THE SERIES: These teams split their series in Oxford back in November and Miami holds a all-time lead in the series. PUCK POINTS Miami is when scoring three or more goals this season, but when netting two goals or fewer. The RedHawks are 7-4 on Friday nights this season, but have won just twice (2-7-2) on Saturdays. Since Dec. 1, the RedHawks are allowing 4.12 goals per game (59th nationally) and are getting outshot by 9.12 shots per game (57th). Prior to that, MU was yielding 2.79 goals per game (t-26th) and outshooting foes by 5.64 per contest (ninth). With 20 points (8g, 12a) in 22 games, Louie Belpedio is sixth nationally among defensemen with 0.91 points per game. He and teammate Grant Hutton are also tied for the NCAA lead among blue liners with eight goals. Ryan Larkin has started 55 of the RedHawks 58 games in net since the start of last season. Junior forward Kiefer Sherwood is heating up, entering the weekend on a five-game point streak with six of his 13 points this season coming during this stretch. Gordie Green has notched 41 points (17g, 24a) in his last 41 games dating back to last season. LAST TIME OUT Two weeks ago, the RedHawks played their lone series for the regular season against Omaha, this coming on the road. Despite MU netting 10 goals on the weekend, UNO came away with a weekend sweep. Friday night saw MU drop a high-scoring 11-7 affair. After trailing 4-1 after 20 minutes, the RedHawks got back to within 4-3 midway through the second before falling behind 7-4 after two periods of play. Despite finding three more goals, Miami was unable to complete the comeback. The RedHawks then saw themselves down 4-0 after two periods on Saturday, but stormed back into it as Phil Knies scored two goals for the second-straight game amidst a furious comeback bid that saw the score get to within 4-3 with two and half minutes left. MU was unable to find the equalizer as it suffered its first NCHC series sweep of the season. 2 Miami at Colorado College Jan COACH BLASI Enrico Blasi (Miami 94) is in his 19th season behind the RedHawk bench. He is a five-time CCHA Coach of the Year and was named National Coach of the Year in He stands at his alma mater, where he has led Miami to 10 NCAA Tournaments, including two Frozen Four berths, a National Championship game appearance, a trio of CCHA regular-season titles and two conference tournament titles (2011 CCHA & 2015 NCHC). Blasi is the the winningest coach in school history. ABOUT COLORADO COLLEGE: The Tigers snapped a three-game losing streak and won their first NCHC game since Nov. 11 by toppling Western Michigan, 6-5 in overtime, to forge a series split last Saturday. That series featured two overtime games as CC moved into a tie for sixth in the NCHC standings at ( overall). Offensively, Nick Halloran ( ) and Mason Bergh ( ) are second and fourth, respectively, in the NCHC in scoring. Alex Leclerc has logged the bulk of the time in net and holds a 3.16 goals against average with a.906 save percentage. PHIL KNIES THE HOCKEY GUY: Among Miami s productive freshmen, forward Phil Knies is beginning to make a name for himself with his skills. The Phoenix, Ariz., native became the RedHawks first player to earn NCHC Rookie of the Week when he tallied four goals and five points at Omaha in a Jan series. Knies has tallied at least one point in five of his last six games, notching eight (5g, 3a) in this stretch to tie for the team s freshman scoring lead with 14 points (7g, 7a). GILLING A VITAL ROLE: Another strong debut season for Miami has come from Casey Gilling. The freshman is tied for the team s rookie lead in scoring with 14 points (6g, 8a) and is the RedHawks top faceoff guy, winning 58.1 percent of his faceoffs (22nd nationally). Half of those 14 points have come by way of a recent four-game point streak that ran from Dec. 9-Jan. 12. His top performance of the year was netting a pair of goals and an assist in a 4-3 win over defending national champion Denver on Jan. 5. 3 Miami at Colorado College Jan ICE TILTING THE WRONG WAY: While Miami has sat in the middle of the pack in terms of goals allowed much of the season, the trends have not been where it would like since December. Through the first two months, MU was the toughest team to generate shots against in the country, but it has struggled to control the puck consistently since. Oct.-Nov. Dec.-Jan. Record SOG/Game (35th) (56th) SOG Allowed/Game (1st) (47th) Net SOG/Game (9th) (57th) Goals Against/Game 2.79 (t-26th) 4.12 (59th) STARTING SLOWLY: One factor of Miami s shot margin swinging the other way has been its tendency to start slow with its possession game this month. During its current three-game losing skid, the Red and White have been outshot in the first period. Facing deficits of at least three goals each contest, MU has done an admirable job of getting back into contests, outshooting opponents in the third period and most notably pulling within 4-3 of Omaha on Jan. 13 after entering the third with a 4-0 deficit. MELNICK S CONSISTENCY: Junior forward Josh Melnick has been a consistent source of offense for the RedHawks this season. While he already ranks second on the team with 21 points (8g, 13a), what has been most notable this season is how he has avoided long scoring lulls. Melnick has not gone more than two games without recording a point this season, which has only happened twice and just once since opening weekend. The junior also ranks third on the team with five multi-point games. BLUE LINE WITH A PUNCH: Miami has relied on its blue line to contribute offensively this season and they have come through to this point. The RedHawks defensemen have chipped in 18 goals this season, a total that s tied for fifth most nationally. The RedHawks have also gotten 57 points from the blue line, which is tied 19th in the NCAA. POSSIBLE DIFFERENCE MAKERS: One area that could help the Red & White take another step forward this season is a return to form for forwards Kiefer Sherwood and Carson Meyer. The duo combined for 14 points and three multi-point games in the first half of the season. Last year, Sherwood finished second on the team with 38 points (seventh in the NCHC) and his 14 multi-point games tied for the conference lead. Meyer tallied 26 points in 32 games as a freshman to add another scoring threat. Sherwood appears to be regaining his sophomore form, riding a five-game point streak with six of his 13 points this season coming over that stretch. CAPTAIN S CONTRIBUTIONS: Senior defenseman Louie Belpedio has been contributing at the offensive end of the ice on a consistent basis this season. After going scoreless in the opening series against Providence, the Skokie, Ill., native has recorded at least one point in 13 of 20 games and is third on the team with a careerhigh 20 points (8g, 12a). His 0.91 points per game is the sixth best total among all NCAA blue liners and his eight goals are tied with Grant Hutton for the most in the country among defensemen. HUTTON FOR GOALS: Grant Hutton has turned his breakout sophomore campaign into even bigger gains as a junior. After finishing with just five assists in his freshman season, he poured in a defense-leading nine goals and 18 points last season and leads the MU blue line eight goals and is second with 17 points this season. Hutton has five multi-point games, eclipsing his total and his eight goals are tied for the most among NCAA defensemen. Miami s Record When... 4 Miami at Colorado College Jan GOING GREEN: Sophomore forward Gordie Green has kept his midseason improvement from last year going into this season. The Ann Arbor, Mich., native leads Miami with 25 points (10g, 15a), which surpasses his freshman total of 21 last year. The sophomore posted a five-game point streak that ran from Oct. 20 through Nov. 3, during which he recorded four multi-point games. In his last 41 games dating back to last season, Green has 41 points on 17 goals and 24 assists. THE KIDS CAN PLAY: The RedHawks freshmen have wasted little time in acclimating themselves in the lineup as all six true freshmen skaters have contributed at least a point this season. Casey Gilling and Phil Knies lead the class of 2021 with 14 points apiece while MU s freshman class total of 48 points is tied with North Dakota for 13th in the country. STARTS AT YOUR OWN END: Miami has been at its best when its played a stellar defensive game. When the RedHawks made eight-straight NCAA Tournament appearances from , their worst rank in scoring defense was 17th as they finished in the top 10 in defense seven times with six top-five performances, including two seasons as the nation s top defensive team. While joining the highly competitive NCHC has put the RedHawks up against more high-octane offenses, the fact remains that they have been at their best when keeping the puck out of their net consistently.
