NUsports.com Opponent profile Western Kentucky Hilltoppers Location: Bowling Green, Ky. 2010-11 Record: 15-17 Series History: 3-2, Northwestern Last meeting: Northwestern, 61-54, Nov. 18, 2010 One thing you need to know about Western Kentucky: The Hilltoppers dropped their season opener to Towson, 67-62, at home. Keisha Mosley recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. The Last Time These Two Teams Met... Brittany Orban scored a team-high 20 points, and was a perfect 11-of-11 from the free-throw line and Amy Jaeschke turned in 13 points in just 18 minutes as the Wildcats gritted out a 61-54 victory at Western Kentucky. Senior Beth Marshall added 11 points and a team-high four assists in the win. Wildcats Open 2011-12 With W at CMU Northwestern gained momentum in the last three minutes of the first half, and maintained that intensity the rest of the game, emerging with a 69-60 victory at Central Michigan Friday to open the 2011-12 season. Four Wildcats reached double figures, led by junior Kendall Hackney who scored 18 points, 11 of which came in the second half. Northwestern s freshmen turned in two outstanding efforts, as Karly Roser flirted with a double-double, turning in 10 points, nine assists and five steals. Fellow classmate Morgan Jones recorded 12 points, seven rebounds and two snatches. Roser Dishing The Rock Freshman Karly Roser s eight assists against Central Michigan placed her atop the Big Ten s assist column after the first week of play. The assist total was just one piece in her outstanding line, which included 10 points, five steals and four rebounds. McKeown Announces 2012 Class Head coach Joe McKeown announced the signing of three players to National Letters of Intent. This year s class features Tennessee native Lauren Douglas (Collienville, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian), Atlanta native Christen Johnson (Powder Springs, Ga.) and local product Maggie Lyon (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier). For more information on the signees, please see the sidebar on the next page. Oh Captain, My Captain Seniors Brittany Orban and Allison Mocchi are this year s team captains. It is the second year in a row Mocchi has been named captain and the first such nod for Orban. Taking Inventory The Wildcats lost three starters from last year s squad, including All-American center Amy Jaeschke and fifth-year senior point guard and All-Big Ten selection, Beth Marshall. While NU lost a significant amount of offense with their departure, the Wildcats feature a bevy of veterans who can contribute in multiple ways. Returning is All-Big honoree Kendall Hackney finished second on the team in scoring last season, as well as senior captain Allison Mocchi and forward Dannielle Diamant. Brittany Orban has been a mainsty in the Wildcats lineup for the past three years, starting nearly every game of her career, and brings not only experience but toughness. Young Cats Three new faces grace the hardwood for the Wildcats, in Morgan Jones, Karly Roser and Alex Cohen, a class that is arguably the strongest group to come to Evanston under McKeown s tenure. The group was ranked 14th by ESPN s Hoopgurlz. Against Central Michigan Friday, the trio accounted for 25 points, nine assists and 12 rebounds. Welcome, Ms. Jones When junior Tailor Jones looks to make a slick pass this year, she will have an all-too-familiar face to dish to. Her sister, Morgan, is a member of the oustanding freshman class and was ranked ninth in the nation and third at her position by Hoopgurlz. Cats Cruise Past Lewis In Exhibition Action Northwestern held Lewis to just one bucket through the opening eight minutes and poured in 50 first-half points en route to a 83-61 exhibition victory at Welsh-Ryan Arena last Sunday afternoon. Senior Brittany Orban and freshman Morgan Jones led the Wildcats with 16 points each, while juniors Kendall Hackney and Dannielle Diamant added 12 apiece. Another Year Older... McKeown has coached at only three schools during that time (New Mexico State, George Washington and Northwestern). For more information on McKeown, please see his bio page. JOE McKEOWN 26th season overall Fourth at Northwestern Overall record: 554-226 On June 9, 2008, Northwestern University Director of Athletics and Recreation Jim Phillips named Joe McKeown the head women s basketball coach at Northwestern. McKeown (pronounced Mick-Q-ann) is the sixth mentor to guide Northwestern s women s basketball program. In just his first three seasons in Evanston, McKeown has transformed the culture of the women s basketball program. The Wildcats enter the 2011-12 campaign following the best back-toback seasons in nearly 15 years. Combined, the 2009-10 and 2010-11 campaigns yielded 37 victories, two postseason appearances and milestone wins over nationally-renown Ohio State, LSU and DePaul. On the individual level, 2010-11 marked the first time a Wildcat was selected in the WNBA draft as Amy Jaeschke was selected as the 27th pick overall by the Chicago Sky. Jaeschke turned in not only one of the best seasons in Wildcat annals, but also one of the most storied careers. In the Northwestern record books, she finished her career ranked first in blocks and second in scoring and in rebounding. Jaeschke also was tabbed an Associated Press honorable mention All-American, marking the first time since 1998 that a Wildcat appeared on the prestigious list. Northwestern s improvement from 2008-09 (7-23) to 2009-10 (18-15) was tied for the 10th best turnaround in the nation and ranked fourth among BCS schools. In winning percentage comparison, the Wildcats above-.500 mark (.545) was a 31.2 percent improvement from last season. The success yielded NU s first postseason appearance in 13 years and a ticket to the WNIT, which led to two victories and a trip to the event s round of 16. McKeown joined the Wildcats following 19 years as the head coach at George Washington University, where he became one of the most respected names in women s college basketball. During the 2007-08 season, McKeown became the 34th head coach in Division I history to pass the 500-victory mark. He brought 509 career victories, a total which ranked 21st on the active Division I list, to Evanston. Entering the 2011-12 campaign, McKeown s.710 winning percentage (553-226) ranks 23rd all-time among active coaches (minimum five years) and his 553 career victories is tied for 36th among active coaches (minimun five years). He also is tied for 19th in the 20-plus win seasons category (minimum 10 years as head coach). McKeown left George Washington as the winningest coach in school history and in the Atlantic 10 Conference. In 24 seasons as a college head coach, McKeown has guided his team to postseason play 20 times. He coached the Colonials to 14 regular season or postseason Atlantic 10 crowns. In his 19 seasons at George Washington, McKeown compiled a 441-154 record, with his 1997 squad reaching the Elite Eight. On three other occasions, the Colonials advanced to the Sweet Sixteen 1995, 2007 and 2008. In his 15 NCAA Tournament trips with GW, the Colonials won their first-round tournament game 13 times. McKeown is a five-time Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year (1991, 1997, 2000, 2002, 2007) and two-time National Coach of the Year nominee (1995, 1997). After spending three seasons as the head coach at New Mexico State, where he went 68-20 and appeared in two NCAA tournaments, Born May 12 Alma Mater Kent State, 1979 Degrees Bachelor s Degree, 1979 (Kent State) Master s Degree, 1981 (Kent State) Playing Experience Kent State, Guard, 1977-79 Coaching Experience Kent State, 1979-1983 Graduate Assistant Oklahoma, 1983-1986 Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator New Mexico State 1986-1989 Head Coach George Washington, 1989-2008 Head Coach Northwestern, 2008-present Head Coach Family McKeown At-A-Glance Wife Laura Daughters Meghan (20), Ally (9) Son Joey (17) McKeown went to George Washington in September of 1989, inheriting a team that went 9-19 a year earlier. After his first squad went 14-14, McKeown quickly turned the Colonials into an elite women s college program with his teams averaging nearly 24 wins per year the next 18 seasons. At GW, McKeown coached six Atlantic 10 Players of the Year. He also has mentored seven A-10 Rookies of the Year, five Defensive Players of the Year, five Sixth Players of the Year, 14 All-Rookie Team selections and 51 all-conference performers. McKeown has coached 16 players who have gone on to play professional basketball (four WNBA draft picks). Equally as impressive as GW s success on the court was its outstanding performance in the classroom. During McKeown s tenure with the Colonials, George Washington players received Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference recognition 17 times and eight players were named CoSIDA academic all-district selections (three Academic All-Americans). Of those eight, one was a Rhodes Scholar nominee and another received a Fulbright Scholarship. Other former studentathletes under McKeown s guidance include a GW School of Business Distinguished Scholar Award, an NCAA Woman of the Year representative and two Atlantic 10 Student-Athletes of the Year. McKeown also is involved with USA Basketball, as he recently was named an assistant coach for the 2008 USA Basketball Women s U-18 National Basketball Team. He was also a floor coach for the 1992 Olympic team. Prior to coaching at New Mexico State, McKeown served as an assistant coach at the University of Oklahoma from 1983-86, and at his alma mater, Kent State University, from 1979-80. Oklahoma posted at least 20 wins in each of McKeown s three years on the coaching staff. As a player, McKeown earned Junior College National Small Player of the Year honors at Mercer College in Trenton, N.J. He helped the team to a 33-1 record and a spot in the NJCAA championship 10 Western_Kentucky_Notes_PRINT.indd 10 11/14/11 1:56:49 PM
