Minnesota returns as the defending tournament champion from last year s inaugural event and looks to defend its title against the field of No. 1 Minnesota State, No. 7 Minnesota Duluth and Bemidji State. Minnesota Duluth and Bemidji State open this year s event at 4:05 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23 with Minnesota and Minnesota State following at 7:05 p.m. Both semifinals will be aired live on FOX Sports North PLUS. The consolation game is set for Saturday, Jan. 24 at 4:04 p.m. with the championship game following at 7:05 p.m. Both Saturday games will be aired live on FOX Sports North. Both Gopher games will also be streamed via BTN2Go with radio broadcasts on 1500 ESPN and the Gopher Radio Network. North Star College Cup Rewind Minnesota won the inaugural North Star College Cup last season in thrilling fashion after topping St. Cloud State 4-1 in the semifinal and then topping Minnesota Duluth in a shootout for the title (game officially went down as a 4-4 overtime tie). Adam Wilcox was named the inaugural North Star College Cup Most Valuable Player. New Protocol for Title Game While the first three games of the North Star College Cup will remain unchanged in overtime/shootout protocol (five-minute overtime session followed by a shootout), the championship game will move to the NCAA tournament format this year with 20-minute overtime periods occurring until a winner is decided. Putting the Puck on Net Minnesota s 50 shots on goal on Saturday were the most in a game by the Maroon & Gold this season and the most by the team since last year s NCAA tournament opener against Robert Morris on March 29, 2014 ( 7-3 win). The Gophers have tallied put 40 or more shots on goal in four of their last six games including the three-top single-game totals of the season LEADERS Bemidji State Overall WCHA Goals Connor Reilly 11 Assists Mike Reilly 19 Points Mike Reilly 23 Shots Mike Reilly 61 Shot % (min. 10 shots) C. Ambroz has scored on both of his shootout attempts this year including Friday against Wisconsin and has now successfully scored on three of his four shootout attempts -- the best success rate (.750) among Gophers and tied with Kyle Rau for the team shootout lead. Best in the Nation Minnesota s power-play units have combined for the top conversion rate in the nation so far this year at.266 (21-for-79). Mike Reilly (tied third, ) and Kyle Rau (tied fifth, ) both rank among the top 10 scorers in the nation while on the advantage. On Point From the Point As a sophomore last season, Mike Reilly earned First Team All-Big Ten honors, Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors and became Minnesota s first First Team All-American since The defenseman is once again among the elite defensemen in the nation -- his 1 assists rank first among all NCAA defensemen this year while his 23 points are second among the group. With three assists last Saturday Reilly tallied his 15th career multi-point game -- the Gophers are when he does so. Winner for Rau Twenty of senior captain Kyle Rau s 54 career goals have been game winners as Rau is the NCAA active leading scorer in game-winning goals. Rau is Minnesota s active leading scorer with 144 points (the most career points by a Gopher since Troy Riddle s 178 from ). Minnesota is now all-time when Rau tallies a point and when the forward tallies more than one point in a game. Wilcox Continues Iron Man Antics Adam Wilcox has appeared in 97 games since arriving on campus as a freshman while the All-American continues to make a name for himself in the Gopher Hockey history books. Wilcox s 10 career shutouts rank second all-time at Minnesota behind Kellen Briggs 13 while the junior s 62 career wins rank fifth in school history. Next up on the list is John Blue in fourth with 64 wins -- Briggs also holds the school wins record at 84. Wilcox leads the Big Ten this year in wins (11), shutouts (three) and goals against average (2.45). Seniors to Lead in All-American Kyle Rau will lead the Gophers as team captain in , making the senior the first player at the University of Minnesota to serve as captain for two-straight seasons since Grant Potulny in and Seniors Seth Ambroz and Ben Marshall will serve as alternate captains -- the 159th and 160th players to serve as either captain or alternate captain for the Gophers in a tradition that dates back to the program s first year of play in when Chet Bros led the Maroon & Gold. Lucia Record Watch Gopher Hockey coach Don Lucia is alltime as a head coach including at Minnesota. Only Doug Woog has more coaching wins behind the Gophers bench with 390. Lucia s 662 career wins rank him ninth all-time in college hockey and third among active Division I coaches while he will enter his 28th overall season as a head coach and 16th season with the Gophers in Iron Man in Net Over his two-plus seasons with the Gophers, Adam Wilcox has arguably put up two of the top seasons in net in program history. The South St. Paul, Minn., native set a new school GAA record of 1.88 in as a freshman, earning All-WCHA Third Team honors. Last year was even better for the netminder. Wilcox set a new school save percentage record of.932 and earned Second Team All-America accolades as well as being named Big Ten Player & Goaltender of the Year and First Team All-Big Ten. He also was named a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award -- Minnesota s first finalist since Ryan Potulny in Live and In Color Thirty regular-season Gopher Hockey games will be available on television during the across several networks. FOX Sports will lead the way in Gophers television coverage this season with 15 games while the Big Ten Network will broadcast 11 regular-season games featuring the Maroon & Gold over the course of the season. The ESPN network follows up with another four Gopher games. The entirety of the 2015 Big Ten Hockey Tournament will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network. And on the Radio with Wally and Frank Gopher Hockey will continue to call 1500 ESPN home for its radio broadcast after Minnesota and Learfield Sports Gopher Sports Properties announced a three-year agreement with the radio station this summer. Every regular-season game as well as the entire post-season will be broadcast on the 1500 ESPN radio waves through A First Time for Everything Now in its 94th year of collegiate competition, the University of Minnesota has seen almost everything. However, the team did have a couple firsts last year. A new era of Gopher Hockey started in as Minnesota joined the Big Ten Conference and went on to win the first-ever Big Ten game on Nov. 29, 2013 (4-1 win over Wisconsin) as well as the inaugural Big Ten regular-season championship. Additionally, the conference crown gave Minnesota its third-straight conference regular-season title -- another first for the Maroon & Gold.
