In this issue: 4-H Hippology and Horse Bowl Practices 4-H Tractor Safety Program to Begin ISO Teens for Career Explorations Conference Planning Team 4-H Public Presentation Day and Registration 4-H County Fair Schedule 2019 Dairy Discovery NYS Farm Bureau Scholarships Now Available 4-H Animal Project Certificate Due Dates 4-H Calendar of Events HIPPOLOGY & HORSE BOWL PRACTICES 4-H Hippology/Horse Bowl practices will begin Friday, Jan. 25 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the CCE conference room. There will be a practice every Friday night at this time up to the contest date (March 9). Any 4-H horse project member that would like to try out for the Hippology or Horse Bowl teams should plan to attend these practices. 4-H TRACTOR SAFETY PROGRAM TO BEGIN The 4-H Tractor and Machinery Operations Training and Certification program will begin Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2019 in the auditorium of the Ronald E. Dougherty County Office Building at 7:00 p.m. The cost of the program is $35.00 for non 4-H members and $25.00 for 4-H members. Registration forms and brochures can be picked up in advance from the CCE Office. Current 4-H members should send an email to Jody to register. Parents/guardians must attend the first meeting and are encouraged to attend the remaining classes. Participants (with a parent) can register at the orientation meeting but should plan to arrive early to complete the required forms before the class starts. Students must complete all classes before receiving a certificate. The training program will enable youth 14 and 15 years of age, who wish to work as a hired employee for someone other than a parent or legal guardian, and operate a farm tractor that is 20hp or greater, to obtain the U.S. Department of Labor s hazardous Occupations Order in Agriculture (HOOA) certification. The program will provide participants with the required 24 hours of instruction, and it will include group discussions, demonstrations, field trips, hands-on activities, independent study, and field assignments.

During the educational phase of the program, youth will receive instruction in the safe operation of agricultural tractors and related machinery. Certification upon completion of the educational phase of the program will include a written examination, a tractor and machinery skills demonstration, and a tractor and machinery driving course. Participants must receive a minimum passing score of 70% in each test area to be issued a certificate of completion. The program is available to anyone 12 years of age and older, however only individuals 14 and older will be able to operate equipment and receive a certificate of completion. Individuals over age 15 are encouraged to attend as well. The top six participants will be eligible to participate in the New York State 4-H Tractor Operator s Contest at the annual Empire Farm Days event. Dates for the remaining classes which will be held at various farm and equipment dealers in Tioga County are: Tuesdays: February 12, 26, March 5, 12 and 19 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. each night. Three classes will be held on Saturdays, February 23, and March 2 from 10:00 a.m. to noon, and March 23 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. LOOKING FOR TEENS FOR CAREER EXPLORATIONS CONFERENCE PLANNING TEAM We re looking for creative and dedicated youth leaders who are excited about helping their peers explore careers and Cornell to join the 2019 Career Explorations Conference planning team. Teens should be at least 16 years old and have participated in Career Explorations in the past. Focus Assistant teen leaders will help plan, implement, and evaluate the success of the 4-H Career Explorations Conference. The Conference Planning Team anticipates selecting 30 Focus Assistants. Please contact Melissa if you are interested in applying! 4-H PUBLIC PRESENTATION DAY AND REGISTRATION The Tioga Co. 4-H Public Presentation Day event will be held Saturday, Feb. 16 in the Tioga Co. This year s topic is Dairy Herd Health and Management. This workshop is open to 4-H members 14 to 19 years old. The cost is $50 per youth and the registration deadline is Tuesday, March 18. There is a maximum of 65 openings. The fee includes activities, materials, dinner Friday night and lunch on Saturday. Registration forms must be signed by a 4-H staff person. The cost for chaperones is $15 who must also complete an online registration form. Having a good herd health program and managing risk effectively leads directly to a healthier herd, both physically and financially. Dairy Discovery will help youth to understand, observe and participate in technical skill training related to such topics as: Biosecurity in your herd and diseases; Linear Type Evaluation; Managing Risk in Fresh Cows; Reproduction; Do my cows wear Good Sneakers ; Animal Welfare; and DHI records 2019 NY FARM BUREAU SCHOLARSHIPS NOW AVAILABLE Information and applications for the NY Farm Bureau Scholarship are now available online at: www.nyfb.org or by calling 1-800-342-4143. Applicants must be: 2019 graduating high school seniors who will continue their education to prepare for a career in some way connected to the diverse agricultural industry. Live or work on a farm or be involved with agriculture via any avenue. Family Farm Bureau membership or Student Farm Bureau membership is required and may accompany application. Complete application packets must be returned to NY Farm Bureau in Albany no later than March 1, 2019. More information can be found on the website.
