1 Sharks Bite Issue 18 7th November 2013 We re on the web! net.au Sutherland District Basketball Association is committed to ensuring FAIR PLAY and providing a SAFE ENVIRONMENT for all participants Waratah Park Rawson Avenue, SUTHERLAND 2232 PO Box 55, SUTHERLAND, 1499 Phone: Fax: admin@sutherlandbasketball. net.au Website: BOYLES HOTEL SUTHERLAND It has been a great experience attending the stadium, and also the satellite basketball centres, over recent months - seeing the keen attitudes and sportsmanship displayed by our young players. Pink Ball has been a great success, supporting girls in their understanding of the game. The staff have done a great job organising new competitions as well as association based teams, supporting the clubs in midweek competitions. Recent Representative coaching appointments have been made. The first round of trials saw a good number of players attending. The skill level through all age groups was excellent, and this bodes well for the coming season. There was certainly a positive energy throughout the trials. Wheelchair Basketball really operates well on a Thursday night, as does Special Olympics on a Friday night. If you feel like giving your son or daughter a sense of community or a sense of inspiration, bring them up to join in a training session! Special thanks to young Jamie Kirk, who has been helping out at Special O as part of her Duke of Edinburgh leadership award. The recent Kings game saw a return to great numbers at the stadium. With the appointment of BJ Carter and Jo Nicholson to the Head Senior Coach positions, we will continue to develop pathways to which our young players can aspire. Let s hope we can support these teams and get to home games! Our facilities committee has obtained tenders for new top grade lighting for the whole stadium. Hopefully, this process will be completed over the Christmas holidays, and not even old timers will have any excuse for missing a catch. Good luck to all those who are completing final trials, and also to all club teams in this new season. Paul O Neill President
2 Page 2 Sharks Bite Practice Drills and teaching points for Passing and Catching (continued from previous sharks bites) 1. Team passing drill-ten consecutive passes. Divide into even numbers (3 on 3 or 4 on 4) man to man defence in half the court. A team tries to make ten consecutive passes without the other team touching the ball. If they do, that team tries to make ten consecutive passes. 2. Pepper pot-one player is facing 4 others n a group in front of player with two basketballs. Passes are timed so that the individual player is releasing the pass as the other ball is thrown to him or her. 3. Cat and mouse drill-two passers about 4 metres apart with one defender in middle. The defence must try to pressure the pass by closing out and harass the passer. COACHING HINTS YOUTH MEN TRAINING The passer must use fakes and his pivot to protect the ball and make a pass. 4. Speed passing-passing in pairs the players count the number of passes made in 30 seconds. 5. End-zone---Two teams in even numbers try to advance the ball without dribbling (only passing) The attacking team try to advance the ball to the other end of the court and getting the ball across the end line and touching it down (like a rugby try). This helps in teaching the players to find space in front of the ball (becoming a receiver). If the defensive team intercepts the ball they will try to do the same thing by advancing the ball (passing only) to the opposite end. 1 point per try, first to 5. If you have Volleyball court lines on your court this area would be ideal for End- Zone. Thursday November 14 th 8pm-10pm Our 2014 Youth Team will be having an organized training for all interested 2014 players. If you would like to play this is a must to attend. If for any reason you cannot attend you must fill out an exemption form and send it to John Suva. This form can be downloaded from our website.

4 Page 4 Sharks Bite Sutherland have played two games so far and share top spot (We are ahead due to a better for and against) with City of Sydney. Our first game, we played a couple of weeks ago, against Hills, this was a free flowing running game that we won by 15 points. The player of that match was Tony Laarakkers who was a Monster on the boards at both ends of the court and was ably assisted by Simon O Donnell (Coming back from injury) and Michael Rafferty. A telling part of our win was the smothering defence of our guards Rod Procter and Jason Opperman who never stopped running for the whole match. Yesterday, we played Bankstown, this was a tough slow physical game. Bankstown wouldn t allow us to get into our fast up tempo game. With three players injured Don Bickett, Stuart Cole and Tony Laarakkers, we had a tough time on the boards. The stand out players were Simon O Donnell, Paul Lallensak and Luthor Shannon who worked tirelessly on the boards with a special mention to Dos Gleeson who did a great job filling in for our injured players and Don Bickett who, while still recovering from an Achilles problem still came and put some minutes and points on the board. Lastly some fine last second shooting at the end of the quarters and smothering defence by Rod Proctor and Jason Opperman helped seal a hard fought win. The Masters will play at home on Sunday 24th November Come on down and support them. Wayne Jennings Manager
