MEMBERS Edition Page 9 Asian Cup will showcase Australian attitude Australia should treat the 2015 AFC Asian Cup as a means of changing its attitude towards Asia, said the man who took the Socceroos to their first World Cup. Rale Rasic has been appointed ambassador to the event in Australia in January alongside former Socceroos stars Paul Okon and Brett Emerton and former Asian Cup winner Ali Abbas. Rasic, who guided the part-time Socceroos to the World Cup in Germany in 1974, has travelled extensively in Asia through his football and business commitments. He said he had encountered only kindness and generosity from Asians towards Australians over many years and the country should take this golden opportunity to say 'thank you' and reciprocate. "That's mainly why I accepted this role, to form a bridge between Australia and Asia," Rasic said. "For too long we have been a low-key nation and football is only part of it. "It's our culture and attitude towards Asia from many perspectives that need changing. "We owe this to ourselves if we want to make progress as a country. "It's about our future, about our economic future and the future of the next generations. "And all this will depend on who we are and what we are. "We live in a global society and Asia is a massive part of the world and personally Asia is the place that provides me with my greatest memories. "The friends I made in 1974 and that I still have today I will cherish till I die. "The hospitality I have seen showered on Australians is unbelievable really and we should all be able to say a collective 'thank you' to our friends next year. "I think Asia knows that we are capable of organising top class sporting events but I think they also need to know that we feel part of Asia. "The friendliness of the Koreans, Iraqis and Iranians, for example, towards Australia is something I will always cherish. "We need to show hospitality to Asia next year. Hospitality is just kindness, nothing else, and it does not cost money. "The Asian Cup should be the vehicle from which to spread goodwill and understanding so the cultural barriers that have existed for so long will be broken." Rasic said Australia had a glorious chance of winning its first major honour but it must expect a backlash from Asia's big guns that did not do too well in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. "For Australians second spot is never good enough," he said. "But we have to acknowledge that Asia has made incredible progress. "Iran, Korea Republic and Japan played quite well at the World Cup but they realise that finishing bottom of their group is not good enough. "Everybody will try to regroup and will see the Asian Cup as an opportunity to rebuild for Russia 2018. "It will be hard for the Socceroos." By Philip Micallef 12 Aug 2014-3:02pm
