WELLOW HOUSE SCHOOL Weekly Newsletter 19th October 2018 LOYALTY This week at School, we have been thinking very carefully about what Loyalty is and what it takes to be a loyal person. I invited Mr Williams to introduce this important and final theme of this half-term in Monday s assembly. Mr Williams encouraged the children to share their ideas about what loyalty meant to them. Typically, our children had some fantastic ideas, which very quickly confirmed their own loyalty to friends, family and our wonderful school. One person, who I have been delighted to welcome back recently is Ms Isabelle Buckland, who as a former Wellow pupil, has returned to our school to help and support in both Prep and Pre Prep. I would like to take this opportunity to formally thank Isabelle for kind help and support and for remaining so loyal to Wellow House School. I am delighted to let parents know that our recent Open Morning is proving to have been very successful. With increased foot fall on the day, the school was both vibrant and busy. This wouldn t have been possible without the loyalty and determination given so freely by our pupils and yourselves. There are three new starters after half-term and five further children joining after Christmas. It has certainly been heart-warming to enrol two new children of former Wellow pupils. This morning, Pre Prep delivered a fantastic Special Assembly to parents and grandparents. We gave a snapshot of the rich and varied learning which has taken place throughout the term. The children sang, performed as soloists, read poetry and even did the Dinosaur stomp! Well done everyone and thank you. Teachers and pupils have confirmed that loyalty must be at the heart of our school and embedded in our day-to-day learning, both in and out of the classroom. It only leaves me to thank everyone for their support across this term, which has paved the way to ensuring a very bright and rejuvenated future for our very unique school. Have a lovely half term. Miss K Lamb Headmistress

Dear Parents, Happy Birthday to all children who celebrate their birthdays over half term.

Above: Year 5 are always busy during their verbal reasoning lessons. Right: Mila and Tifara enjoy using the bikes in Pre Prep.

ask your children about our 7 Billion Ideas afternoon #roar2018 Congratulations to our certificate winners this week.

We will welcome any more consent forms that have yet to be submitted, children not at Wellow House School are also very welcome to join in. The information letter is attached, please now email any new forms direct to Mrs Nichols. Email: lorraine.nichols@wellowhouseschool.co.uk YEAR 5 BIKEABILITY LEVEL 1 COURSE - CANCELLED Wellow House School's application has not been selected for the Bikeability training programme this year, so the course will not be taking place after Half Term on Wednesday 7th November. We apologise if any children may be disappointed, they will still have a fantastic outdoor pursuits trip to look forward to in the Spring term, cycling approximately 15 miles along the Monsal Trail. In place of the Bikeability course, we have been able to arrange the new U11 Games fixtures versus Westbourne.

YEAR 5 MONSAL TRAIL CYCLE RIDE If your child is not a confident cyclist over a significant distance, it would be extremely useful if they could practise some cycling over the next few months. Please speak to Ms Beldon if you have any questions or concerns. A review for whether assistance may be required for your child to participate in the Monsal Trail cycle ride may be considered closer to when the outdoor pursuits trip takes place. ST HUGHS SWIMMING GALA MONDAY 12TH NOVEMBER We have yet to receive the detailed information for the Gala. We will announce the Swimming squad as soon as we know the race programme. HIGHFIELDS CROSS COUNTRY MEETING - THURSDAY 22ND NOVEMBER The next U11 & U9 Cross Country meeting at Highfields in Newark is taking place on a change of date to the original term calendar. We can only take 4 runners for each team and selection will be confirmed after Half Term. We encourage all the children in the Cross Country squad to go for (supervised!) runs during Half Term if possible, the Highfields race distances are U9 1200m and U11 1800m. We recommend running a slightly longer distance, to help your child build up their endurance for the full race. U9 and U8 Hockey v Ranby House - Wednesday 10th October All the matches were played indoors and the girls quickly realised during the warm up that this was a very different playing surface to grass.

For the first game, the U9 girls adapted amazingly to the faster surface, using slightly different techniques to stop, dribble and push the ball, as well as coping with being rotated to play in both defence and attack positions. Both teams had their fair share of possession and shots on goal. After trailing 0-1 at half-time, Wellow House remained determined and were rewarded with two well-deserved goals to win the game 1-2. Our U9 girls played their socks off! Goal scorers: Bonnie Walton, Marigold Saxelby The U8 girls watched the U9s play first and for a team with very little hockey experience, the U8s amazed Mrs Nichols and Mrs Doney with their observations and accurate feedback to the U9s. The U8s had another successful training match, each week the girls show stronger skills and are starting to spread out more with fewer reminders. We hope the U8s continue to build on their confidence, so they may play some matches with the U9 girls after Half Term. U13 Hockey v Lincoln Minster School - Wednesday 17th October Wellow had a tough match and the first half was particularly defensive, but all the girls battled extremely hard to keep the score 0-0 at half time. Lincoln Minster kept up the pressure in the 2nd half and were eventually rewarded with two well struck goals in quick succession. Wellow House did not let their heads drop and had chances to score, but were not quite able to execute their efforts on goal. The final score was 2-0 to Lincoln Minster. All our girls worked hard for the full game and Celia A was a well- deserved Player of the Match as our calm and composed GK. A special mention must also go to Esme D for competing in her first full game of Hockey today - a great achievement Esme, well done! U11 Hockey v Lincoln Minster School & Grantham Prep - Wednesday 17th October The U11 team enjoyed their best afternoon of hockey this season. The girls worked as a team, getting the ball out to the wings and attacking with speed and determination. Grace worked very hard for her first festival as goal keeper, confidently kicking the ball clear of the goal. The team missed Bryony and Anna; however, Marigold, Bonnie and Izzy showed great tenacity and really helped to support the team. Player of the Match went to Izzy, who also scored a great goal. Elizabeth was chosen as Player of the Match for the other two matches. Well done Under 11s.
