U10 GOLD V Mt Gravatt 16/04/11 16 April Game 2 and the boys encountered another windy day against a traditionally competitive opponent in the Vultures from Mt Gravatt A quick start from the Coorparoo lads saw early marks to Joshua and Jake, leading to 2 goals. Being against the wind meant hard work in defence and Harry W, Sam, Harry Sam and Ethan only let the opponents score once. Great team work saw Miles kick another goal Quarter 2 and it started to rain goals and behinds. All the forwards contributed strongly, whilst Ben Ryan was a rock in defence as was Fletcher who delivered a booming kick out from a restart More goals in q3 from excellent team work Ben and Fletcher with Wilson and Justin tying up the ball strongly. The goals came from great centre work ( Harry Steel, Wilson and Sam and Sam) A great mark in q4 from Harrison led to more points as did a goal on the run from Josh. The boys showed much improvement from week 1 with good hand eye skills and better teamwork. We al hope that Zac is feeling better, great effort to try and have a game. Men of the match Harry Steel and Josh. Steven Ryan Kym Nettleton (Editor) roosnews@sasqld.com U14 V EVERTON Our first grading match looked to be a challenge as we travelled out to Moorooka to face the Everton Wolves. From the first bounce things seemed to be working well in the middle. With Josh King taking two big runs resulting in goals we looked to be on our way to a win. With that, some sharp shooting from Ziggy and Dermott helped us to a 14 point win. Scores were; Everton Coorparoo We then journeyed to mud-covered Ferny Grove where we took on Redcliffe. Through great courage and determination we came away with another win; Redcliffe Coorparoo For our third grading match we travelled to a much better field of Sandgate to do battle with Calamvale where at quarter time we were down by 2 goals. Our tackling picked up for the rest of the game and our scoring did too. With a quick hat-trick of goals to Josh H and 3 goals to Blake B we ran over Calamvale by 5 goals. Scores were Calamvale Coorparoo Our fourth and last grading match was by far our toughest as we played Springwood at West Juniors. Due to the Easter break we were 6 players down, including ALL of our ruckman! This left us with 15 players and 3 backing up from the 13 s we had very limited ruck stocks and Springwood with a full bench. When Blake B did his knee 5 minutes into the first quarter things were looking slim with just 17 players. Ziggy, Jordan and Henry rucked reasonably well considering they had hardly ever rucked before. We toughed out the first half of the game to be up but they say games are won or lost in the 3 rd quarter and with some quick Springwood goals early in the third quarter this resulted in us going down by around 5 goals. Scores were Springwood Coorparoo Special thanks to the U13s who helped us out in the grading series. We hope to see all the boys on the training track both Tues & Thurs after the break, so we can build from the grading series and record some more wins. Well done boys. Blake Brook
Page 4 UNDER 10 NAVY v Morningside 16/04/11 Coorparoo Navy travelled to Morningside to play the Red team. Short of numbers Sam Hickie (U/9 White), Fletcher Brook and Sam Caton all helped out. Thanks boys. It was a hard, fast and skilful game of football. The entire team stood up to a very committed opposition. Player of the match was Blaike who showed courage throughout the whole game. Captain Callum had a strong game and combined well with Patrick and Hudson. Both boys having outstanding games. Kyle and Ayden had their best games for the club, it was great to see. Max, Harrison and Noah were hard at the ball all day, never giving up against a constant attack. Sam K was again solid. It was the best game I have seen the boys play. Brilliant! Greg King (Coach) Do you know the Club Song? (refer page 1)
Page 5 UNDER 11 NAVY v Wynnum 16/04/11 The boys were pumped up for their first game of the year after the bye in the first round. Alex was captain and led the boys out against Wynnum. The boys welcomed the open expanses of a bigger ground, no zones and generally did a great job of staying in their positions and not crowding the ball. DJ, Sam B & Ricky all had their first runs for Coorparoo and were all welcome additions to the club. Sam K, Mac & Harry H lined up in the middle of the ground for the first centre bounce and all three had brilliant games. Great determination for the footy, fantastic skills and plenty of run amongst the three of them. Kyle played the last half of the game in the ruck and provided plenty of ball for his team-mates around him. Lucas, Adrian, Ricky & Maxim shared time along the half forward line and saw plenty of the footy throughout the game. Good leading and crumbing of packs saw each of them gain plenty of touches. Harrison, Sam B & Myles were our full forward line, Myles had a great game coming off a limited preseason and showed plenty of hunger to get the footy. Alex, Jackson, DJ & Jacob played together along full back line and were rocks in defence, not letting the opposition get too close to the goals. Alex kicked out superbly, Jackson showed great determination for the ball, DJ was full of enthusiasm in his first game and Jacob loved sweeping behind the packs picking off the loose ball. Blake, Josh, Harry N & Luke were our half back line and worked well as a team. Good manning up in defense and they all provided good run out of the back line. Chris was presented with the player of the week for a fantastic game. Just before being presented with the trophy he was overheard saying I think I just played the best game of my life and he had! A super effort, great desperation for the footy, great skills and always looking for a team-mate. Fantastic effort Chris, keep up the good work! Brett Taylor (Coach) Submit your player milestones e.g. 50 games, 100 games to: roosnews@sasqld.com UNDER 10 BLUE v Morningside 16/04/11 Under 10 Blues were at home to old rivals Morningside on Saturday and with Vossy and the Lions warming up getting ready to take over the oval the boys fired up and never looked troubled. The team work was sensational with the boys hand passing and kicking to each other being a highlight of the game. The other positive was their ability to mark the ball under pressure and the way we attacked to footy, well done boys and have a great Easter! Damian and Paul (Coaches) Flynn gets by his mark and boots to the goal. U10 Blue PLAYER OF THE WEEK Luke
Page 6 UNDER 9 NAVY v Morningside 16/04/11T The amazing team work of the Under 9 Navy team, coach Mark and supporters was very evident after a tough match on Saturday against Morningside Red. The first quarter saw Morningside Red come out firing, but their efforts were hampered by Ethan P when he blocked their first attempt at goal. Luca overcame the brilliant defence displayed to score the first goal of the game, quickly followed by a behind from Thomas. Both of these players were able to score these goals due to the support from Matthew, who chased the ball consistently. The teamwork displayed by the centres; Ethan T, Olivia, Sam D and Lachie, ensured the ball was dependably delivered to the forwards to allow the conversion of points. When the ball did manage to get into the opposition s territory, Connor was fiercely contesting it to obtain the turnover. Kicking out of the opposition defence, the ball was called for and marked superbly by Ethan T. At quarter time, Mark reminded the players to focus on what they had been practising at training which was to call for the ball and handballing technique and this was evidenced in the remainder of the game. The second quarter started strongly with Jackson punching the ball up, backed up by Ethan P, who then disposed of the ball to Lachie. The backs - Thomas, Matthew, Sam W and Luca - did not see the ball this quarter as the centres and forwards kept it in our half. In the centres, the action was fast and furious with a handball to Cory who then kicked the ball, marked by Sam D which resulted in Lachie scoring the second goal for Coorparoo Navy. Sam D went above and beyond by placing his body on the line to stop the kick by Morningside which directly resulted in Ethan T scoring the goal. A superb intercept by Luca was also a highlight of this quarter. Again, the 3 rd quarter started strongly with the defence by Olivia causing the turnover. After Morningside scored a goal, the ball up by Sam W was backed up by Matthew fighting fiercely for it. The calling and teamwork through the centres resulted in the ball being received by Cory who handballed to Jackson which was then disposed to Connor and back to Jackson who kicked the ball towards the goal which unfortunately hit the centre post and a behind was scored. The kick by Morningside saw Ethan P intercept and score a goal. From the centre bounce, all of the players in Navy were with their corresponding opponent. In the backs, Sam D took a fantastic mark to allow the game to continue in Coorparoo s end. The quarter ended with a long kick by Thomas to put the ball into our end of the field. The 4 th quarter had a shaky start with two quick opening goals by Morningside Red. The coach had a quick talk to the players which saw the team refocus. The one on one defence displayed by Connor, put the pressure on the opposition and allowed Cory to gain possession and clear the opposition s end by kicking the ball to the centres. Lachie took the mark. Olivia then handballed to Ethan T. The loose ball was contested by Ethan P who then obtained possession, bounced and kicked the ball. The teamwork in the forwards was evident, with strong calling, kicking and passing between Luca, Thomas and Sam W. It was clearly an exciting game and all are to be congratulated for their participation. Player of the Match: Ethan P Encouragement Award: Olivia Rebecca Whittle
Page 7 U12 NAVY V West Juniors Coorparoo def West Juniors A pleasing result for our last Grading Game with the Roos just getting over the top of a tough and well drilled opponent in West Juniors. In the first half the boys tried their best but found it tough to get good use of the ball. The effort was there for all to see as there was a lot of one out contests around the ground. In the second half we were first to the ball and started to hit our targets. As the game progressed we worked as a team and moved further in front on the scoreboard. We are a strong side when the ball is on the ground but need to work harder at staying on our feet and delivering good ball by both hand and foot to our team mates. We are competitive and in the weeks to come as the boys get used to a regular position the flow of our game will improve. I would like to see the boys transfer training drills into the game such as handballing and knocking the ball more than 3 metres from the pack, positioning themselves one kick off the play and bouncing back into position after the play has moved on. I anticipate this will happen as the season progresses. There has been a lot of positives to come from our grading games including the skills and depth of players at Coorparoo in the Under 12 age group. From myself and everyone involved in the grading process we would like to thank all the boys for their hard work, commitment and good attitude. Well done boys! Peter Sherry (Coach) UNDER 8 NAVY V Morningside Black 16/04/11 Our first away game of the season was against a strong side in Morningside Black. The threat of rain held off and the team ran onto the field behind captain for the day Luke. The boys started confidently with James and Taj combining well in defense to clear the ball from the danger zone and keeping the opposition forward line quiet with some committed work. Zak won some good clean possession, distributed the ball to his team mates and added a couple of goals. The second half started like the first with Campball and Baiden competing strongly in the centre winning the ball and getting the team moving forward. The high pace of the game continued into the final quarter with strong defence from Luke, some great play from Jameson and a long range goal from Archie. The game was even throughout and played in the right spirit. All the boys played well and each of them covered a fair amount of ground. It was great to see the ball being passed between teammates with well placed chip kicks and hand passes. Player of the match award went to Campball for some hard won ball in the centre and getting his teammates involved in the play and the encouragement award went to Aidan who in his first game ran all day and had some key touches late on in the match. Alastair Wilson UNDER 13 (MORNINGSIDE/COORPAROO COMBINED TEAM) V Redcliffe 17/04/11 Morningside/Coorparoo 75 defeated Redcliffe 0 The combined team capped off their grading series with a convincing win over Redcliff at GiffIn Park on Sunday. Having a couple of players out injured and a couple on holidays, we must thank Ben and Harry from the Morningside Under 14s squad for helping the team out on Sunday before heading off to their own match. With ten goal kickers throughout the grading series, the season ahead looks promising. Tackling is good and the talking on the field is getting more vocal. The team is now training and playing well as a group and have come along way in the few short weeks since meeting each other. With one loss and three wins the fixture release is much anticipated! Well done team!
