1 HOWLER EVERTON WOLVES JUNIOR AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL CLUB 26th April 2017 COACH ESKO It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of our much loved under 8 Coach Esko Piipari after a long battle with brain cancer. Esko joined the Wolves last year and was quick to volunteer for the role of Under 6 Blue Coach. Our young players, their parents and all who knew Esko thought the world of him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. A VEIW FROM THE SIDELINES Last Sunday we hosted our first youth games for the season with the day running relatively smoothly. We thank everyone who helped out on the day whether it was in the canteen, out on the field or cleaning up afterwards. A special thanks to Leighann Ness Wilson for cleaning up the office on Saturday she did a brilliant job and we can t remember a time when the office looked so good. Junior games start this weekend with our U11 Girls playing on Friday night and all other teams playing on Saturday. If you are wondering where to find the fixture go to and click on the Fixtures and Results Tab. Your team manager will also keep you informed throughout the season. In a mark of respect we ask that all players wear black arm bands during this weekend games. The club will also be donating all canteen takings and accepting cash donations to help his family financially during this difficult time. We are still accepting registrations so bring your friends along and get them to sign up. GOLD SPONSOR

3 Under 14 Round 4 MATCH REPORTS After a long break between games, the team was very keen to get back on the field for our first home game against Coorparoo. We expected to be challenged and went out with a simple game plan, focussed on defensive pressure and good ball use to make a good contest. We set a strong defensive tone early, laying some good tackles and bumps to pressure their ball carriers with Tom leading the way forcing turnovers from defence and Korbin taking on bigger opponents to win the ball. Ella worked hard, despite a solid bump and her pressure allowed Grace to provide a great tackle, winning a free kick to set up our first goal. Ryan, recovering from foot injury played up forward was on the end of Grace s kick for the first goal and snapping a second to give us a good start. They managed a goal on the siren and we took a seven point lead into the first break. We maintained our defensive pressure into the second, making scoring difficult. Duncan showed this with a great goal saving tackle deep in defence as did Luke, forcing a behind with a chase down tackle. Our intensity was best demonstrated by Jacob who, when outnumbers 4 to 1, was able to force a ball up with his effort to win the ball. The forwards were working hard too, with Atticus making a great lead to take a contested overhead mark. Jahli fought hard for the loose ball in the forward 50 and was rewarded, kicking the only goal of the quarter to increase our lead at the half time break. After the long break, we continued to press to force errors to turn over the ball and keep it in our forward line. Across mid field, we cut off their attempts to come from defence, with Doug providing some key stops in the square and Lachlan, playing up from the Under 12s, laying a great tackle in running down his opponent. We also started to click in attack with some good teamwork to move the ball from the contests we were winning. Cameron worked well, getting free in the corridor to give a target and kick us forward as did Rhys, linking with team mates to kick a good running goal. Again our forwards were tough when the ball came in with Andrew regularly trapping the ball in to give us repeat opportunities to score and Sam off the flank tackling and spoiling well to be rewarded with a goal and give us a handy lead. The team were keen to put in a strong last quarter to close out the game and maintained the intensity despite the warm weather. James finished a good game, contesting well and taking some good overhead marks and Will continued to run through mid-field, repelling their attacks. Ethan, who worked hard all game, looked to share the ball well to bring team mates into the game which allowed some great passages leading to a set shot to Ryan who converted and a great chain of passes that lead to Alyssa taking a strong mark on the edge of the goal square to kick her first goal which was well celebrated by her team mates. The final siren ended what was a great team effort and one of our best games as a group. Everybody played hard and had good games, particularly Rhys with his tackling and run and Ella who constantly put pressure on the ball carrier or supported team mates. A special thanks to Lachlan, who had a great game playing up, being prepared to tackle and run with the ball. Coach Sean Doolan 3

6 Under 16 Round 4 After what feels like the longest start to a season ever, the U16's finally got to play their second game for the season in Round 4. So all the planets aligned and luck was on our side as we were able to field a team of 22 with support from the U14's (Rhys and Will) and Coorparoo U16's (Hamish, Isaac and Shayle). The weather was also extremely kind and it was a perfect morning for our game against Redlands. It was really a match of two halves, with the first half being a fairly even contest with Redlands scoring first and the Wolves quickly responding to take the lead about midway through the first quarter. The second quarter saw the Wolves consolidate their lead with five goals in a row before Redlands responded late in the quarter with three of their own. The game started to get very physical in the late stages with Redlands trying to intimidate our side with ill directed aggression and abusive behaviour. The Wolves were very settled at half time despite being roughed up late in the half, and we held about a three goal lead. With the match up for grabs in the third quarter, our lads remained composed and with their focus solely on winning the football and helping each other. The third quarter saw the opposition take their attempts at intimidation to another level, but it was all in vain as the Wolves simply cracked on and kicked nine unanswered goals for the term, whilst brushing off everything that was thrown at them from the Sharks. We gave them no respite in the last quarter either, pressing on and winning by 104 points. The first half was a pretty even contest, but the second half was a good example of the difference between a disciplined group playing fair, honest, hard football as opposed to wasting energy and effort by continually penalising your own team mates through stupid acts of misdirected aggression and continually arguing with the umpires...it's dumb football and should never, ever happen. At the end of the day we absolutely 6
7 thumped them on both the ground and the scoreboard. We had many multiple goal kickers on the day which is very pleasing indeed, but I must make a special call out for Liam who kicked his first AFL goal, and also to Rhys for his contribution of two well earned goals. Having the boys from the U14's - Rhys and Will stepping up and the support from the Coorparoo lads was fantastic and certainly very much appreciated by all the Wolves players and supporters. Hamish, Isaac and Shale slotted in perfectly on the wings and half forward, and provided us with some delightful displays of ball use and skill and all three had outstanding games, contributing with a number of goals between them and many more goal assists. We certainly hope we see these lads in the Wolves jersey again this season. All in all it was a very pleasing result, particularly after just falling short against Morningside in Round 1 by just six points. In that game we were only beaten by fresh legs late in the last quarter after leading for the whole game, despite the end result the team performed very well. It was most pleasing to see that despite setting such a high standard for themselves in that game, they showed more improvement in all areas this week and after the second match they have raised the bar further. We have a bye this week, but we're looking very forward to our next game in Round 6 at home against the Ipswich Cats. A massive thank you to all parents who volunteer and help out on the day. It's a massive burden for Craig to organise so if you can help out in any way please don't be afraid to put your hand up and ease the stress on Craig. Also another big thanks to Corin and Suzi Korander (Coorparoo) for getting things organised between the two clubs which after one game has proven a great success. Some weeks we will struggle for numbers, but we will always do our best and be up there at the end of the season.
