SHARKS BITE Issue 2 2 nd March info@sutherlandbasketball.net.au PHONE: (02) Sutherland District Basketball Association is committed to ensuring FAIR PLAY and providing a SAFE ENVIRONMENT for all participants. ASSOCIATION STAFF CHANGE Many of you would have had contact in the last 18 months with our wonderful Admin. Secretary, Jacqui Meldrum. Jacqui s husband was transferred to Queensland for work in January and, consequently, Jacqui had to resign (end of 2010). Jacqui was highly regarded by all the members and staff of SDBA, and we wish her and her family all the best in their new adventure. We miss you Jacqui you have left some big shoes to fill! We anticipate that Jacqui s replacement will commence around mid March. SCOREBENCH COURSE: This is ideal for new rep. parents or anyone wanting to brush up on their skills, and is free of charge! GAME REPORTS The Under 18 boys division 2 team played six games over the past two weekends, winning 5 of their 6 games. It seems they have done enough to complete the grading games and reach their goal of playing in the 2nd division of the Sydney Conference (which will be official on Wednesday). The boys played with great effort although not always efficient in their skill sets. This is preseason and unfortunately for other teams they did not make the grade because it is always difficult to play your best basketball four weeks into training. The Sharks did enough to win the games, now it will be time to refine and execute a game plan to compete in the tough competition that is ahead of them. Defeated Hornsby Defeated Glebe Defeated Hawksbury in OT Defeated Springwood Defeated Penrith Lost to Macarthur Great job boys, but the work is ahead of us. John Suva, Coach

4 INDIVIDUAL SKILLS TRAINING Term 1 Mondays pm, Weekly Fee $7.50 These clinics are designed to assist players in learning and developing skills used in basketball. Ages 8 to 18. Club players most welcome. This is an excellent opportunity for your child to improve his or her skill level under quality coaching. Coaching youth basketball Coaching Hints OK, let's put together a team... First, you probably have limited practice time at the younger age groups. Don't try to accomplish too much, and keep things simple. Practices for younger children should probably be no longer than minutes because of their short attention span. So what are you going to teach them? Others may disagree with me, but here are some of my thoughts. Teach the fundamentals: At every practice, do ten minutes of ball-handling and dribbling drills. Do simple passing drills. Teach footwork (pivoting, stopping, triple threat position (square up to basket), defensive slide, how to jump to do a layup, etc. Correct shooting form will be difficult to teach at very young ages, since it will just be an effort to get the ball up to the hoop! But start working on correct form when the kids are strong enough...maybe 10 years or older. Teach them how to play man to man defence, how to rebound and box out and other simple concepts of the game. Next week - team offence. JOHN SUVA Participation & Development Officer
Sharks Referees Green Tees Program I m wearing green, so please don t see red! If you see officials wearing this green shirt then it s important for you to know they are BEGINNERS. As with any learner they may make mistakes. Give them a chance to develop their skills without harassment and abuse. They are doing their best! Help us to help you by supporting our referees! If you need to address an issue, please see our Referees Development Manager. JUNIOR REFEREES PROGRAM PROUDLY SPONSORED BY CADBURY SCHWEPPES GATORADE
6 Wheelchair Basketball Wheelchair basketball development program is held at Sutherland Basketball Stadium on Thursday nights, except in school holidays. At $8.00 per person you get to experience this fantastic sport and it's lots of fun to play. It s a great team sport that can help build up strength and co-ordination, learn new ball and chair skills... and of course make new friends along the way There is a place in wheelchair basketball for anyone who wants to give it a go, from players to coaches to referees. Adults and kids as young as 5 and 8 yrs old can enjoy the game with this beginners program helping you learn the basics. Anyone who is able to push a wheelchair, including able bodies, can play wheelchair basketball. The game is fast and energy-driven and is all about tactics - like a game of chess on wheels! For all the juniors, there are opportunities to develop your skills through the training sessions at Sutherland and enjoy great success in wheelchair basketball at a national level. The Australian Men's team, the Rollers are currently ranked no.1 in the world after winning gold at 2008 Paralympics Games in Beijing. They also won the Paralympics World Cup in Manchester in The Australian Women's team won bronze at 2008 Paralympics Games.
7 ATTENTION ALL JUNIOR PLAYERS AND THEIR PARENTS/GUARDIANS CHILD PROTECTION If you are seeking advice or wish to discuss any matter relating to possible misconduct by an SDBA staff member or volunteer (coaches, managers), please contact one of our Child Protection Officers. NB: All discussions will be held in the strictest of confidence. These people have been appropriately checked to ascertain their suitability with the Department of Tourism, Sport & Recreation (SDBA s Approved Screening Agency). Reportable conduct means: SDBA CHILD PROTECTION OFFICERS: Mr Lee Howell, tel. (M) Mrs Rachel Loma, tel. (H) , (M) (a) Any sexual offence, or sexual misconduct; (b) Any assault, ill treatment or neglect of a child; or (c) Any behaviour that causes psychological harm to a child. TRIBUNAL COMMITTEE VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED Our Association is seeking volunteers to be on our Tribunal Committee. The committee meets, on average, once a month, to consider officials citations of offences on the court. The committee consists of three adults (including the chairman), and meets on a Tuesday evening at 6.30 pm, and takes about 30 minutes to consider each report. The Association Manager organises the tribunals (phone calls, correspondence, etc.), and the chairman takes notes at the meeting. The other two committee members just attend the meeting and assist the chairman in deciding the penalty, if any, for the charged person. We need volunteers for all three committee members. Ideally members would be contacted on a rotational basis, thus sharing the responsibility. This is a responsible position, but one that is interesting and gratifying for the tribunal committee members, and provides an insight into the workings of the judiciary system. If you are interested in being on this panel (chairman or committee member), please contact Brent Elphinston at the stadium ASAP.
