They play Saturday and return home for a week of final fall exams, hoping for similiar success. In the season opening 77-52 win on the road at Kennesaw, it was 6-foot-2 Chan Harris that led the way with 22 points and 11 rebounds while senior veteran forward Danyiell McKeller fired in 22 points. In the loss to No. 10 Florida State, McKeller s 21 points and Brittany Graham s 10 led the battle. In the win over Murray State, junior Angelique Burtts triple-double led the way, with McKeller adding 21 more points. In the Troy win, McKeller had 18 more and Harris 10, while Crystal Johnson had 10 assists and eight points. The Panthers new surprise is junior college All-America transfer wing Angelique Burtts, photo right. The 6-footer is leading the team in assists (22) and is No. 30 in the NCAA, in steals (12, No. 28 NCAA) and is averaging 12 points a game. A vital cog for Georgia State is sophomore point guard Crystal Johnson. The Gainesville, Fla., native led the CAA in assists last year and ranked No. 20 in the nation with her 5.53 per game average. The All-CAA rookie has 19 assists (4.8) on the season, is scoring 9.5 points a game and has seven steals. Senior guard Brittany Graham notched her career 100th three-point basket in the opener and added two on Sunday after leading the team with 40 last year in her first season at Georgia State. Georgia State begins its fifth season in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), a league that has placed three or more team in postseason tournaments for four straight years as well as multiple NCAA bids the past three years.

She has averaged 21 points in those three recent ACC games. sour turn for the Panthers from the solid 9-4 start after she injured her knee and missed over a month of action. McKeller was averaging nearly 15 points a game last year in that fast start of her junior year. McKeller s last double-figure game was the 41st of her career as she sits at 897 career points and 488 rebounds. She has that confidence back now that made her a 1,585-point scorer in North Carolina prep ball (Westover High in Fayetteville, N.C.) as she averaged 17.5 as a senior in high school. McKeller has topped the 20-point mark nine times in her career. Mathematically, she needs just 3 more points for 900 in her career, needs just 12 rebounds for 500 in her career and just made her 100th career steal on Saturday. But, last year s season took a THREE OF A KIND? NCAA STAT RANKINGS The Panthers will attempt to win a third straight game, which would equal last year s longest winning streak. In 2008-09, Georgia State produced a pair of three-game win streaks. The last time the Panthers had a four-game win streak was in a seven-game roll back in the 2006-07 season. Three come from junior college and one from high school. The early class for 2010 includes JaQuavia Couch, 5-6 guard from Saginaw, Mich (Daytona State College); Leteicia Davenport, 6-0 forward from Gainesville, Ga. (North Hall High and Sante Fe CC); Briana Shepherd, 6-0 forward from Birmingham, Ala. (Erwin High); and Tracie Sneed, a 6-0 wing from Jacksonville, Fla. (Andrew Jackson High and Sante Fe CC). Couch is averaging 17.5 this season in JUCO and led her team in both assists and steals last year...davenport set the local North Hall High School record for most points (1,937) from her post position...shepherd is a top scorer in prep ball in Birmingham and is also a star volleyball player...sneed was first-team All-Conference as a JUCO freshman, now averaging 17.5 this season with a pair of 20-point games. The wing 6-0 guard made 33 treys last year as a freshman. The Panthers hope to add another couple recruits in the spring signing period and do have some verbal agreements to fill those slots. EARLY SEASON NOTEBOOK The Panthers are shooting 45.3% from the field for the season, knocking down 108 of their 238 shots. Chan Harris leads with 54.3% on 19-of-35. Georgia State s early season schedule has seen them be the only loss by Kennesaw State (2-1), while Florida State moved to 4-0 with the win over GSU. Murray State (4-1) suffered its first loss to GSU. Troy sat at 3-1 before facing the Panthers. Georgia State s defense has kept opponents below their average. KSU is averaging 69 points in its two wins, but GSU held them to 52 points. FSU was averaging 83 points a game in its three wins before GSU held the Seminoles to 66 points...murray State arrived with its scoring average of 80.8 points a contest and scored eight below that...troy was held 20 points below its season average. The Panthers finished No. 10 in the nation last year in steals (11.8 per game). This year, the defense has forced 70 turnovers (17.5 per game) and made 44 steals (11 per game). And, that is without one of the team s leaders in steals, Jylisa Williams.

Henry already holds the record for most career wins at State with 233 and has won 20 or more games in a season four times. She has 291 career wins at her three schools. She has been a Conference Coach of the Year three times and has been named the Georgia Division I Coach of the Year three times by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. Henry has led State to five conference regular season championships and three conference tournament championships. Her State teams have earned three NCAA bids and one WNIT bid. She is an inductee in the Class of 2006 Georgia Sports Hall of Fame and the Class of 2005 University of Tennessee Lady Vol Hall of Fame. The top returning bandits from last year s team are the sophomore guards, Jylisa Williams with 71 steals and Crystal Johnson with 61 thefts. Williams tied the school record for a game with nine. Post player Chan Harris used her wide wing span to come away with 37 more steals in the full-court traps. The Panthers 354 steals last year were 17 shy of the 1980-81 team s alltime best of 371 steals in a season. SHARING The Ball Passing is another integral part of Coach Henry s plans as last year s team was No. 2 in the CAA in assists and No. 74 in the nation. State had 241 assists, an average of 14 per game. Pass first, dribble second, encourages getting the ball to the open teammate. They lead the CAA this year with 18.3 assists per game and are No. 11 in the CAA. Point guard Crystal Johnson led the CAA with 166 assists (5.53) and ranked No. 20 in the NCAA. Fellow All-CAA freshman guard Jylisa Wiliams made 61 assists to give the backcourt a combined 227 passes that led directly to the baskets.
