Cloud State was picked as the #2 team in the preseason NCHC poll. Of note, the Huskies received votes in the final USCHO.com poll of Minnesota is ranked #10 in both polls this week. HOCKEY DAY MINNESOTA: The city of St. Cloud will host the 2018 Hockey Day Minnesota on Jan. 20. This day celebrates the sport of hockey in the state of Minnesota and it will include a weekend of fun activities in St. Cloud. On Jan. 19, the SCSU Men s and Women s Hockey Alumni teams will be playing a game on the outdoor rink, which will be set up at Eastman Park on the shores of Lake George in St. Cloud. On Jan. 20, the SCSU women s hockey team will play UMD at the outdoor rink at 1 p.m., while the SCSU-Minnesota State game at 5 p.m. will be played back at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center and featured on Fox Sports North Plus. The day will also include high school games at the outdoor rink along with a concert and fan activities. A 1987 graduate of St. Cloud State, Motzko earned WCHA Coach of the Year notice in 2006 and The Huskies assistant coaches include Mike Gibbons, Garrett Raboin and volunteer goalie coach Mike Lee. THE NATIONAL: St. Cloud State University joined the National Collegiate Hockey Conference in The Huskies accepted the invitation to join The National in 2011, and they joined Colorado College, University of Denver, University of Minnesota Duluth, University of Nebraska Omaha, Miami University, University of North Dakota and Western Michigan as members of the new league this winter. 3 SCSU COACH BOB MOTZKO YEARS AT SCSU: 13th season CAREER RECORD: NCHC/WCHA CAREER RECORD: NCHC Coach of the Year 2014 WCHA Coach of the Year 2007 WCHA Coach of the Year 2006 The Motzko Story Bob Motzko is in his13th season at SCSU in The 2006 and 2007 WCHA Coach of the Year and 2014 NCHC Coach of the Year, Motzko has guided the Huskies to six WCHA Final Five appearances, a first place regular season finish in the NCHC in 2014, a first place finish at the 2016 NCHC Frozen Faceoff, a first place regular season finish in the WCHA in 2013, a NCAA Midwest Regional title in 2013 and a berth in the 2007, 2008, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 NCAA Division I tournaments. Motzko has charted an impressive overall record. In 2017, Motzko served as the head coach for Team USA at the IIHF World Junior Tournament and helped Team USA win the gold medal. He will serve again as Team USA s head coach at the IIHF World Junior Championships in Of note, Motzko also served as an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championships in Malmo, Sweden. The Huskies have advanced to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff in 2015 and won the Frozen Faceoff in SCSU advance to the WCHA Final Five in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2013 and they reached the WCHA Final Five championship games twice during the Motzko era in 2010 and 2006 and the NCHC Frozen Faceoff title match in Motzko also guided the Huskies to their first-ever NCAA playoff victory with a 4-3 2OT win over Northern Michigan at the Western Regional in 2010 along with the 2013 Midwest Regional title with wins over Notre Dame (5-1) and Miami (4-1). Motzko guided SCSU to its firstever NCAA Frozen Four appearance in In 2014 and 2015, Motzko saw his Huskies advanced to the NCAA West Region title game. Individual honors have been many during the Motzko era at SCSU. In 2016, Ethan Prow was a Hobey Baker top 10 finalist. Prow and teammate Charlie Lindgren also gained AHCA All-America First Team West team honors in In 2014, Nic Dowd was named a Hobey Baker Award top three finalist and was an AHCA First Team All-American. In 2013, Drew LeBlanc became SCSU s first-ever Hobey Baker Award winner. LeBlanc and Nick Jensen both earned All-America First Team status in 2013, and Ryan Lasch was a Hobey Baker Award Top 10 finalist and an AHCA All-American in In 2007, Motzko saw SCSU standout Bobby Goepfert named a Hobey Baker Award top 10 finalist. SCSU freshman forward Andreas Nodl was named the 2007 HCA Division I Rookie of the Year and the 2007 WCHA Rookie of the Year. SCSU players have gained All-America honors six times during Motzko s tenure. A former SCSU hockey player and graduate of St. Cloud State, Motzko served as a men s hockey assistant coach at the University of Minnesota since He was part of two NCAA Division I national championship teams in 2002 and 2003, and helped the Gophers win WCHA playoff crowns in 2003 and His four recruiting classes at Minnesota were considered among the best in the nation, and Motzko helped produce one Hobey Baker Award winner, three first team All-Americans, two second team All-Americans and many All- WCHA honorees at Minnesota. A 1987 graduate of St. Cloud State University, Motzko was a two-year varsity letterwinner for the SCSU hockey team from Motzko began his coaching career in as an assistant coach for the legendary Herb Brooks at SCSU - and also worked with former SCSU head coach Craig Dahl. Motzko went on to serve as general manager and head coach of the USHL s North Iowa Huskies from 1987 through In 1989, Motzko led the North Iowa squad to a United State Junior A national championship and was named that year s USHL Coach of the Year. In 1991, Motzko was named associate head coach at Miami University (Ohio), where he helped lead the RedHawks to a Central Collegiate Hockey Association title and an NCAA tournament berth in He served for one season as an associate head coach at the University of Denver from , before returning to Miami University in Motzko was named general manager and head coach of the USHL s Sioux Falls Stampede in He led the Stampede to a record in the team s first two seasons in the USHL, and in 2000, Motzko was named the USHL General Manager of the Year. A native of Austin, Minn., Motzko and his wife Shelley are the parents of three children. They currently reside in St. Cloud, Minn. USA, USA: SCSU head coach Bob Motzko and Director of Hockey Operations/Video Coordinator Matt Chapman are currently working with Team USA at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championships in Buffalo, N.Y. Motzko will once again serve as head coach for Team USA at the World Juniors and Chapman will serve as the team s video coach. SCSU sophomore forward Ryan Poehling is also on Team USA in On the topic of the World Juniors, SCSU freshman goalie David Hrenak is on the roster for the Slovakia National Junior Team, which competed at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championships in Buffalo, N.Y. Team USA will play in the semi s against Team Sweden with hopes of advancing to the title game on Jan. 5. Motzko, Chapman and current SCSU defenseman Jack Ahcan were part of the Team USA squad that won gold at the World Junior Championships in Will Borgen OLYMPIC DREAMS: The USA men s hockey team will feature two SCSU Huskies at the Winter Olympic Games in Current SCSU blueliner Will Borgen has been selected to the team along with former Husky forward Garrett Roe. Borgen and Roe will join a list of 15 Huskies who have competed in the Olympics. Other former SCSU hockey players to play for Team USA include Bret Hedican (1992 and 2006), Ryan Malone (2010), Mark Parrish (2006), Matt Cullen (2006) and Andreas Nodl (2014). Of note, former Husky hockey player Rikard Gronberg will serve as head coach for Team Sweden at the 2018 Winter Games. Roe played for SCSU from and ranks first in the team records with 113 assists and third with 178 points (65g/113a). He is currently playing professional hockey in Switzerland this winter. Borgen has 1g/7a for the Huskies this season. OUT EAST: The Huskies returned from their east coast trip to with a pair of ties at Princeton. SCSU skated to a 3-3 OT decision on Dec. 29 and repeated with a 2-2 OT game on Dec. 30 at Princeton. SCSU now owns an 8-game unbeaten streak headed into the weekend series against Minnesota. Jimmy Schuldt paced SCSU on the trip with one goal and two assists, while Jacob Benson and Blake Winiecki each had one goal and one assist in the series. In the 3-3 tie on Dec. 29, the Huskies outshot the Tigers 30-6 in the third and OT period combined. TOP DOGS: Defenseman and post-season honors candidate Jimmy Schuldt leads the Huskies with 16 assists and 22 points. He also owns an impressive +21 rating on the plus/ minus this season at the SCSU...Overall, the Huskies have enjoyed a talent rich team in A total of seven SCSU players have charted 10 or more points this season and eight have scored five or more goals this season...junior Robby Jackson has scored seven goals this season to lead the Huskies, while Mikey Eyssimont, Jack Poehling, Easton Brodzinski, Jacob Benson and Jimmy Schuldt rank second on the team with six goals apiece. IMPRESSIVE NUMBERS: SCSU is second in the nation in scoring this season with an average of 4.06 goals per game. Of note, Minnesota ranks 40th in the nation at 2.73 goals per game...on defense, SCSU ranks fifth in the nation at 2.12 goals allowed per game. SCSU also ranks second with the nation s best scoring margin at 1.94 this season... On special teams, SCSU ranks fourth in the nation on the power play at 25.9 percent (21/81) and 21st on the penalty kill at 82.9 percent (58/70). IMPRESSIVE NUMBERS II: Jimmy Schuldt paces all NCAA DI blueliners this season with a scoring average of 1.29 ppg. He ranks fourth in the nation among all DI players with.94 assists per game (16)...Rookie netminder David Hrenak currently ranks third in the nation with a save percentage of.947 (198 saves), while junior goalie Jeff Smith ranks fifth in the nation with a.928 save rate (310 saves )..SCSU goalie tandem also ranks high in the goals against category this winter. Motzko and Chapman have been selected to serve once again with Team USA at the World Juniors in Ryan Poehling was selected to the Team USA roster, while David Hrenak was on the roster for Team Slovakia at the World Juniors this season. Huskies at the Winter Olympics: Will Borgen and former Husky Garrett Roe have both been selected to the Team USA for the upcoming 2018 Winter Olympic Games in South Korea. They become the sixth and seventh former SCSU hockey players to compete in the Olympics. The other SCSU Olympians include Bret Hedican (1992 and 2006), Mark Parrish (2006), Matt Cullen (2006), Ryan Malone (2010) and Andreas Nordl ( Team Austria). Former SCSU coach Herb Brooks led Team USA at the 1980 Winter Games along with the 2002 games and he was Team France s coach at the 1998 games.
