Page 2 PRINCIPAL S MESSAGE An interesting winter with a combination of snow and then followed with a rainstorm. Looks like confused global warming. We are excited to announce that our Renovation project has gone to tender. Bids will be coming in and we still hold hope that we will begin work this spring. We will keep everyone posted as we know more. Our senior basketball teams are getting ready for the playoffs and our junior basketball teams are preparing for their season-ending tournament. Good luck to our basketball teams and thanks to our coaches who have volunteered countless hours with our athletes. Cheerleading is in the middle of their competition season and doing exceptionally well, they finished first in Zones, a great accomplishment! Great job by coaches and athletes! Our very own Canada Cup is in full swing as class versus class in floor hockey is taking up the gymnasium at lunch. The winning class will take on the teacher team! Our Recreational Academy class has just completed their second trip to Banff from a three-day winter wonderland trip. Two groups of students left our school for these three day trips. Thanks to Mr. Mentz, Mr. Witchsen and Miss. Reiser who have spent six days on the road. Our Hockey Academy will have a Shadow day for anyone interested in test-driving the academy. This will occur on March 4 th and if interested please contact Mr. Fiorillo. Our Academy will be hosting an open house here on March 18 th at 7:30 p.m. in the Library. Teachers are getting in those last minute assignments and quizzes as they get ready to put together the report cards. Report cards are going home on March 20th. We invite our students and their parents to come to parent-teacher interviews on March 24 and 25. HomeLogic will be offline after February 27 th as teachers start imputing report card comments. Once report cards go home we will reopen HomeLogic. Looking to the future we will have grade sixes from our neighborhood schools visiting on March 12 th. This is the lead-up to our open house on March 19th at 7:00 p.m. If you know of new families moving into our area, encourage them to give us a visit. Our students art has been on display in Edmonton City Hall for an exhibition with all proceeds going to ihuman. Congratulations to our artist and their teacher Mrs. Henker. Congratulations to Mr. Herman and Mr. Huynh who celebrated ten years of service to our district. Also to Mr. Demuynck who celebrated twenty years of service. Mike Tod, Principal
Page 3 Cheer News Our dynamic and talented cheerleaders proved their might on February 14 at City Zones. We brought home the banner for first place and ensured our spot for provincials on March 28. Our competition in Red Deer on February 21 was just as exciting with another first place win. NEWS FROM PARENT COUNCIL Basketball Shorts Sr. Girls Basketball won bronze at the Gibbons Invitational. Ainsley Coles was the player of the game in the first game for shutting down their best shooter. We ended up winning that game in OT, with Cameron Denney getting the game winning basket. Ava Johnson was the player of the game in the second game, and Wyllow Townsend made our first three pointer of the year. In the bronze medal game, we were down 16-8 and the girls pulled together as a team, clawing back and winning the game 28-22. We were short 6 players and the girls couldn't have done it without the help of Taylor Harrison and two junior players, Naomi Lauman and Samantha Boutin. Ava Johnson played an amazing second half, making every shot she took, no matter where she was. Once again, Ainsley Coles shut down their best shooter, while Kamryn Bordian played well all over the floor, getting the player of the game in the bronze medal game. Hello WD Cuts Families, just an update from Parent Council We are expecting to receive the casino proceeds into our bank account in the next month. We will advise as to the exact amount when we receive this deposit. All of the casino proceeds will be going towards the school renovations. Everyone is welcome to attend our next meeting which is April 20, 2015 @ 7:00 pm in the staff room.
Page 4 REC Banff Trip The REC trip was extraordinary, we went snowshoeing, cross country skiing, skating, and we even went to Sunshine Ski Resort. We stayed at a five star hostel in Banff National Park, the rooms were perfect in size and we all had our essentials that were necessary for our trip. On the way there and back we had the pleasure of travelling on a Greyhound bus which was a lot more comfortable than a regular school bus if you know what I mean. It was an awesome experience! Page 5 Guitar Concert Congratulations to Mr. Demuynck's guitar students for putting on a great evening of music with so much variety - everything from the stage rattling distorted snarl of Metallica's One to the beautifully melodic Songbird by Fleetwood Mac. We have some truly talented musicians Art Exhibit Some of the art students from WD Cuts had their pieces showcased at an Art Exhibit in Edmonton s City Hall from February 26-March 1. Art was auctioned off for $150.00 per piece and all proceeds were donated to ihuman. Hair Mascure Touques off to these three Crusaders, Aiden McGaw, Kieran Baxter and Kailee Cooper, who collectively raised over $4500 for cancer research by participating in this year's Hair Masacure.

March Page 8 Rec Academy The roller coaster that has been our winter continued through February. Fabulous blue sky days allowed us to glide around the Poundmaker cross country skiing tracks; underwater hockey kept us gasping and thrashing at Fountain Park pool; the rocks slid down the ice at Edmonton Garrison as curling was added to our repertoire. The highlight for many of our Rec students was our Banff trip. While the Banff site area was more spring than winter-like, we found our snow and ice in Lake Louise. A day of cross country skiing on the Moraine Lake trails, skating on Lake Louise and snowshoeing under Mount Fairview made for a ravenous group. All one could eat at Boston Pizza followed by a hot springs soak rounded out the day. Exceptional snow at Sunshine Village kept our skiers and snowboarders happy on the third day. It was a great trip! Please have a close look at our March waivers as you make the entries on your fridge calendar. We will not be going quietly into spring break!
