Hunting News 1 2017 Campaign Preview HTML Source Plain-Text Email Details Warmest Greetings from South Africa! Welcome to our first hunting report of the season! To our old friends, and to all of our new friends, we hope that you will enjoy this little taste of what is to come this season! We would firstly like to say that we had a great 2017 show circuit. It was amazing being back at the shows that we have become regulars at, and an exceptionally exciting experience to attend the show in Las Vegas for the first time. We started off at the DSC Show in Dallas, before heading to Kansas City to see our friends and meet some new hunters in Missouri. We next headed to the show in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Las Vegas and Harrisburg were the next two stops before heading back home to South Africa. Thank you to each and every hunter that stopped by our booth at the shows. We really enjoyed meeting new hunters and seeing so many of our old friends again! Your time and effort is much appreciated! And last, but certainly not least, we would like to thank all of our clients who were kind enough to help us while we were in the States. We are so lucky to have such great friends in the USA who opened their homes to us and hosted a few really great safari parties where we saw many old friends and met a lot of f ll h t It i t ll i d t th k https://us11.admin.mailchimp.com/campaigns/show?id=1126301 1/11
new, fellow hunters. It was amazing to see you all again and we cannot thank you enough for all that you do for us! Without all of you, such a successful trip would not have been possible! And now, without further ado, please enjoy our first hunting report of the season. The Somerby Team in Harrisburg Kelvin and Tina Skaggs Anniversary Safari We were really excited to welcome our first hunter of the season, Kelvin, at the beginning of March, accompanied by his lovely wife, Tina. The couple were celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary and we were honored to be able to share in this special occasion with them. Kelvin hunted for two days with Tina as an observer, where after they enjoyed a tour to the world-renowned Kruger National Park over their anniversary. After this romantic little break, Kelvin continued hunting, taking down some great trophies! https://us11.admin.mailchimp.com/campaigns/show?id=1126301 2/11
Kelvin and Tina relaxing next to the river Kelvin sent us a great report of his kudu hunt, which he says was the most exciting... "There were at least 5 bulls on the piece of ground that we hunted, but we hadn't seen one that was mature enough yet. We were glassing for bulls when Nico spotted one under a tree, at least a mile away. We mounted the truck and drove down some roads to close the gap. When we approached the area, I saw a nice bull heading away from us down into a ravine and out of sight. We continued up the path to the top of the ridge and drove down it to the other side of the ravine and then dismounted. We walked down the top of the ravine glassing the opposite side until we saw the bachelor group ofkkudu bulls feeding in the brush. We started checking out the bulls, but none were shooters. Then, we saw some movement and behind the smaller bulls was a larger one in the thick stuff. Charlie had already set up the shooting stick and said "Get ready, this might the one". As he slowly moved from his hiding place, I could tell it was the bigger bull that I had seen earlier - wide spread with full deep curls that the tips pointed forward. The Grey Ghost quickly vanished again behind some trees and Charlie said "When he walks out, hammer him". It seemed like forever looking through my Leupold until I saw movement again. He was on the move again following the other bulls down the ravine and walked out into an opening on the opposite side about 200 yards out. Charlie gave him a quick whistle that stopped him and I gave him a 180 grain dose of.300 WSM right through the shoulder. He bolted and ran down the canyon and out of sight. We gave him about ten minutes, then we went to trail blood. After picking up the blood trail, he didn't run too far and was laying in the high grass. What an animal... 700 lbs with a thick wide rack: I couldn't ask for anything more!" https://us11.admin.mailchimp.com/campaigns/show?id=1126301 3/11
Well done on this great trophy, Kelvin! Along with his kudu, Kelvin also took down a brilliant blesbuck, a great gemsbuck, a beautiful blue wildebeest, an impressive impala, a stunning springbuck, a willful warthog and a boisterous bush pig. Congratulations on the great haul! https://us11.admin.mailchimp.com/campaigns/show?id=1126301 4/11

We would like to thank Kelvin and Tina for joining us in Africa for this great hunt and anniversary safari. What a great couple! 'Til the next time... Dave and Rose Higbee visit with Somerby Somerby was very excited to have Dave and Rose Higbee over for their very first trip to Africa! Dave and Rose caught a connecting flight to the Eastern Cape after landing in South Africa, where they were met by PH Andre for the adventure of a lifetime! Dave took down some really great trophies and spent some time with PH Andre's family. They had a ball at the beach, and seeing some game at the Addo Elephant National Park! Addo Elephant National Park Dave took down his trophies with his 7mm WSM custom, using 168 grain Nosler AccuBond LR bullets. The bullets performed perfectly, even at closer ranges. Dave gave us a great account of his hunt: "While hunting for kudu, we found a nice group of blue wildebeest, which we stalked for almost an hour. The wildebeest was taken at about 160 yards. The first shot was a little back, but the follow up shot broke its neck." https://us11.admin.mailchimp.com/campaigns/show?id=1126301 6/11
"A waterbuck was not on my list, but Andre pointed out a really great trophy. The stalk took about 30 minutes. The waterbuck only offered a frontal shot and Andre walked me through it perfectly. It literally fell 20 yards from where I shot!" "We were stalking impala when Andre spotted a grey duiker in a clearing... The shot was about 50 yards and was a little back, because I had to shoot around a limb, but Andre said it was perfect. Rascal (Andre's Jack Russell) had him located and down within seconds after the shot." https://us11.admin.mailchimp.com/campaigns/show?id=1126301 7/11
"On the third day, we hunted a different area for bushbuck. We made several drives and a buck came out behind us. We scrambled to get into position for a shot and I dropped a very nice male immediately on a running shot. Less than 50 yards, I believe." "The next day we moved to a different area for kudu. It was a great morning for hunting and we sorted through several kudu before Andre located a very nice bull. The shot was 128 yards. The bull travelled about 100 yards before it expired. Rascal was the man again and found the kudu!" https://us11.admin.mailchimp.com/campaigns/show?id=1126301 8/11
"Now on to the impala that evening... Andre had spotted some nice males in an area that we were travelling in and out of. After two or three attempts to get in a good shooting position, the male that Andre had picked out of the group presented a 200 yard broadside shot. That was all that was needed to collect the impala." "The following day we moved to yet another different area to find gemsbuck. Andre spotted a small group with a failed attempt to get close enough to even take a look at them. We moved a bit and Andre spotted a pair and the one to the right was a shooter. We got into position rather quickly for about a 180 yard shot and the https://us11.admin.mailchimp.com/campaigns/show?id=1126301 9/11
g p q y y gemsbuck went down quickly." "We next went in search of blesbuck... It didn't take Andre long to locate a shooter, but he wanted to cover the area to make certain that we were going to get a chance at a great trophy. We eventually came back to the first group that we had spotted earlier in the day. Andre walked me through about a 150 yard shot. Although the first shot was fatal, Andre said to put another round in him to finish." Thank you to Dave and Rose for joining us on this most memorable safari!
