High Ways Summer 2012 25 April, Issue 1 The Newsletter from Wimbledon High School Magnificent Mathmaticians Last term four students represented WHS in the regional final of the UK Maths Team Challenge at The City of London School: Rachel and Emily (Year 9) and Georgie and Laura (Year 8). The Team Challenges promote mathematical dexterity, team working, and communication skills. The girls were competing against students from 23 other schools across the London area. The performed remarkably, well finishing in fourth place - the highest performing girls school. Congratulations to all of them! HSBC Internship awarded Congratulations to Emily, Year 13, who has won a place on this year s HSBC undergraduate internship, organised by the GDST. Emily came through a three-stage selection process to win the three-month placement, starting September 2012. Taking the stand Five Year 8 debaters competed in the Southern Junior Debating Tournament at Wilson s School. Although this was the girls first external competition and they came up against Year 10 and 11s, they debated brilliantly and came first and second in some of their rounds! As one of their mums commented: a perfect example of the principles of Failure Week in practice. In addition, Miss King stepped into the breach to complete an adult team and received accolades for her excellent arguments and Points of Information! Fencing for Gold Great Britain no. 2 and 3, Jenny and Georgina, visited the Junior School on Friday. They talked to the girls about the history of fencing and explained what they should be looking out for in the Olympics foil, sabre or epee. They ended the assembly by giving a wonderful display of swordsmanship which was started by all the girls saying, en guarde, ready, FENCE! Wimbledonian Wonderland The Magical Kingdom of Wimbledonia came alive for Once Upon an Off Timetable Day on Tuesday 27th March. Thanks and congratulations go to Head Girl Natasha and her 6th Form committee for all their hard work in making it such a great day. Look out for more photos online in due course... Wimbledon High School Sports Round-up Wednesday 21 March Netball v Surbiton U12 team A won 16-12 U12 team B lost 6-12 U13 team C lost 4-8 U13 team D lost 5-9 Olympic Gym and Dance The gym and dance display celebrated the 2012 London Olympics on May 29th. 150 girls from Year 4 all the way up to Year 12 performed their homage celebrating all aspects of the Olympics. The show opened with the Wimbledon and Olympic Ball girls supported by the Gym Squads presenting their amazing tumble skills in time to tennis balls flying around them as they performed. Zara Shasore from Year 12 performed a urban London street dance routine; we enjoyed watching rhythmic gymnastics Sports Acrobatics and trampolining. The Cheerios asked us if we had the Cheer Factor to cheer our teams on and the Wimbledon Motivators whipped up the audience into an aerobic frenzy. We were inspired by Rachel Hunt s blind solo on the theme of Determination. The U9 were a representation of the Olympic Flame being lit by the U19 s, the U11 showed why they are Simply the Best whilst the U13 rocked the crowd out with their storming performance of We Will Rock You. Lastly, the U15 started the Final Countdown to our vaulting finale, which was topped off (finally) with our confetti bombs! We hope you enjoyed the show as the girls loved performing and showing you their hard work, good luck to all the athletes this year at London and let s see if the Opening Ceremony is as good as ours! Miss Slade Surrey Netball Tournament On Wednesday 21st March, the U18 Netball Squad competed in the Surrey B s Tournament held at St Catherine s school in Bramley, Guildford. We had a successful started gaining victory against Caterham with a score of 5-2. Our second match was against Guildford High School, a tough team to beat. Despite playing hard, we narrowly lost 7-5. We played against the host team St Catherine s (1st team) in our third match losing 3-7. Alice Dunbar and Phoebe Lambert must be congratulated on their excellent defending in this match. In the next round we played our local rivals Putney High School and unfortunately lost 3-8. Notable commendations must be made to Sara Howard (U14 squad player), who demonstrated excellent feeding into the circle. Our final match against Reigate Grammar, we came back with great determination and gained a significant victory 10-4. Flora Casey and Laura Moss worked well together in the circle scoring many great goals. We then went through to the playoffs against St Catherines (2nd Team). After being 1 goal down at half time, and an inspiring half time talk from Mrs Hammond, Sophie Garret, Natasha Pinnington and Rose Jacobson worked hard to turnover the oppositions centre passes. We ended with a win of 10-7, and finished in 7th Position in the Surrey U18B Team Netball Tournament. A special thanks to Mrs Hammond for her constant support and coaching throughout this year s netball season, as this was many of the year 13 s last netball tournament at WHS. Georgia Mathieson (Captain) Sports Forum Saturday Netball Club The taster sessions for the Netball club began last Saturday run by Let s play Netball. The standard of coaching was high and the girls had a brilliant morning.
