2 per game was the second-lowest in school history. Worth Smith was named to the All-Patriot League First Team and Kevin Alter was just one of five Division I players to be named to the Allstate NABC Good Works Team. Under the direction of DeChellis, the Navy basketball program began a new tradition in the 2014-15 season by hosting the inaugural Veterans Classic. Navy hosted Michigan State, while VCU faced Tennessee in the season-opening showcase in Alumni Hall. In his third season in Annapolis in 2013-14, DeChellis increased Navy s overall win total for the second straight season and Navy doubled its conference win total from the previous year. A highlight of the 2013-14 campaign was a 79-57 victory at Army in the Star Game, while the Mids also defeated Bucknell, the defending Patriot League Champion, and Lafayette, the 2013 runner-up. With defensive always being a staple of a DeChellis-coached club, Navy ranked 57th in the country in scoring defense, giving up just 65.2 points per game. At the time, Navy s 376 turnovers and 12.7 turnovers per game that season were the second-lowest in school history. Navy (9-21, 4-14) opened the season at 5-5 and went 4-0 in nonconference home games during the 2013-14 season. In his second season at Navy in 2012-13, the Midshipmen posted an 8-23 overall record, winning five more games than it did in his first year in Annapolis while playing one of America s youngest lineups, and showing fans what the future might hold for the Midshipmen. The story of the season was taking care of the ball and defense. Navy averaged just 11.3 turnovers per game, the fewest in school history by over two turnovers per game, while ranking 17th nationally. Navy also excelled on the defensive end of the floor, where Navy allowed just 60.9 points per game, the third-lowest total in school history and the lowest for a Navy squad since 1962. The Mids ranked 42nd nationally in scoring defense, their lowest rank in over 30 years. The Midshipmen were competitive in almost every game during the 2011-12 season, losing 13 games by single digits or in overtime, including five by three points or less. The Midshipmen closed out the campaign with a 3-26 record. DeChellis led Penn State to a 19-15 record and a fourth place finish (9-9) in the Big Ten in 2010-11, including the Nittany Lions first appearance in the Big Ten Championship Game and the school s first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2001. The Nittany Lions were led by senior guard Talor Battle, who finished second in the Big Ten in scoring (20.2 ppg) and became the first player in school history to be named team MVP all four years. Battle finished his career as Penn State s all-time leading scorer with 2,213 points, surpassing Jesse Arnelle s 56-year old Penn State record of 2,138, and finished 10th all-time in Big Ten history. DeChellis was the 2009 Big Ten Coach of the Year, just the second Penn State basketball coach to ever earn coach-of-theyear honors, as he guided a Nittany Lion team that started three sophomores to a school-record 27 wins and the program s firstever national tournament title in winning the 2009 NIT. Along the way Penn State tied a program record for regular season wins (21), posted its second-most Big Ten Conference wins (10) and second-best finish (4th) ever, recorded just the 10th 20-win season in program history, knocked off four Top 25 teams (including a road win at eventual NCAA runner-up Michigan State), set a record for home wins (17) and posted the program s most road wins (6) in the Big Ten era. Penn State s remarkable run was led by Battle, who was a firstteam All-Big Ten, NABC and USBWA all-region selection and NIT MVP Jamelle Cornley, who finished his career ranked fourth all-time in scoring and rebounding at Penn State. Neither player was a highly sought blue-chip recruit, but found remarkable success and achievement under the tutelage of DeChellis and his staff. His coaching performance in 2007-08 had many of his Big Ten colleagues and members of the media pointing to him as the conference s coach-of-the-year. Primed for a run to the postseason in his fifth year at the helm, DeChellis saw his leading scorer, rebounder and preseason All-Big Ten first-team pick Geary
