MSU and UM play at Mariucci Arena (10,000) Friday (7:07 p.m.) and Saturday (7:07 p.m.) CST. About the MSU-UM Series: MSU has gone 6-4-0 in the last ten meetings with Minnesota and owns a 9-32-6 all-time record in the series vs. the Golden Gophers. The series dates back to the start of the 1997-98 season. MSU Most Recently: Minnesota State split a pair of Western Collegiate Association home games to Bowling Green last weekend, falling 4-3 to the Falcons before rebounding to claim a 1-0 overtime win in the second contest. About the Golden Gophers: Top-rated Minnesota is coming off a weekend in which it split a nonconference road series at Notre Dame (4-1 loss, 5-4 win). 2013-14 Minnesota State University Men s Hockey - Page Two Johnny McInnis Notes: Senior forward Johnny McInnis, MSU s team captain, scored his third goal in as many games when he tallied in overtime to lift the Mavericks past Bowling Green last Saturday. The goal is his ninth career game-winning goal, which stands tied for eighth all-time at MSU. McInnis, who has 25-22--46 in his four seasons with the Mavericks, is the program s active career leader in terms of games played with 100. The Boston, Mass., native leads the Mavericks with 31 shots on goal and he s tied for the team lead in assists (3) and leads the Mavericks in points (6). Josh Nelson Notes: Senior defenseman Josh Nelson, an alternate captain for Minnesota State, has 6-16--22 in 87 career games. Chase Grant Notes: Junior forward Chase Grant, who saw action in all 41 games in 2012-13, has 16-26--42 in 87 career games. The Oklahoma City, Okla., native tied for third in last year s team with four gamewinning goals. Max Gaede Notes: Junior forward Max Gaede has played in 79 straight games (last 30 games of his freshman season, all 41 games in 2012-13 and eight in 2013-14). Gaede, a third-round NHL draft selection Minnesota State Head Coach Mike Hastings Named the head coach of the men s hockey program in April of 2012, Mike Hastings owned an outstanding debut season with Minnesota State in 2012-13. In his first year as head coach of the Mavericks, Hastings was named WCHA Coach of the Year after leading MSU to a school all-time NCAA Division I-high 24 wins. The Crookston, Minn., native guided MSU to its first top-half league finish since 2007-08 and the Mavericks made their second-ever NCAA postseason tournament appearance. MSU achieved an all-time program best national ranking of #7 in the country Feb. 25, had a seven-game winning streak from Nov 23-Dec. 14 and during the course of the season, claimed wins over #2 Minnesota, #4 North Dakota and #15 Wisconsin. Under his guidance, the Mavericks had an all-time program-best 16 wins versus WCHA opponents. Hastings was named national coach of the year by College Hockey News Mike Hastings March 27th and was a finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award as the AHCA National Coach of the Year. Hastings, who became the third coach in the history of the Maverick men s hockey program, arrived at MSU following a three-year stint as the associate head coach at Nebraska-Omaha. He also served as an assistant coach with the men s hockey program at the University of Minnesota for one season and before that had a 14-year run as head coach of Omaha of the United States Hockey League. The USHL s all-time winningest coach, Hastings compiled a 529-210-56 record with the Lancers, never had a losing season and led Omaha to three Clark Cup titles as the USHL s play-off champions. He was named USHL Coach of the Year three times and as the team s general manager, earned league GM of the Year honors five times. Hastings, a native of Crookston, Minn., was an assistant coach for the U.S. national junior team at the 2003 and 2005 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships and served twice as head coach for the U.S. junior select team that competed in the Viking Cup, earning gold medal honors in 2000. Mat Knoll Notes: Sophomore defenseman Mat Knoll, who had 1-1--2 in 25 games in his inaugural season with MSU in 2011-12 and was named the team s co-most Improved Player, did not play in 2012-13, due to injury. Knoll returned to action in the series vs. UConn Oct. 18-19 and has seen action in five games in 2013-14 (0-0--0). Jean-Paul Lafontaine Notes: Junior forward Jean-Paul Lafontaine, who assisted on the overtime game-winning goal scored by Johnny McInnis last Saturday vs. Bowling Green, has 1-2--3 in eight games in 2013-14. Lafontaine has not missed a game in his three-year Minnesota State playing 2013-14 Western Collegiate Hockey Association Standings career and enters the Minnesota series with 87 consecutive games played. Lafontaine has 23-43--66 in 87 career games with the Mavericks. The Flint, Mich., native, who prepped at Shattuck-St. Mary s prior to joining MSU, is the nephew of National Hockey League Hall of Famer Pat Lafontaine (485-545-- 1013 in 865 games with New York Islanders, Buffalo and New York Rangers from 1983-98). Matt Leitner Notes: Junior forward Matt Leitner, who has led Minnesota State in scoring in his first two years with the program, has 0-3--3 this year in six games played. Leitner, who assisted on MSU s first goal in the 2-1 win over UConn Oct. 18 and added two more assists in a 6-1 win over the Huskies the next night, led the country in power play points as a sophomore with 28. Leitner has 79 career points on 28 goals and 51 assists to tie for 22nd on the school s DIera charts with Grant Stevenson (35-44-- 79 in 76 games from 2000-03. Next on the list, tied for 20th is Steven Johns (8-72--80 in 142 GP from 2001-05) and Joel Hanson (32-48--80 in 149 GP from 2004-08). Leitner was selected as the 2013-14 WCHA Pre-Season Player of the Year by media and the league coaches. Zach Palmquist Notes: Junior defenseman Zach Palmquist enters the Minnesota series with 0-2--2 in the last three games.
