Call SCSUTIX or SCSU Men s Hockey Release: 2013 NCAA DI Midwest Regional March 30 - SCSU vs. Notre Dame March 31 - Championship Game NCAA TOURNAMENT TIME The #9/11 St. Cloud State University men s hockey team ( , WCHA) will be the #4 seed at the 2013 NCAA Division I Men s Hockey Midwest Regional on March The Regional will be played at the Huntington Center (8,000 cap./200x85). The Huskies will open play at 12:30 p.m. (CT) p.m. on Saturday, March 30 with a semifinal game against #1 seed Notre Dame ( ). In the other semifinal game, #2 seed Miami ( ) will play #3 seed Minnesota State ( ) at 4 p.m. (CT) in Toledo. The Regional will wrap up on Sunday, March 31 with a 3 p.m. (CT) championship game. The winner of the Midwest Regional will then advance to play in the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four on April 11 & 13 in Pittsburgh, Pa. 4 MORE NEWS AND NOTES... LAST YEAR: The Huskies ( , WCHA) placed sixth in the WCHA regular season standings. In first round play of the WCHA playoffs last year, the Huskies won two games in a series vs. UNO at the NHEC. At the WCHA Final Five in 2012, the Huskies lost to North Dakota by a 4-1 tally...scsu received votes in the final USCHO.com Division I national poll of the season. POLL POSITION: Here are this week s national rankings for the Huskies: USCHO.com - #9, USA Today/USAH Hockey - #11...SCSU earned a 4th place ranking in the WCHA preseason coaches poll and a sixth place ranking in the WCHA preseason media poll. A 1987 graduate of St. Cloud State, Motzko earned WCHA Coach of the Year notice in 2006 and The Huskies assistant coaches included five-year veteran Mike Gibbons, first-year coach Garrett Raboin and second-year volunteer goalie coach Dave Rogalski. Matt Chapman serves as the team s coordinator of hockey and video operations and Jeremiah Minkel is back once again as the team s equipment manager in THE NATIONAL: St. Cloud State University will join the National Collegiate Hockey Conference in The Huskies accepted the invitation to join The National in 2011, and they will join Colorado College, University of Denver, University of Minnesota Duluth, University of Nebraska Omaha, Miami University, University of North Dakota and Western Michigan as members of the new league. SCSU will remain as a member of the WCHA until the season. The Huskies became an NCAA Division I affiliate in and they joined the WCHA in MEET YOUR CAPTAINS: St. Cloud State seniors Ben Hanowski and Drew LeBlanc will return as team captains for the season. The pair also served as team captains during the campaign. SCSU junior defender Nick Jensen will serve as an alternate captain for the Huskies during the upcoming campaign. 5 SCSU COACH BOB MOTZKO YEARS AT SCSU: 8th season CAREER RECORD: WCHA CAREER RECORD: WCHA Coach of the Year 2007 WCHA Coach of the Year 2006 The Motzko Story Bob Motzko will begin season eight with the Huskies in The 2006 and 2007 WCHA Coach of the Year, Motzko has guided the Huskies to six WCHA Final Five appearances, a second place regular season finish in the WCHA in 2007 and a berth in the 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2013 NCAA Division I tournaments. Motzko has charted an impressive overall record and has seen the Huskies ranked among the nation s top 20 teams for more than 88 weeks during his tenure at SCSU. The Huskies have advanced to the WCHA Final Five in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2013 and they reached the WCHA Final Five championship games twice during the Motzko era in 2010 and Motzko also guided the Huskies to their first-ever NCAA playoff victory with a 4-3 2OT win over Northern Michigan at the Western Regional in SCSU s Ryan Lasch was a Hobey Baker Award Top 10 finalist and an AHCA All-American in In 2007, Motzko saw SCSU standout Bobby Goepfert named a Hobey Baker Award top 10 finalist. SCSU freshman forward Andreas Nodl was named the 2007 HCA Division I Rookie of the Year and the 2007 WCHA Rookie of the Year. SCSU players have gained All-America honors three-times during Motzko s tenure. A former SCSU hockey player and graduate of St. Cloud State, Motzko served as a men s hockey assistant coach at the University of Minnesota since He was part of two NCAA Division I national championship teams in 2002 and 2003, and helped the Gophers win WCHA playoff crowns in 2003 and His four recruiting classes at Minnesota were considered among the best in the nation, and Motzko helped produce one Hobey Baker Award winner, three first team All-Americans, two second team All-Americans and many All- WCHA honorees at Minnesota. A 1987 graduate of St. Cloud State University, Motzko was a two-year varsity letterwinner for the SCSU hockey team from Motzko began his coaching career in as an assistant coach for the legendary Herb Brooks at SCSU - and also worked with former SCSU head coach Craig Dahl. Motzko went on to serve as general manager and head coach of the USHL s North Iowa Huskies from 1987 through In 1989, Motzko led the North Iowa squad to a United State Junior A national championship and was named that year s USHL Coach of the Year. In 1991, Motzko was named associate head coach at Miami University (Ohio), where he helped lead the RedHawks to a Central Collegiate Hockey Association title and an NCAA tournament berth in He served for one season as an associate head coach at the University of Denver from , before returning to Miami University in Motzko was named general manager and head coach of the USHL s Sioux Falls Stampede in He led the Stampede to a record in the team s first two seasons in the USHL, and in 2000, Motzko was named the USHL General Manager of the Year. A native of Austin, Minn., Motzko and his wife Shelley are the parents of three children. They currently reside in St. Cloud, Minn. NCAA ACTION: Here are some quick facts about the Huskies and the NCAA tournament: This is SCSU s ninth NCAA tournament bid since The Huskies have advances to the NCAA tournament in 1989, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2010 and SCSU is in games played vs. Notre Dame since The last meeting between SCSU and Notre Dame was a 4-1 and 4-3 OT sweep by the Irish on Oct , 1997 at the NHEC. This is the first time SCSU and ND have played in the postseason. SCSU is in NCAA tournament play. The Huskies picked up their first NCAA tournament win on March 26, 2010 with a 4-3 OT win in West Regional play against Northern Michigan at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. The Huskies went on to lose to Wisconsin by a 5-3 margin in the title game of the Regional that season. SCSU is in the all-time series vs. Miami and the Huskies are in play against Minnesota State at the DI Drew LeBlanc level. SCSU was one of six WCHA teams selected for tournament play this season. In SCSU s first trip to the NCAA tournament, the Huskies lost a 6-3 and 4-2 series at Lake Superior State. Other regional opponents for SCSU have included Boston University in 2000, Michigan in 2001, Michigan in 2002, New Hampshire in 2003, Maine in 2007, Clarkson in 2008, Northern Michigan in 2010 and Wisconsin in This marks the fourth time during Bob Motzko s tenure that the Huskies have gained an NCAA tournament bid. SCSU is the #4 seed at the Midwest Regional and the #13 seed overall in the tournament. THE FINAL FINAL FIVE: The Huskies ended their run in the WCHA with an appearance at the 2013 WCHA Final Five on March 22. SCSU was the tournament s number seed and it lost a 4-1 match against eventual FInal Five champion Wisconsin in the semi s on March 22 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. The Huskies lone goal in the contest was posted by senior Ben Hanowski on the power play. This was Hanowski s 16th goal of and it was his 61st goal as a Husky. He needs one more point to hit the 30-point plateau in He would become the sixth Husky this season to score 30-plus points this season... of note, this was the last time SCSU will appear in the WCHA Final Five. St. Cloud State, along with Miami University, will move to the NCHC in The Huskies joined the WCHA in and they earned their first WCHA regular season title in TOP 10 HOBEY CANDIDATE: St. Cloud State University senior Drew LeBlanc was named as a top 10 Hobey Baker Award finalist for He is the fourth SCSU player to be named as a Hobey Baker Award top 10 finalist. He currently leads the nation with 37 assists and is fifth in the nation with 50 points this season, which makes him the ninth player in team history to hit the 50-point plateau in a season at SCSU. LeBlanc leads the nation with 37 assists this winter and he currently ranks third in the country with 50 points. In his storied career, LeBlanc has 105 assists and 42 goals. He has played in a school record 167 games as a Husky and he ranks second in the team record with 105 assists and sixth with 147 points...leblanc is the first WCHA player to earn both the league s Player of the Year and Student-Athlete of the Year award in the same season. The last time a Husky earned the league s Player of the Year award was Mark Hartigan in 2002 and the last time a Husky was named Student-Athlete of the Year was Kyle McLaughlin in SCSU s other Hobey top 10 finalists were Mark Hartigan ( top 3), Bobby Goepfert (2007) and Ryan Lasch (2008). GREAT GOALIE: Sophomore goalie Ryan Faragher owns a record this season. Faragher needs three more wins this season to tie the team record of 25 goalie wins set by Scott Meyer in Faragher owns a 2.29 GAA and a.914 save rate this season. THE ROOKIES: Freshman forward Jonny Brodzinski leads all DI rookies in with 21 goals (along with leading SCSU in goals scored this winter)...scsu s freshmen class has been impressive this season with 50 goals and 57 assists. Among DI rookie scoring leaders this winter, Kalle Kossila ranks 12th with.86 points per game and Brodzinski ranks 14th with.82 ppg. WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS: SCSU claimed its first MacNaughton Cup title thanks to a 4-2 win at Wisconsin on Mar. 8 in a weekend series played at the old Dane County Coliseum...the victory provided the Huskies with an league record and 37 WCHA points. SCSU is the regular season co-champ this year along with Minnesota. This marked the 5th time since that the WCHA had co-champs and the first since CC and Denver shared the title in HUSKY NOTES AND NEWS: SCSU has eight players with 20-or-more points in Jonny Brodzinski leads the Huskies with an impressive +27 on the plus/minus...andrew Prochno and Nic Dowd pace the Huskies with 45 blocks this season...drew LeBlanc hit his 15th multi-point night of the season with his goal and two assists on March 16. LeBlanc has scored three-or-more points in a game four times in NCAA LEADERS: SCSU is the least penalized team in the country in The Huskies are averaging a low 8.5 penalty minutes per game in The Huskies rank fourth in the nation on offense with an average of 3.36 goals per game this season. SCSU has outscored its opponents this year. AWARD WINNER: Junior Nick Jensen was selected as the WCHA Defensive Player of the Year. He is the first SCSU player to gain Defensive Player of the Year notice. Jensen ranks second among DI defensemen with 26 assists this season. Of note, the SCSU record for most points by a defenseman was set by Bret Hedican in at 30 assists...in his career, Jensen has 85 points and 70 assists. Jensen ranks fourth in the team records for a blueliner with 85 points and second with 70 assists. WISE GUYS: The Huskies hit a new team-high by having 10 players selected as WCHA Sc holar-athletes for Hobey Baker candidate Drew LeBlanc became just the fifth player in league history to earn Scholar-Athlete honors for the fourth time.
