Volunteers are the backbone of every Australian Football club: no club could manage without them. The Swans are coming to Lionel Watts.

On Thursday June 1st we are fortunate enough to have a couple of Swans players coming along to visit the Forest Lions. This is always a fun night, with the Swans players assisting with training drills and then an opportunity for the kids to ask questions, grab some photos and get an autograph or two. Why not put your hand up on game day and help out. Each week teams are looking for Boundary Umpires, Goal Umpires, water carriers and runners. When we play at home the need for volunteers increases as we need to man the canteen and BBQ as well as the responsibilities of Ground Management and First Aid. The afternoon will kick off around 5pm and will finish off with a BBQ and a drink for the kids. Everyone is welcome to come along and join in the fun. The AFL in Round 8 of the 2017 Toyota AFL Premiership Season highlighted the invaluable contribution Australian Football volunteers make to our game as part of National Volunteer Week.

The hard work and commitment of our 120,000 volunteers provides opportunities for girls, boys, men and women to participate in Australian Football at all levels nationwide.

On behalf of the AFL Commission and Executive, I would like to acknowledge your selflessness and loyalty to the Leagues, Clubs, Schools, NAB AFL Auskick centres and communities you serve. Congratulations to our fabulous u17s Coach Cal D'Souza who recently hit his 50th game for the Manly Wolves (Premier Division). In a recent article, the Manly Wolves are quoted as saying (and we at Forest totally agree) that Callum is a genuinely fantastic bloke, is always setting a ridiculous pace for those in preseason and is yet to be toppled. Cal has worked very hard to become an established regular within our premier division side and has reaped the rewards, never looking back. Cal states his premier division debut in his first year at the club as great moment and also winning the coaches award last year as a highlight in his time at the club. It is because of you that more than 5,500 matches and 4,500 NAB AFL Auskick sessions are held each weekend throughout Australia, bringing communities together and providing an opportunity to be physically active in a safe and welcoming environment. The AFL maintains a strong focus on supporting the grassroots of our game, which continues to underpin the strength of football nationally and provides a starting point for almost every AFL and AFLW champion.
