1 Sharks Bite Issue 11 21st July 2016 Vale Graham Hill,OAM What words could possibly suffice to honour the life of Graham Kent Hill, who passed away during the school holidays? A man who gave his whole life as a volunteer in multiple areas of public life, and particularly in The Shire, Graham was a founding member of The Tradies, a Director for 46 years, President from 1979 until his recent retirement, and a valued supporter of so many sporting groups and community charities that would be near impossible to determine. Graham was a man who saw a need to develop a meeting place for unionists to discuss political and social issues and to act upon their determinations for the good of the community. As a young teacher, he joined the Teachers Union and helped establish The Trade Union Club in 1960 for that purpose. Graham became a Teachers Federation Area Representative and pursued this career in order to engender high standards for teachers We re and on pupils the web! within the Shire as well as the State. Graham was net.au a keen supporter of sporting bodies, in particular the Eloura Surf Club for decades, and more recently as a keen Sharks Basketball supporter. The Tradies has been our greatest community sponsor over many years and Graham was invited to come to a few senior Sharks mens games. Instead of just coming up to for one game or two, Graham took a great interest in the game of Basketball and became a very keen supporter, driving to country venues so he wouldn t miss BJ s team in action! 2 Issue 11 Page 2 Level O Coaching Course We conducted a Level O coaching course (renamed Beginning Coaching General Principles Course-Basketball) before the school holidays and we had 4 coaches complete the course. We are always looking for new coaches to help at Learn to play, club and school level. Hopefully this also jump starts their journey into coaching at a higher level such as Representative coaching. Thanks to these individuals for their time and good luck in their basketball coaching experiences. James Minshall-Sutherland Kassandra Stojkoski-Jannali Blake Kelly-Gymea Hannah Sheaffe-Jannali Sharks School Holiday Camp We held another school holiday program and had many new faces as well as some kids that have previously experienced this activity before. We always encourage an enjoyable environment with the emphasis on having plenty of fun. Our coaches did a wonderful job in delivering this message and in doing that it is a great way of developing these youngsters into better players. 3 Page 3 Sharks Page 3 Bite Happy Coach! Happy Kids! Happy Families! There is only one thing sweeter than winning against Bankstown and that s beating them twice in one week! Game 1; Sutherland Sharks v Bankstown 91:71 Win, an early Sunday start at Bankstown Stadium and the boys were fired up for a win, they held it together for the first 3 quarters and drew in the fourth. We had 9 players of which 5 scored double figures and all players got points, so a fairly even game by all boys. Game 2; Sutherland Sharks v Bankstown 104:54 Win, this was a nice one. The bleachers were packed with Sutherland supporters and boy did we turn up! Both teams only had 8 both missing key players but that was to be our night. In a display of determination our boys played from the first tip off until the last basket and DEFENCE was the winner on the night. The usual sprays from the coach kept the boys inline and having Obi back on the sideline helped keep things running smoothly. 6 of our 8 players managed double figures in a very well spread game. I don t normally single out players but welcome to u18 s basketball Josh Cetinich this was his time to shine and turn up he did. Next game is Penrith at home we are equal on the table in 2 nd place and a win should cement our finals position. 9 wins from `12 starts and an undefeated pre-season, Happy Coach! Happy Kids! Happy Families! Brian Elton The 18m1 winning train keeps rolling! Sharks 103 v Penrith 97 This win all but gives Sharks 18m1 second place for the season or maybe even the minor premiership. 'Kristian who' our second win against Penrith with Sharks only having 8 players everyone did there bit. 5 players in double figures on the score board, over 94% of our free throws falling in the net proves once again coach is right "free throws win games." A big defensive game with 36 rebounds at times we were double figures in front coming as close as 2 points in the dying minutes. The team and coaching staff kept it together to come away with a great victory. Brian Elton

4 Issue 11 Page 4 Game times for Monday, Wednesday and Thursday nights will change next week, starting 25/7/16 as we are returning to 50 minute time slots for juniors. 4.15pm 5.05pm 5.55pm 6.45pm 7.40pm 8.35pm 9.30pm Tuesday game times will remain the same. Tuesday Under 10's Competition We have renamed our under 10 s competition program to DOL- PHIN LEAGUE. DOLPHIN LEAGUE will be held at Sutherland Volkswagen Stadium every Tuesday in School term from 4.15pm. This program is the ideal way to progress from our Learn to Play and Aussie Hoops programs where skills are taught to a Game situation with Real Coaches and Real Referees. The program is designed to get you ready to join one of our domestic club teams and start playing real games of basketball. The program is a great way for kids to start to learn the skills of basketball in a competitive environment. Fun for all!
