There were elements of participation for any parent visitors and, according to reports, the parents acquitted themselves well. Thank you to the Year 3 teachers and the very enthusiastic Year 3 pupil guides. Friday 9th February 2018 Pancake Race Given the timings of Shrove Tuesday and the half-term holiday, the Annual Durlston inter-house Pancake Race was held a week early this year. Like last year we were blessed with ideal pancake race weather and four keen, enthusiastic, honed teams of athletes. The rules were simple: run, flip, run, flip again, run and pass on; all quickly mastered by the House teams. It was a very impressive spectacle flipping and running of the highest order. St David won, making it a hat-trick of wins over the last three years, with St George 2nd, St Andrew 3rd and St Patrick a valiant 4th. Pre-Prep cheer- leaders

Dance Show Durlston has been dance crazy these past few weeks; lots of preparation, preening and practice for all involved, culminating in two nights and one morning of Durlston dance heaven.

Too many stand-out performances to name check but every dance, whether solo, group or year, was full of energy, enthusiasm and joy.

2 Dance Show Durlston has been dance crazy these past few weeks; lots of preparation, preening and practice for all involved, culminating in two nights and one morning of Durlston dance heaven. The themes this year were A Night at the Movies for the Senior School and Australia for the Pre-Prep and the shows were magnificent. Too many stand-out performances to name check but every dance, whether solo, group or year, was full of energy, enthusiasm and joy. It was good to see all of Year 3 and Year 4 involved at Senior level, and while boys were somewhat lacking in the other senior year groups, pretty much every girl in the Senior School took part and shone. Thank you to the make-up and hair wizards, and to Mrs Sparshott-Thompson and the chief choreographer, Mrs Ring, for two great evenings at Senior level, and to Miss Bryony for an outstanding and joyous Pre-Prep extravaganza. I m sure the children get some of their talents and motivation from inspirational dad-dancing. Sporting Highlights Many thanks to the sports coaches who have been braving the elements and having such a great season so far with their respective teams. It s good to see so many children having the chance to play in the teams and enjoy the camaraderie of a fixture with friends. Highlights this week are the U8 Boys winning the BCS Tag Rugby Festival, U11s winning the WHP Hockey Tournament, U13s coming 13th in the IAPS Hockey Regionals. For the girls the U11B and U11C teams who played cohesively to defeat Stroud. Comedy Show Laura Lawson, a parent of two Middle school children, is running a Comedy Festival on Saturday 17th March in support of Sports Relief. The performances will take place on a stage in the heart of Lymington and pupils from Durlston have been invited to perform on the stage, performing comic routines including, but not limited to, songs, jokes, dance, act, rap, boogie and, at the heart of it all, having FUN. Any money raised on the day will be given to Sports Relief or our exceptional local charity, Oakhaven Hospice Trust. 3 From Pre-Prep Dance Week in Pre-Prep never fails to bring tears of joy! Miss Bryony has been working with the children all week to put together the most wonderful show. Featuring crocodiles, sharks, kangaroos and surfers, there can only be one theme Australian Adventures. It was an absolute delight to watch the children performing with such confidence, shining like stars and clearly enjoying every moment. I don t know about you, but my face ached with smiling! Pancake Parties Since Shrove Tuesday inconveniently falls during half-term, we created our own Pancake Extravaganza a week early. Pre-Prep enthusiastically cheered on their older siblings and friends in the inter-house pancake race; Chef Mike treated us to pancakes for lunch; Mrs Bailey inspired us with a special assembly; the children practised flipping and catching pancakes (with great hilarity) and Kindergarten used their spreading skills to cover homemade pancakes with melted chocolate. What a treat! After half term, Years One and Two are moving closer to home with our Great Britain topic. Reception will be entering the magical world of fairies and wizards whilst Kindergarten children will be thinking about people that help us. Mrs Aldred is excitedly planning a role play hospital and fire station. There is much to look forward to! In the meantime, may I wish you all the best for a fun-filled half term. 4 Art Department Young Artists Open Exhibition 2018 We are delighted to announce that all of the Durlston pupils who submitted artworks for the Young Artist s Open Exhibition have been selected to have their work exhibited at the St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery from Friday 23 February Sunday 15 April. Special mention to George Roche and Tallulah Kalis who have done exceptionally well to also be awarded Highly Commended. Please do go and have a look at the exhibition to see the Durlston pupils artwork on display and check the website for opening times Durlston Eagles Flying High! The Year 8 pupils have tackled the technical skills of drypoint etching in the art lessons with considered precision and we have been busy printing out some of the etchings using our own printing press. They have successfully printed some really finely detailed etchings of a range of different Eagles and the results are stunning.

Senior School Forthcoming Event We have some very exciting plans for World Book Day 2018 which is taking place on Thursday 1st March. The theme will be story writing and story-telling within an Ancient Rome/Roman Times setting. It would be fantastic if your child could dress up for the day bearing this in mind. A simple, Roman costume is all that is required. We are also really lucky, as Caroline Lawrence, author of The Roman Mysteries, will be visiting Durlston and speaking to the whole of the Senior School (Years 3-8). She will also be available for book signing. Books will be available to purchase for 5 on the day.
