Game time on Feb. 3 at the Ralph Engelstad Arena is 7:37 p.m. and the game on Feb. 4 will begin at 7:07 p.m. FOLLOW THE HUSKIES THIS WEEKEND: Listen to the games this weekend on REV 96.7 FM ( with Jim Erickson and Dave Reichel on the call. UPCOMING EVENTS AT THE HBNHC: The SCSU men s hockey game on Feb. 10 has been designated as SCSU men s hockey alumni night. All former SCSU hockey players are invited to come out for this special evening at the HBNHC, which will include a salute to NCHA championship team from that was coached by Herb Brooks. The game on Feb. 10 has also been designated as Military and Veteran Appreciation Night at SCSU Hockey. All active military and veterans will be admitted free to the game that night along with a guest. Please call the hockey office at for more details. 2 MORE NEWS AND NOTES... LAST YEAR: The Huskies (31-9-1, NCHC) placed second in the NCHC s regular season standings last year. SCSU won the 2016 NCHC Frozen Faceoff title along with tourney titles at the 2015 UAA tournament and the 2016 North Star Cup. The Huskies were the top seed at the 2016 NCAA DI West Regional in St. Paul. POLL POSITION: SCSU received votes in the USCHO.com poll this week and received votes in the USA Hockey poll for this week...scsu was ranked #4 in the NCHC preseason media poll. A 1987 graduate of St. Cloud State, Motzko earned WCHA Coach of the Year notice in 2006 and The Huskies assistant coaches include Mike Gibbons, Garrett Raboin and volunteer goalie coach Mike Lee. THE NATIONAL: St. Cloud State University joined the National Collegiate Hockey Conference in The Huskies accepted the invitation to join The National in 2011, and they joined Colorado College, University of Denver, University of Minnesota Duluth, University of Nebraska Omaha, Miami University, University of North Dakota and Western Michigan as members of the new league this winter. The Huskies became an NCAA Division I affiliate in and they joined the WCHA in and were affiliated with the WCHA until MEET YOUR CAPTAINS: St. Cloud State senior Ben Storm, junior Nate Widman and sophomore Jimmy Schuldt will serve as as team captains in Storm and Schudlt will serve as team captains, while Widman serves as an alternate captain. ALL-AMERICANS: Senior defenseman Ethan Prow and junior goalie were both selected to the 2016 AHCA Division I First Team West All-America squad. SCSU players have now gained AHCA DI All-America honors 13 times since This marks the second time in team history that two players from SCSU have earned DI All-America First Team West status in the same season. 3 SCSU COACH BOB MOTZKO YEARS AT SCSU: 12th season CAREER RECORD: NCHC/WCHA CAREER RECORD: NCHC Coach of the Year 2014 WCHA Coach of the Year 2007 WCHA Coach of the Year 2006 The Motzko Story Bob Motzko is in his12th season at SCSU in The 2006 and 2007 WCHA Coach of the Year and 2014 NCHC Coach of the Year, Motzko has guided the Huskies to six WCHA Final Five appearances, a first place regular season finish in the NCHC in 2014, a first place finish at the 2016 NCHC Frozen Faceoff, a first place regular season finish in the WCHA in 2013, a NCAA Midwest Regional title in 2013 and a berth in the 2007, 2008, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 NCAA Division I tournaments. Motzko has charted an impressive overall record and has seen the Huskies ranked among the nation s top 20 teams for more than 156 weeks during his tenure at SCSU. In 2017, Motzko will serve as the head coach for Team USA at the IIHF World Junior Tournament. The Huskies have advanced to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff in 2015 and won the Frozen Faceoff in SCSU advance to the WCHA Final Five in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2013 and they reached the WCHA Final Five championship games twice during the Motzko era in 2010 and 2006 and the NCHC Frozen Faceoff title match in Motzko also guided the Huskies to their first-ever NCAA playoff victory with a 4-3 2OT win over Northern Michigan at the Western Regional in 2010 along with the 2013 Midwest Regional title with wins over Notre Dame (5-1) and Miami (4-1). Motzko guided SCSU to its firstever NCAA Frozen Four appearance in In 2014 and 2015, Motzko saw his Huskies advanced to the NCAA West Region title game. Motzko will serve as the head coach for Team USA at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championships and he served as an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championships in Malmo, Sweden. Individual honors have been many during the Motzko era at SCSU. In 2016, Ethan Prow was a Hobey Baker top 10 finalist. Prow and teammate Charlie Lindgren also gained AHCA All-America First Team West team honors in In 2014, Nic Dowd was named a Hobey Baker Award top three finalist and was an AHCA First Team All-American. In 2013, Drew LeBlanc became SCSU s first-ever Hobey Baker Award winner. LeBlanc and Nick Jensen both earned All-America First Team status in 2013, and Ryan Lasch was a Hobey Baker Award Top 10 finalist and an AHCA All-American in In 2007, Motzko saw SCSU standout Bobby Goepfert named a Hobey Baker Award top 10 finalist. SCSU freshman forward Andreas Nodl was named the 2007 HCA Division I Rookie of the Year and the 2007 WCHA Rookie of the Year. SCSU players have gained All-America honors six times during Motzko s tenure. A former SCSU hockey player and graduate of St. Cloud State, Motzko served as a men s hockey assistant coach at the University of Minnesota since He was part of two NCAA Division I national championship teams in 2002 and 2003, and helped the Gophers win WCHA playoff crowns in 2003 and His four recruiting classes at Minnesota were considered among the best in the nation, and Motzko helped produce one Hobey Baker Award winner, three first team All-Americans, two second team All-Americans and many All- WCHA honorees at Minnesota. A 1987 graduate of St. Cloud State University, Motzko was a two-year varsity letterwinner for the SCSU hockey team from Motzko began his coaching career in as an assistant coach for the legendary Herb Brooks at SCSU - and also worked with former SCSU head coach Craig Dahl. Motzko went on to serve as general manager and head coach of the USHL s North Iowa Huskies from 1987 through In 1989, Motzko led the North Iowa squad to a United State Junior A national championship and was named that year s USHL Coach of the Year. In 1991, Motzko was named associate head coach at Miami University (Ohio), where he helped lead the RedHawks to a Central Collegiate Hockey Association title and an NCAA tournament berth in He served for one season as an associate head coach at the University of Denver from , before returning to Miami University in Motzko was named general manager and head coach of the USHL s Sioux Falls Stampede in He led the Stampede to a record in the team s first two seasons in the USHL, and in 2000, Motzko was named the USHL General Manager of the Year. A native of Austin, Minn., Motzko and his wife Shelley are the parents of three children. They currently reside in St. Cloud, Minn. 4 MORE NEWS AND NOTES... LAST WEEK: In the final North Star College Cup tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, the St. Cloud State University Huskies finished as runner-up. SCSU opened the weekend with a 2-1 win over WCHA rival Bemidji State on Jan. 27. Jacob Benson scored a power play goal in the first period with assists from Blake Winiecki and Jack Ahcan. In the second stanza, Winiecki added the game winner at 7:16 with helpers from Nick Poehling and Mikey Eyssimont. BSU added their goal later in the second to make the final 2-1. Jeff Smith made 26 saves in the game as BSU outshot the Huskies in the game...on Jan. 28, SCSU took #1 Minnesota Duluth to the limit before losing a 2-1 decision in OT. Will Borgen scored in the first period to give SCSU a 1-0 lead in the game, which they held until :42 of the third period when UMD s Alex Iafallo scored to tie the game at 1-1. In the OT session, UMD s Kyle Osterberg scored the GWG at 6:00. In the game, UMD outshot the Huskies as Smith made 32 saves in the loss for SCSU. TOUGH SCHEDULE: The Huskies have faced a series of top opponents over the past few weeks. To start the run, SCSU split a weekend series against then #2/3 ranked Minnesota Duluth. The following weekend, SCSU split another series back at the HBNHC against then #1/2 ranked Denver. The run continued last weekend in St. Paul with games against #20 ranked Bemidji State and #2/3 ranked UMD at the North Star Cup. This week, SCSU will face #12/13 ranked North Dakota. SCSU is 3-3 in the last six games against these tough foes. Of note, SCSU s strength of schedule ranking according to the RPI is third in the nation behind #1 UMD and #2 Denver. North Dakota is ranked #4 for SOS and Western Michigan is #5. The list continues with #6 ranked Colorado College, #7 Miami and #8 Omaha. I guess that pretty much covers the NCHC. 100th GAME: Junior Judd Peterson played in his 100th career game at SCSU on Jan. 27. He now has 29 goals and 14 assists in 101 games played at SCSU. This season, Peterson has nine goals and four assists. He is a draft pick of the Buffalo Sabres. BACK HOME: Grand Forks residents Jon Lizotte, a sophomore defender, and Jacob Benson, a sophomore forward, will be enjoying a homecoming of sorts during the Huskies trip to UND on Feb Lizotte played junior hockey at Minot (NAHL) and Benson played at Dubuque (USHL). Lizotte (2013) and Benson (2014) both graduated from Red River H.S. in Grand Forks, N.D. Benson has 7g/7a this season for the Huskies and Lizotte has 1g/3a from the blueline. TEAM LEADERS:- Mikey Eyssimont had one assist this past weekend to maintain his point scoring lead at 23 (10g/13a). Blake Winiecki assumed the team s goal scoring lead with his solo goal vs. BSU on Jan. 27. He now has 11 goals this season to top SCSU s charts. Ironically, Winiecki has 11 goals and 11 assists this season and he has 28 goals and 28 assists in his career with the Huskies. Patrick Newell leads SCSU with 16 assists this year. THE NOTEBOOK: SCSU goalie Jeff Smith has started the last 11 games for the Huskies. He owns a record this season with a 2.69 GAA and a.908 save rate...scsu continues to move up on the power play charts and the Huskies now rank 15th in the nation with a power play rate of 20.2 this season...scsu s Jack Ahcan ranks 14th in the nation for DI freshmen at 0.82 points per game...ahcan also ranks 13th in the nation for DI defenseman with a scoring rate of 0.82 points per game...will Borgen now has two goals to his credit this season (and three in his career)...borgen also leads SCSU with a +/- ranking of +5...Mikey Eyssimont leads SCSU with 101 shots on goal this season...on defense, Jimmy Schuldt had a team-high 61 blocked shots this winter. NICE GUYS: SCSU is the least penalized team in the nation at present. The Huskies top DI with a low average of 9.2 penalty minutes per game. SCSU has amassed just 238 penalty minutes this season in 26 games played. NEXT UP: SCSU is back home on Feb for games at the HBNHC against Miami University.
