The Wanderer December 2018 Presidents Message (Outgoing) This is my last message as President for the Hurlstone Park Wanderers. It was always my intention to preside over the club for 3 years, and it has been an honour and a privilege to represent the Hurlstone Park Wanderers. To my wonderful volunteer committee, who without, the club would not exist, I cannot thank you enough. My appreciation for the time and work that you have put into so many areas of the club, and that you do so, not for the recognition, not for thanks, but just because it needs to be done, so that the community, the children have somewhere to play. You know when they are playing, you have the right equipment, can grab a sausage on a roll, and enjoy themselves, with their friends and their families. To see all this come together is all the reward you need. So, many highlights, most of them off the field. Charity Month, Every One can play Day, Mini Roos, Family Fun Day, a wonderful re-union of the 1960 s U/12 team, just to name a few. On the field, our team of the year is the mighty U12/2 boys team, who were the only HPW team to be minor premiers and WIN the grand Final. Well Done Boys. At the clubs AGM this your, two Life Memberships to the club where awarded, for their outstanding services to the club. Congratulations to Adele Walsh and Martin Paddon, both worthy recipients, and we thankyou for your service. Lastly, pls join me in congratulating Rosalie Viney, Hurlstone Park s first women president in our 95th year. I know Rosalie will be magnificent. 2 The Wanderer Presidents Message This is my first President s report so it seems appropriate to give some introductions, though I hope most of you will know me from down at the park or from s. I ve been associated with the club since my older child Gemma began playing as a 6 year old 2019 will be the family s 18 th year at the Club. Along the way I became a sometimes over-enthusiastic parent on the sidelines watching Gemma and Jay (who both still play for the club) and their teams, a team manager, an 030s player (well and truly over 30), an occasional coach, women s coordinator, occasional ground manager and flipper of sausages on the Saturday bbq, Competition Secretary and I am now with some trepidation but also excitement taking over the reigns as President. I am sure you will recognise this a common story in grassroots football you register your kid to play, you turn up to the first training and you realise this is a volunteer endeavour and next thing you are in the thick of it. It takes people putting up their hand to do stuff to make this 1500 player enterprise into a well oiled machine (most of the time), and also that there is nothing so rewarding as being involved in community sport in a great club like Hurlstone Park Wanderers. So I am hoping that in 2019 we will continue to have parents, players and supporters who take the time to get involved. I want to thank the outgoing committee for their tremendous efforts over the past year. Particular mention to outgoing President Mark Higgins. Mark has been part of the HPW family and a member of the Committee for more years than he cares to remember, and has been a leader in community football throughout that time, and we have benefited from his experience, expertise and wisdom. He was HPW s winner of the CDSFA Volunteer Recognition Cec Barlow Award in 2018, and this was truly deserved. I do not think there is a person across the Association who has held more roles than Mark over the years Coach, Coach Educator, Player, Referee, Club Committee, Club President, CDSFA Delegate, CDSFA Committee member, and also always willing to put in the hard yards down at the park. Mark will continue to be a valued member of HPW as co-coach of our Grace Martin Trophy team, and has kindly agreed to contribute his IT expertise in some key activities for On a personal note, as Committee members we have benefited from Mark s guidance, steady hand, great judgement and intrinsic understanding of grassroots football. Thanks also to outgoing committee members David Cranmer and Marin Sardelic who made outstanding contributions to the work of the Club. Thanks also to the continuing committee members. These club members are all amazing volunteers and deserve our thanks (and the best way you can thank them is to offer to help them out in their roles in the coming year!): Anthony Maher (Treasurer), Robin Hawkes (Secretary) and David Tartak, Janice Leahy (Admin Coordinator) and Terry Wong (incoming Vice President and continuing as Coach Coordinator), Billy Fraser, Mark Slocum, and Steve Cumming (changing role from Vice Preisdent ot Registrar) (the other parent in the Viney-Cumming household). The fact that we have three households with two family members on the HPW Committee says a lot about how community football gets you in! 2 The Wanderer December 2018
The Wanderer In coming Presidents Message (cont.) New Committee Members And a very very warm welcome to our incoming Committee members Adele Walsh, Gerry Choate and Warwick Moss. Warwick has been our Senior Men s Coordinator for the past few years, coaches an 030 Women s team and I have been very grateful for his hard work as results recorder on Sunday evenings, and even more grateful that he has put his hand up to be the 2019 Competition Secretary. Gerry has managed his son s team and in 2018 coordinated our Kit for Kids Collection. Adele is our most experienced Age Coordinator, having looked after successive girls age groups since Under 8s. With so much experience our Committee is in great shape for the coming season. As we wind down to the end of the 2018 year, we also start to gear up for the 2019 football year, and what an exciting year it promises to be, both for the mighty Hurlstone Park Wanderers and for Australian football, with the Men s Asian Cup kicking off on January 5, and the Women s World Cup as a highlight of the year, with the Matildas making it into the coveted seeded spots in the draw. I know that many Hurlo players, including me and my family are planning our travel to France to follow the Matildas fortunes. Our own first event of the year will be some of our own MiniTildas acting as mascots and providing half time entertainment at the W League local derby at Leichhardt Oval on 10 January. With so many top international players literally on our doorstep, it would be great to see lots of Hurlo players and supporters there to watch the game and cheer our own players along. The next events for the club for the year are registrations for the 2019 season and grading for junior teams. The FFA is moving everyone across to a new registration platform and Steve, Anthony, Janice and I have had our first training in the new registration system. It promises to add much greater flexibility and make the whole registration process easier for families, but it will mean that everyone has to upload a new photo in 2019 (but it does promise to be pretty easy to do that). I wish all our players and families the best for the holiday season, and look forward to seeing your Travelling Hurlo entries! Best Wishes Rosalie Viney (President 2019) president@hurlstoneparkwanderers.com.au 3 The Wanderer December 2018
Congratulations to HPW team of the Year Congratulations to the U12/2 boys who have been names as the HPW team of the year. The U12/2 boys team was the only team to win the minor premiership and the Grand Final. This year the boys U12 division 2 won both the minor and major premierships, winning every game except one all season. The final was a tight game, and probably the best tactically they played. The final was played at Pratten Park, a long narrow pitch - which meant they had to adjust their preferred attacking style of playing up the wings, and instead play more centrally. Because of the length of the pitch, the game stretched both teams, with both team's back lines playing a strong game. Our boys scored a headed goal from a corner in the second half, and it was as good a goal that you d see, from any age, and deserved to win the Grand Final.. The game was played with a great attitude, and while winning was a great end to a fantastic season, it was also really heartening to see our boys genuinely congratulating their opponents and supporting those who really felt the loss. A great show of camaraderie in our team, and a really positive way to play the game. Well done boys. The Wanderer December
Ewen Park Improvement Plan Those of you who are in the Canterbury Bankstown local government area will be aware of the Ewen Park improvement plan Those of you who have been around the Club for a long time will know that this is the next instalment in longstanding discussions of much needed facilities upgrade. These plans relate largely to the area adjacent to the Ewen Park playing fields but it is a vital opportunity for our members and playing base to have their say. Please take the opportunity to look at the plans and give your opinion, but I d also encourage you to emphasise some key messages for community football: The importance of space to play The fact that the use of the park for training and organised sport is also an opportunity for families and friends to meet and interact The need for better lighting for training The need for adequate amenities to allow for storage of gear, access to clean and functional toilets and change rooms and canteen facilities close to the playing fields. The dedicated mini-field that we have not used for the past two years because it had an unsafe playing surface is part of this plan and it is critical that we let council know that we need this space. 5 The Wanderer December 2018
Terry Wong Coaching Co-ordinator Things are already in full swing from a coaching perspective for Season Here's a few things coming your way: Coach Accreditation The CDSFA is on a drive to increase the number of registered coaches who have completed an age-relevant coaching course (Grassroots, Skills Training, Game Training, Senior Certificate). As a Club, we are a long way off where we want to be and are looking to lead the way in the Association. This roll-out is going to be over 3 years. For 2019, it immediately affects those who intend to coach BBC, AAM 1, GMT, WIL 1, all Division 1 teams and U6-8. Of course, even if you are outside these divisions, we strongly encourage your participation in courses. All course costs are covered by the Club after registering to a HPW team. For more information on where and when these courses are happening, go to or go to the CDSFA s Facebook page footballcanterbury/events/?ref=page_internal Grading Grading for U9-16 is happening on the 3rd & 10th Yatama Park, Clemton Park. Keep an eye out on the Hurlstone Park Wanderer s Facebook page and website for more details. Keep in touch via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram Whilst we will endeavour to keep the website up to date and publish a monthly newsletter through the season, we would like to encourage all players, coaches, managers, parents and supporters to keep in touch via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or . Feel free to ask a question or send photos, scores and share stories from your team throughout the season. Website: Facebook: newsletter@hurlstoneparkwanderers.com.au 6 The Wanderer December 2018
