Following this weekend s games, all eight teams will only have three series (six games) left in the regular season. The Huskies can move into sole possession of first place in the NCHC this weekend as they sit only three points behind No. 2/2 Denver, which is idle this weekend. That may be tough for SCSU, however, as home teams are in conference play over the last three weekends (since Jan. 19). On the season, home teams are in conference play so far. Six NCHC teams are ranked in both the USCHO.com Poll and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll this week, with all six teams in the top 15 of both polls. The NCHC s six ranked teams in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll are double the number of any other conference. This is only the seventh week since the start of the season that an NCHC team has not been No. 1 in the USCHO Poll. Half of the NCHC teams have held the No. 1 spot during that span (SCSU, DU, UND and UMD), while only four other NCAA teams have total (Boston University, Penn State, Notre Dame and Cornell). (page 9) Three NCHC skaters are off to South Korea this week to play in the 2018 Winter Olympics. SCSU junior defenseman Will Borgen and Denver junior forward Troy Terry will both suit up for Team USA, while North Dakota sophomore forward Ludvig Hoff will play for his native Norway. The U.S. plays its first game Feb. 14 against Slovenia, while Norway opens play a day later against rival Sweden. Terry is just one point shy of joining the Century Club for his collegiate career (42g, 57a), but will have to wait until he returns, along with the others, for the regular-season finale March 2-3. This weekend s SCSU at Miami series features some of the top-scoring defensemen in the country as SCSU junior Jimmy Schuldt is first nationally averaging 1.04 points per game, while Miami senior Louie Belpedio is second at 1.00 ppg. RedHawks junior Grant Hutton leads all NCAA blue liners with both 10 goals and eight power play goals this year, while Belpedio is tied for second with nine total tallies on the season. Denver senior goaltender Tanner Jaillet tied the NCHC single-season shutouts record with his fifth whitewash of the season last Friday. He leads the NCHC and is tied for third nationally with his five shutouts this year, one off the national lead. He joins six previous NCHC netminders in logging five shutouts in a season: Denver s Sam Brittain ( ), Miami s Jay Williams ( ), UND s Cam Johnson, UMD s Kasimir Kaskisuo and SCSU s Charlie Lindgren ( ), and UMD s Hunter Miska ( ). Four of the top six scoring offenses in the country hail from the NCHC, led by SCSU s 3.81 goals per game average, which is second in the NCAA. Omaha, WMU and Denver rank fourth through sixth, respectively. Five of the top 10 power play units in the NCAA also call the NCHC home, led by Miami at 27.0 percent, which ties for second in the country. (pages #NCHCHockey TheNCHC NCHC.tv

The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation has also issued grants for the Penrose Cup, medallions for each individual champion and the NCHC s annual Post-Graduate Scholarship. Denver won its first Penrose Cup last season, while North Dakota won back-to-back Penrose Cups in 2015 and 2016 after St. Cloud State won the inaugural season. NCHC Tournament/Frozen Faceoff The NCHC Tournament will consist of four quarterfinal series on the first weekend following regular-season play (March 9-11, 2018). 17 Previous Week Round-Up FRIDAY, FEB. 2 After home teams went last weekend in NCHC play, the trend continued Friday with all three home teams picking up victories on their own ice. No. 4/5 Denver kept sole possession of first place in the conference with a 1-0 shutout of No. 9/10 Minnesota Duluth, as senior goaltender Tanner Jaillet logged his fifth whitewash of the season. No. 6/4 St. Cloud State remained right on the Pioneers heels, earning a 5-3 win over No. 13/13 Omaha to stay only three points back, despite a hat trick from Mavericks senior David Pope. Miami started to claw its way out of last place with a 4-2 win over rival No. 15 Western Michigan behind a big second period and two power play goals. In a goaltending duel, No. 4/5 Denver tallied the game s only goal early in the third period for a 1-0 win over No. 9/10 Minnesota Duluth Friday at Magness Arena. Senior goaltender Tanner Jaillet stopped all 24 shots he faced for his fifth shutout of the season, including second against UMD, also a 1-0 win, while it was his ninth career shutout. Sophomore forward Henrik Borgström scored the game s only goal 2:35 into the final frame from a tight angle. The Bulldogs ( , NCHC) tried to rally, outshooting Denver (15-6-6, /0 NCHC), 17-8 over the final 20 minutes, but UMD couldn t find the equalizer. Overall, the Pioneers finished with a slight, 26-24, edge in shots, including 18-7, over the first 40 minutes. Sophomore goalie Hunter Shepard made 25 saves in the loss for the Bulldogs. Looking to stay right behind Denver in the NCHC standings, No. 6/4 St. Cloud State was able to overcome a hat trick from Omaha senior David Pope to top the No. 13/13 Mavericks, 5-3, Friday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Pope put Omaha ( , NCHC) in front in the first period on the power play, but the Huskies (16-6-3, NCHC) rattled off three goals in the second period to take the lead, including two in the first 4:25 of the middle frame as senior forward Judd Peterson and sophomore forward Nick Poehing combined for both goals with a goal and an assist each. Another Pope power play marker tied the game and also set the NCHC single-season power play goals record with 12, but junior forward Mikey Eyssimont answered a minute later to put SCSU in front for good. Freshman forward Easton Brodzinski made it 4-2 early in the final frame with a power play goal of his own, which held up as the game-winner, despite Pope completing his first career hat trick midway through the third period. Senior defenseman Joel Messner assisted on all three Pope tallies. SCSU outshot Omaha, 42-18, in the victory, including 19-4 over the final 20 minutes. Junior goalie Evan Weninger stopped 37 shots for UNO in the loss. Snapping a five-game winless streak, Miami used a three-goal second period to down rival No. 15 Western Michigan, 4-2, Friday at Steve Cady Arena. After a scoreless first frame, the RedHawks ( , NCHC) struck twice in the first five minutes of the second stanza with goals from freshman forward Ben Lown and sophomore forward Gordie Green, the latter on the power play. Junior defenseman Corey Schueneman put the Broncos ( , NCHC) on the board midway through the middle period with a power play goal, but junior defenseman Grant Hutton answered for Miami with his own power play goal to make it 3-1 after 40 minutes. Senior blue liner Louie Belpedio, who also had an assist in the win, sealed the game with a tight-angle goal late in the third period. Miami outshot WMU, 28-22, in the win. SATURDAY, FEB. 3 The race for the Penrose Cup appears to be down to two teams as both No. 4/5 Denver and No. 6/4 St. Cloud State finished off weekend sweeps Saturday, extending their lead from the rest of the pack. The Pioneers twice erased one-goal deficits to edge No. 9/10 Minnesota Duluth, 4-3, at Magness Arena, completing a four-game regular-season sweep of the Bulldogs all one-goal games -- while maintaining a three-point lead in first place in the conference. Right behind DU is St. Cloud State, which scored the first and last three goals of the game in a 6-2 victory over No. 13/13 Omaha Saturday to also cap a four-game regular-season sweep of the Mavericks, while keeping a seven-point cushion on third-place Western Michigan. The 15thranked Broncos salvaged a weekend spilt at Miami, overcoming a two-goal deficit by scoring the final three goals, including two from freshman Ethen Frank, to pick up a 3-2 victory in Oxford and claim sole possession of third place in the NCHC with three series remaining in the regular season. Erasing a pair of one-goal deficits, No. 4/5 Denver rallied and then held on to edge No. 9/10 Minnesota Duluth, 4-3, Saturday at Magness Arena to keep sole possession of first place. With the win, the Pioneers (16-6-6, /0 NCHC) completed a regular-season sweep of the Bulldogs ( , NCHC) with all four wins coming by one goal. An unassisted short-handed goal put DU in front early in the first frame, but UMD scored two goals off the sticks of freshmen Scott Perunovich and Kobe Roth over the final 10 minutes of the opening period to take the lead into the first intermission. Denver took advantage of a turnover early in the second stanza to tie the game, but the Bulldogs again went up by a goal when sophomore forward Riley Tufte got behind the Pioneers blue line for his 13th goal of the year. In the closing minutes of the middle period, the Pioneers pulled even again when junior forward Jarid Lukosevicius banged in a rebound. Then midway through the final frame, classmate Dylan Gambrell poked in a bouncing puck in the crease for the game-winner and his second point of the night after setting up the tying goal. Denver finished with a edge in shots on goal. Senior Tanner Jaillet made 32 saves in the win for DU, while sophomore Hunter Shepard stopped 40 shots for UMD in defeat. Both teams are idle next weekend, with Denver finishing its Gold Pan series with Colorado College Feb while the Bulldogs host Miami in two weekends. Scoring the game s first and final three goals, No. 6/4 St. Cloud State remained firmly in second place behind Denver with a 6-2 win over No. 13/13 Omaha, completing a four-game regular-season sweep of the Mavericks Saturday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Junior forwards Robby Jackson, on the power play, and Mikey Eyssimont, who also had two assists for a three-point night, put the Huskies (17-6-3, NCHC) up 2-0 after 20 minutes. Freshman forward Blake Lizotte then made it 3-0 1:44 into the second stanza, before the Mavericks ( , NCHC) struck twice in a span of four minutes to close the deficit to one. Midway through the second period, however, sophomore forward Jake Wahlin restored a two-goal lead for SCSU while a bomb on the power play from junior Feb. 5-11, 2018 NCHCHockey.com NCHC.tv 17

18 Previous Week Round-Up defenseman Will Borgen, who is headed to the Olympics with Team USA, sealed the victory. The Huskies outshot Omaha, 41-26, and went 2-for-2 on the power play. St. Cloud State hits the road for two games at Miami next weekend, while the Mavericks are off next weekend before hosting No. 10/11 North Dakota Feb Rallying from a two-goal deficit, No. 15 Western Michigan scored the game s final three goals, all in the second period, to earn a 3-2 win over Miami Saturday at Steve Cady Arena, salvaging a weekend split. The RedHawks ( , NCHC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals from freshman forward Casey Gilling on the power play late in the first frame and sophomore forward Carter Johnson early in the second stanza, which was his first career goal. The Broncos ( , NCHC) stormed back, however, as freshman forward Ethen Frank tallied the first two goals to tie the game for his first career multi-goal game. Only 1:24 after Frank s second tally, sophomore forward Lawton Courtnall scored unassisted for the game-winner with less than three minutes left in the period. Miami tried to rally, outshooting WMU, 8-0, over the final 20 minutes, but despite not allowing a shot on goal, couldn t find the equalizer. The RedHawks finished with a edge in shots on goal, but sophomore goalie Ben Blacker made 26 saves to earn the win in net for the Broncos.
