CELEBRATING 11 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Tampa Bay Chapter- American Singles Golf Association September 2004 Message from the President Writing isn't hard. It isn't any harder than ditch-digging. Patrick Dennis Writing is easy. All you do is stare at a blank sheet of paper until drops of blood form on your forehead. Gene Fowler, 1890-1960, American Journalist, Biographer Well, here I sit, waiting for some idea about golf to pop into my head so I can submit it to our ever-efficient newsletter operative, Phyllis Johnson. She has this polite way of notifying all the board members that newsletter time is due, but with an underlying notion that if we don t get our articles in on time, some goon will be knocking on our doors in short order. Today is my deadline day and I am in a funk. Alas, I have become a victim of writer s block. In the past, particular months have provided me with fodder for articles, such as February s relationship with St. Valentine s Day, but all September has to offer is the Autumnal Equinox what can I say about that? It s not much cooler, we still have about 90 days of hurricane season left, and golf rates are about to go up for the seasonal snowbird migration. I just cannot think of anything positive to write about except for our September golf outing at Crescent Oaks. I predict great weather this year compared with the meteorological fiasco last year. Remember that for our November outing last year at Crescent Oaks, meteorologists predicted sunny skies and temps in the high 50 s well, cloudy, windy, and a 49-degree day just wasn t a good golf day. This year, we will play in weather that allows us to fully appreciate that wonderful course. So please sign up for this outing as this is a private course and not generally available to us. -JR Hurayt, President Sorry Charley!!! Charley did not stop the Tampa ASGA outing on August 15th! Despite the hurricane and countless days of rain, our day was sunny and rain free as I predicted!!! We played a shamble, recording net scores, and we had 2 teams come in with a score of 92...the #2 handicap hole appointed the winners...congrats to Gene Ivey, Carole Munger, Sam Davis, and Linda Floyd. Second place went to the team of Bob Mack, Kay Allen, Rick Martino, and Brenda Worzel. Closest to the pin awards went to Dennis Langkum, Angie Garrett, Al Richards, Kim Cox, Betsy Swartz, Heidi Gillespie, and Skip Grissom. After the golf many of our group ventured over to a local seafood joint for fun and food...thanks to all who came out to enjoy a great day after the stressful weekend...golf solves lots of problems!!!!! Plantation Inn Weekend, Crystal River To all reading this newsletter...the deadline for sign up and payment for the Plantation Inn weekend is September 7th...Only a few more days to call me and sign up. I am expecting a full house of nearly 100 golfers. We have many ASGA members coming in from out of state to enjoy these Florida courses... Pine Barrens (World Woods on Sunday) is rated NEXT MEETING: Tuesday, September 14th at Landry s Seafood House located on the Courtney Campbell Causeway. Kay Allen is New Membership Chair We want to welcome our new Membership Chairman, Kay Allen, who can be reached at 813-835-0662, or moffice1@tampabay.rr.com. Our former membership chairman, Debbie Harris, decided to step down as she is now part of a couple with Robert Gottbreht. Best wishes to you both. September Officer Nominations Please note that we will be accepting nominations at our September monthly meeting for the offices of President and Vice-President for the year 2005, with elections to be held at our October meeting. If you cannot attend the meeting, you may email/phone a nomination provided the nominee also emails/phones his/her consent of the nomination; otherwise, the nomination will not be recognized. No matter what causes a golfer to muff a shot, all his playing partners must solemnly chant "You looked up," or invoke the wrath of the universe. The higher a golfer's handicap, the more qualified he deems himself as an instructor. Golf carts always run out of juice at the farthest point from the clubhouse. Golf balls from the same "sleeve" tend to follow one another, particularly out of bounds or into the water, the more expensive the ball, the greater the tendency. A severe slice is a thing of awesome power and beauty. "Nice lag" can usually be translated to "lousy putt." Similarly, "tough break" can usually be translated "way to miss an easy one, sucker." Every time a golfer makes a birdie, he must subsequently make two triplebogeys to restore the fundamental equilibrium of the universe. If you want to hit a 7-iron as far as Tiger Woods does, simply try to lay up just short of a water hazard. It's surprisingly easy to hole a 50-foot putt when you lie 10. The game of golf is 90 percent mental and 10 percent mental. Because bad shots come in groups of three, a fourth bad shot is actually the beginning of the next group of three. When you look up and cause an awful shot, you will always look down again at exactly the moment when you ought to start watching the ball if you ever want to see it again. Any change works for a maximum of three holes and a minimum of not at all.
