President s Pen AFTER Graham Reynolds EASTER EGGS?? Why easter eggs I hear you ask? Well Rowville and easter eggs both have a shell and look good however once cracked there is not much inside. We won the match, we won the day and we went home with respect for each other intact. Well done. What a huge weekend for the club. Now 7 zip as two senior teams remain undefeated. That in itself is solid gold. Saturday saw the first hosting of ladies day and whilst numbers lower than expected those who made the effort to support this function had a great day. Well done to John and Linda for putting it all together. It was a big turn out for our annual super draw raffle on Sunday with a great result for the club. It was good to see our seniors giving their full support the LJFC games whilst enjoying a relaxing afternoon in the clubrooms. Then some great cash prizes won by some great club blokes. Congratulations to all our winners and a big thank you to Garry Skelton for seeing this project through to such a good money spinner and social event for the club. Don t forget the boat cruise this Sunday is all go. See Roachy to book and pay as this is event is not to be missed. My quote for this week. Winners are grinners the rest can make their own arrangements. GO FALCONS. Graham Page 2 The Flanker is prepared and edited by Gerald Toohey (aka Fathertoosa) email lilydale@efl.org.au Page 31

Rowville had a real crack at us today. We stood firm and worked our processes well. The good thing about this game was that it highlighted some areas we can improve upon. In what was an important game for us to win to keep in touch with the top 3 sides, we were slow to get going in the first quarter and battled to match Rowville s intensity and momentum. In a low scoring match we were not able to loft in order to put together consecutive goals. We will need to lift in order to put together a good performance next week against Waverley Blues. 1 st Darren s Flower Award: John McKay 2 nd Cafe Kinetic Award: Tom Herbert 3 rd Flanker Award: Jay Pumpa Calcutta Player: John McKay Owner: TBA 1.0 2.2 2.4 5.5.35 ROWVILLE 2.6 4.7 9.8 11.11.77 Page 4 Page 29

We must remember that being the hunted team each week we will be tested and must be mentally strong and not be sucked in by the opposition. During the long break we managed to refocus and played good footy in the 3 rd quarter so that we were in control of the game at ¾ time and eventually won by 27 points in difficult conditions. emember Keep working hard for each other - Stay positive Be more disciplined Share the footy. 1 st: Mooroolbark and Mt Evelyn Bendigo Community Bank Award: Dayne Hammacher 2 nd : The International Award: Sam Horsley Calcutta Player: Dayne Hammacher Owner: Adam Mowat Page 28 Page 5

Our skill in kicking and running to space we did not use We panicked and just bombed away and turned the ball over. These are the things that we practice every night at training and must be use in every game we play. What a great game, we know that we have the talent to match it with any side in the competition. COACH S COMMENTS: A hard fought game that we had in our control for the majority of the first three quarters slipped through our fingers today. We had all the play and attacked in the final term time and time again to only be rewarded with 4 points, which easily could have been four goals. The boys should be proud of their efforts. The whole team contributed and we looked the better team on the day but as they say bad kicking is bad football. The boys should hold their heads high Knox are a very good team and we let them win. We will learn from this and get them next time. Next week we have Norwood at Norwood. Bring it on... The Flanker M.BURT Page 7

MATCH There is an old saying What goes out on the field, stays on the field. Well apparently the Rowville Committeemen don t believe in the old adage because they boycotted the Lilydale half-time entertainment apparently because of what happened in the Reserves game. The half time entertainment is meant to be a forum to meet your fellow honoraries and share your love for the game in a convivial atmosphere. It was a bit disappointing that Rowville forget that with their lack of attendance despite repeated invitations. Planking has come to Lilydale Football Club. After the ladies day on Saturday, we had our first plank on the bar by a lady who wants to remain anonymous. See the picture on page 20. Note in the picture the new signage behind the bar kindly donated by Boags Draught. If we sell off all the available advertising space on the board, we will be well infront. Go Boags. Birthday wishes galore this week. Happy Birthday to James Howell who turned 25 on May 30. Russell Bates 51 on May 31. Matt Wright 28 and Stephen Cruickshank 30 on June 1. Jimmy Shore 25, Rhys Barker 20 and Ashraf Davies 20 on June 4 and last but not least, Stephen McDonald 33 on June 5 th. Have a good one fellas! The Beetlejuice table was pretty full on Saturday night. We welcomed our Irish friend Dermott to the table as well as Bob Bakey and Wheels. The hamburgers at the Super Raffle were delicious. Well cooked by Dean Clements. The Toohey dogs say thanks too as they got the leftovers. Woof. The Under 14s and Under 16s provided great entertainment for the crowd gathered in the social rooms for the Super Raffle. First Ash Beckwith s U14 side completed a 136 point turnaround against Vermont Purple in Round 1 to win by 39 points and then the U16s lost by 3 points to top of the ladder Wantirna South after leading. SEASON GOALS: Jake Gilbert 28, Jayden Wilson 20, Pat Klep 18, Corey Berntsen 13 MATCH : Well what a win a 136 point turnaround from round 1 against the second on the ladder Vermont. We got out of the blocks well dominating the first quarter with great intensity from Dell, Toohey and Berntsen. We continued to outplay the opposition in the second but due to poor kicking (1.7) we were outscored. Halse, Del Biondo and Mutsaers were working well together down back. The third was a bit of a struggle as we lost Fraser and Joel to injuries, 2 players who put more pressure on the opposition than any others, but the boys continued to work hard and we had a 14 point lead going into the last term. Vermont came hard in the last quarter kicking a couple of early goals but then the boys responded well kicking the last 6 goals with Klepy finally finding the big sticks and Pierce putting a couple through to help us run out 39 point winners. A great win guys. Next week at home to Glen Waverly Rovers may be a tougher task than we are expecting with what looks like a few of our key players out injured and away. After a mid year review and a disappointing couple of weeks, we looked back to last year to see what made us a tight and competitive team against all the strong division 1 teams. During the week we had a big focus on tackling, 1%'s and hardness at the contest. The boys then came out and put their first four quarter effort in for the whole year. We pressured, tackled and hunted in numbers all day and eventually came away with a great 22 point win. The most pleasing thing was that it was against a top four team and shows the boys we can match it with the best. Well done boys, great work. From the outset the boys looked a little outclassed and outsized, but managed to hang in the game with some good passages of play with a goal (down) being the difference up to ¾ time. Lachlan Baxter went to one of Vermont s playmakers and shut him down and Tom Whitaker into the ruck gave us some drive in the third quarter. After ¾ time the boys responded well to get a 15 point lead with less than five minutes to go. But, a couple of centre breaks from Vermont and lack of manning up meant Vermont were able to steal the game on the last kick of the day. It was certainly the most exciting game for the year with a somewhat disappointing scoreline result. The boys should be very proud of their efforts as a team and the result does show that we have and will keep improving as the season goes on. Best Runner on ground: Jodie Reinecke!! But in saying that the smile on Peter Skewes face is priceless after beating a finals contender on their home ground. Congratulations to Pete, Jason and all the boy s on a fantastic win. A big thankyou to Stephen Cruickshank, James Roach and Ash Davies who came down to the Under 15 s and took training during the week. The mud slide was fantastic and the boys got a lot out of the session. It was also great to see Marcus Hottes who was at the Under 16 s game and addressed the players at half time with some very good sound advice on how he goes about his game. It is fantastic to see the senior club doing well with the Colts and Senior s sitting on top of the ladder so don t forget to get down and support the boys. Cheers Graeme Donald.
