THE SERIES: The home team swept both series between these teams last year and Miami holds a lead in the all-time series. PUCK POINTS Miami is when scoring three or more goals this season, but when netting two goals or fewer. The RedHawks are 8-5 on Friday nights this season, but have won just twice (2-8-3) on Saturdays. Miami s power play has scored at least one goal in six-straight games and has poured in two or more goals on 10 occasions this year. With 26 points (9g, 17a) in 26 games, Louie Belpedio is second nationally among defensemen with 1.00 points per game. His nine goals are also one shy of teammate Grant Hutton s national defense lead. He also just won his third NCHC Defenseman of the Week award of the season. Ryan Larkin has started 59 of the RedHawks 62 games in net since the start of last season. Junior forward Kiefer Sherwood just wrapped up a career-best eight-game point streak where he put up 13 of his 20 points on the season. Gordie Green has notched 43 points (18g, 25a) in his last 45 games dating back to last season. LAST TIME OUT Miami began a four-game homestand amidst a home heavy month of February against rival No. 15 Western Michigan. A three-goal second period on Friday propelled the RedHawks to a 4-2 victory. Louie Belpedio (1g, 1a), Josh Melnick (2a) and Kiefer Sherwood (2a) all recorded multiple points while Ryan Larkin made 20 saves in the winning effort. Saturday s finale saw Casey Gilling strike on the power play late in the first and Carter Johnson tip home his first collegiate goal to put the Red & White ahead 2-0 in the second period. However, WMU scored three-straight goals before the second intermission and withstood three MU power plays and an 8-0 shot barage in the third to force a weekend series split. 2 Miami vs. St. Cloud State Feb COACH BLASI Enrico Blasi (Miami 94) is in his 19th season behind the RedHawk bench. He is a five-time CCHA Coach of the Year and was named National Coach of the Year in He stands at his alma mater, where he has led Miami to 10 NCAA Tournaments, including two Frozen Four berths, a National Championship game appearance, a trio of CCHA regular-season titles and two conference tournament titles (2011 CCHA & 2015 NCHC). Blasi is the the winningest coach in school history. ABOUT ST. CLOUD STATE: The Huskies (17-6-3, NCHC) are coming off a home sweep of Omaha after outscoring the Mavericks SCSU enters the series on a three-game winning streak and is three points back of first-place Denver with two games in hand in the NCHC standings. Four St. Cloud skaters have put in at least 21 points this season with Robby Jackson ( ) pacing its second-ranked scoring offense (3.81 goals per game). Additionally, Jimmy Schuldt ( ) leads all NCHC blue liners in scoring and his 1.04 points per game is the best among all NCAA defensemen. Jeff Smith (2.51 GAA/.913 SV%) and David Hrenak (2.12 GAA/.922 SV%) have split the goaltending duties for the Huskies. POWERING THROUGH: The Miami power play has been a force all season long, ranking third in the country with a conversion rate of 27.0 percent. MU has scored a power play goal in 18 of its 26 contests, scoring at least twice on the power play on 10 occasions. The Red & White power play has been particularly dangerous of late, going 11-for-37 (29.7 percent) the last six games. TOUGH SLEDDING FROM HERE: Playing in the NCHC, high caliber competition is expected every weekend and the RedHawks final eight games are no exception. Looking at the PairWise entering this week, Miami s last four series come against teams above the NCAA Tournament cut line in St. Cloud State (No. 2), Minnesota Duluth (No. 11), North Dakota (No. 8) and Denver (No. 3). To this point, 16 of Miami s 26 games have come against USCHO.com Poll Feb. 5 (first-place votes in parentheses) LAST NO. TEAM RECORD PTS. 3 Miami vs. St. Cloud State Feb teams that are listed 13th or higher in the PairWise and MU has gone against those teams. In fact, the RedHawks only games against teams sitting lower than 24th in the PairWise was their Oct home series against UConn. PHIL KNIES THE HOCKEY GUY: Among Miami s productive freshmen, forward Phil Knies is beginning to separate himself with his skills. The Phoenix, Ariz., native became the RedHawks first player to earn NCHC Rookie of the Week when he tallied four goals and five points at Omaha in a Jan series. Knies has tallied at least one point in seven of his last 10 games, notching 10 (7g, 3a) in this stretch to grab the team s freshman scoring lead with 16 points (9g, 7a). ICE TILTING THE WRONG WAY: While Miami sat in the middle of the pack in terms of goals allowed the first half of the season, the trends have not been where it would like since December. Through the first two months, MU was the toughest team to generate shots against in the country, but it has struggled to control the puck consistently since. Oct.-Nov. Dec.-Present Record SOG/Game (35th) (56th) SOG Allowed/Game (1st) (33rd) Net SOG/Game (9th) (49th) Goals Against/Game 2.79 (t-26th) 4.00 (57th) MELNICK S CONSISTENCY: Junior forward Josh Melnick has been a consistent source of offense for the RedHawks this season. While he already ranks second on the team with 25 points (8g, 17a), what has been most notable this season is how he has avoided long scoring lulls. Melnick has not gone more than two games without recording a point this season, which has only happened twice and just once since opening weekend. BLUE LINE WITH A PUNCH: Miami has relied on its blue line to contribute offensively this season and they have come through to this point. The RedHawks defensemen have chipped in 21 goals this season, a total that s tied for third most nationally. The RedHawks have also gotten 69 points and 2.65 points per game (seventh nationally) from the blue line. POSSIBLE DIFFERENCE MAKERS: One area that could help the Red & White take another step forward this season is a return to form for forwards Kiefer Sherwood and Carson Meyer. The duo combined for 14 points and three multi-point games in the first half of the season. Last year, Sherwood finished second on the team with 38 points (seventh in the NCHC) and his 14 multi-point games tied for the conference lead while Meyer tallied 26 points in 32 games as a freshman to add another scoring threat. Sherwood appears to be regaining his sophomore form, posting a career-high eightgame point streak from Dec. 9-Feb. 2 with 13 of his 20 points this season coming over that stretch while Meyer awoke with a two-goal, three-point night at Colorado College on Jan. 27. CAPTAIN S CONTRIBUTIONS: Senior defenseman Louie Belpedio has been contributing at the offensive end of the ice on a consistent basis this season. After going scoreless in the opening series against Providence, the Skokie, Ill., native has recorded at least one point in 16 of 24 games and is second on the team with a careerhigh 26 points (9g, 17a). His 1.00 points per game is the second best total among all NCAA blue liners and his nine goals are one shy of Grant Hutton for the most in the country among defensemen. HUTTON FOR GOALS: Grant Hutton has turned his breakout sophomore campaign into even bigger gains as a junior. After finishing with just five assists in his freshman season, he poured in a defense-leading nine goals and 18 points last season Miami s Record When... 4 Miami vs. St. Cloud State Feb and leads the MU blue line 10 goals and is second with 20 points this season. Hutton has six multi-point games, eclipsing his total and his 10 goals are the most among NCAA defensemen. The junior is the first Miami blue liner since Dan Boyle (14 in ) to score at least 10 goals in a season. GOING GREEN: Sophomore forward Gordie Green has kept his midseason improvement from last year going into this season. The Ann Arbor, Mich., native leads Miami with 27 points (11g, 16a), which surpasses his freshman total of 21 last year. The sophomore posted a five-game point streak that ran from Oct. 20 through Nov. 3, during which he recorded four multi-point games. In his last 45 games dating back to last season, Green has 43 points on 18 goals and 25 assists. STARTS AT YOUR OWN END: Miami has been at its best when its played a stellar defensive game. When the RedHawks made eight-straight NCAA Tournament appearances from , their worst rank in scoring defense was 17th as they finished in the top 10 in defense seven times with six top-five performances, including two seasons as the nation s top defensive team. While joining the highly competitive NCHC has put the RedHawks up against more high-octane offenses, the fact remains that they have been at their best when keeping the puck out of their net consistently.
