World Toilet Day ( ) led by Miss Anderson and Miss Payne What things can we take for granted? Year 2 visited the Florence Nightingale Museum this week and were lucky enough to meet Florence herself! The children (and adults) travelled back in time to the Crimean War and learnt about Florence's inspiring work. They then took part in three activities around the museum, learning about the soldiers' feelings as they went to war, the conditions of the hospitals, facts about Mary Seacole and they even tried on some nursing uniform from the current day and back in Florence's time. It was so much fun and the adults were so impressed with the children s behaviour and constant enthusiasm for the day, asking so many questions and finding out essential information for their topic work back at school. Thank you to all the parents who came along - you were all very involved with the children's learning. Last Thursday, Year 3 visited the Museum of London to round off our topic about the Romans. It was extra special as there was a real Roman amongst us who delivered an amazing drama workshop and told us all about what life was like for the Romans. We also explored the gallery where we found out more about Roman London, discovering how London came to life and what daily life was like in the city 2000 years ago. Did you know the Romans built the city where London now stands, bridging the Thames and creating Londinium in around AD 50 to 410? It was the largest city in Britannia and a vital international port. Year 3 had a great day out, sharing their knowledge and finding out lots of information.

2 Last Wednesday, we were fortunate enough to receive a visit from Dr Rosena Allin-Khan, the MP for Tooting, who had kindly arranged for the school to receive 200 tickets to see England v USA at Wembley. Dr Rosena met with Year 5 and 6 and talked about how she had become an MP and how important it is to make a difference if you can. She was joined by Rachel Yankey who has played 129 times for the England Women s Football Team. Rachel gave an inspirational talk and answered some really probing questions from the children. We learned about her journey from junior football to England, how she overcame stereotyping and what it s like to be in a dressing room when you re losing at half time! She then led a short training session. Fixture Score Scorer v Falconbrook 1-0 Shanyce v Holy Ghost 0-0 v Broomwood Hall 0-0 Qualified for next round v Our Lady Queen of Heaven 0-0 v Beatrix Potter 2-0 Kate x2 Qualified for semi finals v Holy Ghost 0-2 Third/fourth place play off v Penwortham 1-0 Kate Final placing 3 rd out of 23 schools The girls football season kicked off in style on Thursday in the Wandsworth School Games Year 5/6 Girls Football Competition at Southfields with 23 Wandsworth schools participating. Prior to the tournament the girls had played only one game but a win and two draws helped them qualify from their four team league and go into the next round. Two further fixtures followed and a win and a draw meant that the girls were in the semi-finals and in their five games, hadn t conceded a goal! After a valiant effort in the semifinals the girls succumbed to a two-nil defeat however in the 3 rd /4 th place play off they defeated Penwortham by a single goal. Well done girls, a true team effort!

3 On Thursday evening we travelled to Wembley (all 200 of us) to see England defeat the USA by three goals to nil. It was a wonderful experience for the children and their families to sample a big game atmosphere. Thanks to Paul Smyth, Head of Ticketing for the FA (who also visited the school on Wednesday) for making sure we had a fantastic time.

4 Year 6 had a fascinating afternoon with two local magistrates. We learnt a huge amount about law, the court system and the prison system as well as details about the job of a magistrate. We enjoyed having lots of opportunities to ask interesting questions about crime and punishment! This Wednesday and Thursday we will be visited by 4 Headteachers and a trained Ofsted Inspector as part of our Guided Peer Evaluation programme. Our guests will be visiting classrooms, talking to the children, staff and Governors and giving us questions to think about as part of our School Improvement process. We will let you know the outcomes of the visit in next week s newsletter.
