1 High Ways Summer May, Issue 2 The Newsletter from Wimbledon High School WHS 6th Formers buck the trend! Our Year 13 students are having little trouble gaining the university offers they want, despite the huge number of applicants this year nationally. Head of 6th Form Ms Peacock says: The majority of girls can choose amongst offers from several prestigious universities, which is fantastic in this competitive environment. Nine students have offers from Oxbridge. This year has seen a nation-wide scramble to secure places for 2011, ahead of the 2012 university fee increase. Jack Petchy Award Eleanor Blackwell and Abby Citty were presented with their Jack Petchey Awards on 7 April 2011 by the Mayor of Merton, Oonagh Moulton, at the Girlguiding, London West Celebration event. Eleanor and Abby were nominated as Young Achievers by their peers. Photo: Naresh Verlander Merton Borough Winners Two Year 7s performed exceptionally in the Merton Athletics day on Wednesday 18 May in Wimbledon Park. They are: Genevieve Dipper (long jump) and Molly McNamara-Langton (800m). The Year 7 and the Year 8/9 combined team both won the Merton Borough Athletics Competition. Head of Maths Mrs Duncan masterminded the project: We wanted to reflect the dynamic approach to maths teaching in the school consider the number of geometrical theorems that govern the rules of successful origami. Explaining the symbolism of the House competition in aid of charity, Head of the Houses Miss Buckingham added: Each colour of bird represents an allegiance to a smaller community (House) within the community of the School as a whole. The Japanese theme cannot help but bring remembrances of the hardships of March. Students paid to make a crane, with all money raised donated to Quake Aid. Thanks must also be extended to Art technician Mr Pinn for his creative input in designing the installation s structure, choosing a dynamic formation inspired by The Great Wave. It was a considerable feat to dangle so many individual components without any tangling and without his enthusiasm the project could not have expanded into something of real artistic merit. As a winner, she will go on to compete against the rest of the UK winners for the regional title at the New Zealand Golf Course in August. Congratulations! Contact phillipa.shearer@hotmail.co.uk Year 9 Essay Competition After Half Term, Year 9 will be researching and writing an essay on a subject of their choice. There is a schedule below that shows the stages involved: Initial information to get everyone thinking over Half Term Tuesday 17th May. Week beginning Monday 6th June time will be given to plan possible questions, explore the Library and receive help on research, etc. Monday 13th June students must submit their proposed question via the VLE. Friday 17th Friday 24th June students will not get normal homework to allow them time to work on their research and essay writing. Monday 27th June essays must be submitted via the VLE by 4pm. The best essays will win a prize, more details of which will be given later. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please don t hesitate to contact Mrs Hailstone. Please note that the Question of Sport Evening on 30th June has had to be postponed until the Autumn term due to scheduling difficulties. Watch this space for the new date. Mrs Jones, WHS Librarian, writes: Many tears of joy were shed late on Saturday afternoon in Wimbledon and the surrounding areas (and in Manchester by the really lucky few) as AFC Wimbledon s Danny Kedwell blasted in the penalty kick which ensured victory in the Conference play-off final, and a return to League football for Wimbledon. For those who might not know, AFC Wimbledon was set up by the supporters from scratch in 2002, after the FA had allowed Wimbledon FC (the former Premier League Club, and FA Cup Winners) to be sold and moved to another part of the country. Wimbledon Common hosted the trials to recruit the first AFCW players, and the club, owned and run by the supporters (including WHS parents, grandparents and staff!), has seen its team rise inexorably through the amateur leagues over the last nine years to this momentous juncture. The club is based at Kingsmeadow in Kingston, but supporters do dream of a return to Merton, if not to Wimbledon itself. If you are not already on board, why not chuck away your Arsenal, Man United and Chelsea shirts and season tickets, and support the phenomenon that is AFC Wimbledon, your local League club!
