May 2017 The Point Hi and welcome to the May 2018 edition of the Point Well the weather gods were against us for this year s Cucksey Shield/Fisher Cup tournament and after a warm up or for some a few games completed, the rain settled in. So with no rain day planned for this year, the tournament was cancelled but on a slightly positive note Sunnyhills was last year s winner of the Cucksey Shield so we get to look after it for another year! While the summer tennis may have finished, if you are still looking to have a hit over the winter then we have good news. A number of members looking to carry on social/club tennis are intending to hold it on a fortnightly basis from 3pm till 5pm starting this coming Sunday 6 th May. The BBQ will be fired up, so come down and join in. An update from last month where I indicated about building work in the ladies toilet (shower cubicle & wash basin), along with the trimming of the hedge behind courts 3 & 4. By the time you get this newsletter hopefully the hedge work has been completed or close to it, and the work on the ladies shower and wash basin now scheduled to start next week. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause while this necessary work is carried out. Finally, a date I would like you to put in your diary is Sunday 17 th June 2018 as this will be when the Betty Fyers Tournament, AGM and Senior Prize Giving are being held. As with each year there will be some vacancies and a committee change should be seen as a positive as it brings new thoughts and views and so I would encourage club members to consider putting your name forward for roles you may be interested in or willing to assist. As per clause 9.2 of our constitution The Management Committee shall be elected at the Annual General Meeting of the Club and shall hold office until the next succeeding Annual General Meeting of the Club. As such all positions on the committee become vacant at the AGM, and while a number of the incumbent committee members are intending to stand for re-election, there will be some roles looking to be filled. One of these roles will be President as I am intending to stand down from this role due to a number of other commitments. If you are interested in any role please talk to one of the committee. Elected roles on the committee: President Treasurer Secretary Club Captain (max 2) Committee (6) Michael Petersen Club President 1

SENIORS Thanks to all the players entering the annual Fisher Cup and Cucksey Shield event this season. Unfortunately we got rained off, but on the bright side Sunnyhills are still the holders of the Cucksey Shield!! Well done to everyone who played in one or more of the 13 senior interclub teams this season, and to all the super subs when needed! We managed to retain our women s promotion grades for Caro Bowl and Caro Bowl reserve women! Coming up on the 30 th June is the Quiz Night more info to come soon. Reminder to captains if you could all please return your season balls to the club for recycling into social events and the junior programme thanks. Kind Regards Aaron Trembath & Gillian Summers 027 233 7358 022 641 4500 MIDWEEK LADIES Private Court Tournament For the 3 rd year in a row the Midweek Ladies Private Court Tournament was rained off but we made the most of it anyway by hosting a High Tea at Frances Bostock s lovely home. A big thank you to Frances for opening up her gorgeous abode, the Committee Ladies for providing the amazingly scrumptious High Tea and the attendees who didn t let a bit of rain spoil their fantastic morning out. Totara Hospice The Midweek Ladies have generously decided to donate $200 to this worthy cause in conjunction with a joint fundraiser between Howick, Cockle Bay and Pakuranga Tennis Clubs to be held on Wednesday, 9 th May. 2

Summer Interclub The Summer Interclub season finished at the end of March and the results are in! Congratulations to the following teams: SH1 second place: Nicola Troughear, Margaret Michell, Ismay Barry and Tracey Walmsley SH3 second place: Lyn O Kane, Kathy Clark, Maryanne Wright, Allie Robinson and Simone Young SH4 second place: Jo Downs, Vicki Hill, Frances Bostock, Liz Johnson and Alex Robertson SH5 third place: Joan Ronson, Jenny Jost and Joy Ward Winter Outdoor Interclub The Winter season of Interclub began this week (even though it still feels like summer!) and we are pleased to announce we have 4 teams entered into the competition. Thank you to Michelle Braid who is the Convener and organiser. Good luck to all the players and enjoy the season. Midweek Ladies Doubles Club Champs The date for this competition has been changed to Tuesday, 5 th June and I am accepting entries now. Play will begin at 9:15am. AGM The Midweek Ladies AGM is scheduled for Wednesday, 23 rd May at 11:00am and attendees are asked to bring a small plate to share. The Prize Giving will be deferred until Soup Day as the Club Champs were postponed. Soup Day Mark your diaries for 4 th July as this annual event is not to be missed, especially if you like hot soup. Cost is $10 and we will be incorporating Prize Giving on the day along with a few raffles. Kind regards Laura Beattie Midweek Ladies Convener 027 223 5399 JUNIORS It s pleasing to see so many of our juniors continuing their tennis training over this coming term... we know how passionate Gabriel is for our players to continue their development throughout the winter seasons and it seems his enthusiasm for tennis as an 'all year' sport has rubbed off on quite a few of our young players the hard work will pay off come Summer! 3

Our Junior Doubles Champs played back in April was another great day at the club, we had the sun shining and plenty of family support on the decks. Thank you and well done to all the players who got involved and congratulations to our winners. Results were as follows: JUNIOR CLUB CHAMPS DOUBLES Girls Doubles 12 & Under Winner: Marissa Jones & Isabelle Bannister Runner up: Ayaana Patel & Neela Patel Mixed Doubles 16 & Under Winner: Angus Tucker & Meg Downs Runner up: Axel Bostock & Samiya Patel Girls 14/16 & Under Winner: Jasmin Manning & Lucy Sutton Runner up: Meg Downs & Samiya Patel Boys Doubles 12 & Under Winner: Marcus Abbott & Max Graham Runner up: Mattia Chiesa & Ryan Johnson Boys Doubles 16 & Under Winner: Axel Bostock & Jack Bardin Runner up: Angus Tucker & Heath Meek MARBLES TOURNAMENT & PRIZE GIVING The final event for our Juniors will be our annual Marbles Tournament which will be held on Sunday June 10 th... this is to be a fun family day of tennis Juniors grab an adult to make your doubles entry and register yourself to play! A flyer with more details will be emailed out shortly. Please can you advise ASAP if you are intending to play. If you need an adult let us know and we can sort this out. Junior Prize Giving will follow the Marbles Tournament at 4:30pm. All juniors are welcome to attend, especially our interclub players and club champ winners. We look forward to seeing you at the club on Sunday June 10 th. Amanda Pritchard Junior Convener 027 495 8438 COACHES CORNER As we're heading to a new (winter) term, it is great to see plenty of our juniors carrying on playing and keeping up with their training so they better prepared come next summer. Although tennis (in New Zealand) is a summer sport, it s certainly not the best option to stop during such a long period of time. 4

There's still spaces in some of the Kiwi Tennis groups and if you have any questions in terms of where to sign up, or about your child's tennis options, please don t hesitate to drop me an email. Also, plenty of our younger juniors will be competing (not just training) throughout the winter, so hopefully we'll see some great results during this period. Regarding prize giving for Junior Singles & Doubles club champs and others Sunnyhills Tennis prizes (like most improved player, etc) this will be held in June. More info on the above Junior section. This will be on same day as the adult/child 'Marbles' tournament (don t necessarily need to be related). Cardio-tennis will also start on the 2 nd week of the term and a separate email will be sent shortly with days/times. Flick me an email if you re interested to come along for FREE to try it out. Adult coaching is also available to work on those small adjustments needed and preparation for next interclub season. Finally, if I don t see you during the winter, have a good one. Kind Regards Gabriel Hernandez Head Coach 021 0259 9086 LOST PROPERTY There are a number of lost property items at the clubrooms that have been there some time. Below are photos of everything and they have been placed on a table inside the clubrooms for collection if anyone recognises anything that is theirs. Anything not collected by the 20 th May will be donated to charity. 5
