1 NEWSLETTER #3 Southern Cross Water Polo League (SCWL) WPTAS is still seeking support for the formation teams in the SCWL. A meeting was held at The Old Woolstore on 23/10/17, and a good level of interest was shown. At present a number of the games are anticipated to be held Tasmania, in addition to Melbourne and Sydney. Keeping costs low is a priority. This is a very exciting opportunity for the development of WP athletes and for increased WP participation. Clubs should endeavour to resolve issues internally. If resolution cannot be reached the Club President should refer to WPTAS. 2. Formal or informal complaints received by WPTAS. Issues may be dealt with verbally or in written form. Note, written warnings must be replied to in writing. 3. Non-compliance or lack of resolution may result in suspension and/or nonadmittance to games. 2 WATER POLO TASMANIA: NEWSLETTER # 3 NOVEMBER 2017 Flippa Ball term 4 The term 4 roster of Flippa Ball is starting at the Clarence pool Thursday 2nd November. Kids are provided this great opportunity to learn the basics of Water Polo. Group training sessions are held on Thursday nights pm and games on Sundays pm. Watch out!! Future WP stars are getting in the pool! A sausage sizzle will held at the Clarence pool at the Sunday games. A BIG thank you to Tom Reale and Alex Kuzis for helping to organise and run competition at short notice. WPTAS Free Referee information sessions John Whitehouse and Justin McMullen have kindly offered to provide insight and to share their knowledge with future or current referees who are ready to learn and improve their understanding of the rules. WPTAS encourages all referees to attend these two amazing opportunities. ALL current referees should attend. Session 1: with John Whitehouse 3/11/17 Don t miss this fantastic opportunity to learn from one of Australia s foremost experts in the rules of WP (he is part of the group who designs them!) Session 2: with Justin McMullen 17/11/17 Justin is Tasmania s expert on the judiciary side of WP. He will be discussing, Referees: the third team in every game, and providing a unique perspective on refereeing and referees. 3 Australia Country League (ACL) WPTAS is supporting a senior men s and women s team to participate in the ACL Championships which will be held in Rockhampton in May U18s Nationals In 2018, the u18 Water Polo nationals are going to be held in Canberra 26 March - 3 April. Tasmanian u18 representation will be influenced by participation in the SCWL. However, WPTAS is pleased to support a teams should significant interest be shown. More information will follow ASAP. NEW SCORE PADS: We are still learning... Please be patient. A basic instruction sheet has been laminated and placed on each score table to assist. Please only press the buttons you need to. WATER POLO TASMANIA 2017 ANNUAL AWARDS NIGHT AND DINNER When: Saturday 9th December Where: Hotel Soho: 124 Davey St, Hobart. Time: 6pm pm Cost: $35 adults. $20 children (u14). 3 courses, set menus only. It will be a great night including; the presentation of MVP trophies (club and state), premiership plaques, referee and volunteer awards. Tickets can be paid by direct deposit to: Water Polo Tas Inc. 4 14 and under state training Well done to all the athletes trying out for the state teams. It is wonderful to see so many new (and old) faces participating and putting in so much effort and time into training. enjoy, learn and have lots of fun playing Water Polo. Photo below: 2017 u14 Tasmanian WP athletes The groups have started swimming training with Ray Winstanley at the Clarence pool in the Water Polo swimming academy up to 4 times a week and are also doing ball skills twice a week. Fantastic commitment and effort is being shown by all. WPTAS hopes all participants continue to CODES OF CONDUCT Parents, spectators or coaches must NOT approach referees immediately after games for discussions. The accepted amount of time is a minimum of 30 minutes (as per WPAUS competition rules). A written communication can be passed to the Director of Operations for analysis at a later time. Penalties will apply if breaches to this rule occur. We must support our referees at all times! They are human and will make mistakes. This is only natural. Without referees there is no game. Please encourage respect and good behaviour wherever possible. If you are unsure of Codes of Conduct, they can be found on the WPAUS website. WARNING!! Athletes/coaches playing in the last games of the night MUST assist in the pack-up of ALL the Water Polo equipment. This includes goals, chairs, tables, scoreboards, 5m/2m marker and nets. Do not leave without helping. Points will be deducted from teams that do not assist in pack up without further reminders. 4

5 PLAYER PROFILE: Sam Whitehouse Team: Wet Magic senior men. Tasmanian representative in the Australian WP Country League How long have you played WP? I just realised I have been playing Water Polo for 20 years! I started when I was in grade 3, playing Flippa Ball for my school, St Virgils. Then, I started playing Junior Polo in grade 5 for Wet Magic. I have played, refereed and coached ever since. What got you interested in WP? My parents. Mum and Dad gave me a Water polo ball when I was born. Your Dad is John Whitehouse, one of Australia's foremost experts in WP. Has he always been your coach? Yeah, pretty much. I am very lucky. He is a great coach. Have you got a favourite WP moment? Winning a Silver Medal at the Australian Country Championships this year. We played NSW in the final. It was a great achievement. What advice would you give younger WP players? SWIM FAST! SWIM WELL! Never sacrifice technique and NEVER BE SCARED! THANK YOU! Special thanks and recognition to Lara Wallace for always offering to help and pack up and to Anna Walls for her assistance with trouble shooting the new score pads. And of course to all the other volunteers and helpers; particularly the regulars at the score tables. You do your clubs proud.
