Middlesex County Netball Association AGM 20 th June 2013 Development Officer s Report Rhiannon Smith (rhiannon.smith@englandnetball.co.uk) England Netball funding At the end of 2012 England Netball submitted a funding bid to Sport England, called the Whole Sport Plan. This detailed England Netballs plans for the next 4 years ( ) on how they are going to achieve their vision of finishing first in the World Championships, getting 10,000 more women playing netball each year and providing a first class netball experience. It was announced just before Christmas that England Netball was successful in receiving 25.3 million investment from Sport England for This was a 35% increase on funding compared to Since this funding confirmation, planning for the next four years has taken place at a National level cascading down to Region then County Level. The County has been working hard over the last 4 months to put their plan together. This is now finished, and there are some exciting plans in place which will help grow and support Netball within the County. Back to Netball Back to Netball is very popular in Middlesex with 1308 new women returning to the game from April March This is down to the large number of new Back to Netball sessions being set up and also a number of sessions becoming self sustaining. The County has supported this by successfully applying for funding to set up new and sustain existing sessions. For example over the last year the County received 1352 via the Give it a Go fund, and 491 from Sportivate. Currently there is at least one Back to Netball session in 12 of Middlesex s boroughs. Women from these sessions have started to join netball clubs or form their own teams and play in local leagues. Some have also gain gained coaching and umpiring qualifications. Over the last year, 5 Netball Development Community Coaches (NDCCs) have been setting up a large number of Back to Netball sessions and festivals within 8 Middlesex boroughs, with the aim of getting more women playing Netball. Below is a summary of the successes/highlights they have had over the last year- Kensington & Chelsea In October a successful Back to Netball session at Westway Sports Centre was organised. This was funded via the Give it a Go fund which was managed by Pro-Active Central London. This session ran for free for 2 months and at the final session 5 Back to Netball teams from across London came together to play against each other in a fun Back to Netball festival. This session was a massive success with 52 women returning to netball in 8 weeks. Islington 360 women have returned to netball over the last year. Back to Netball is now established in the borough with sessions at leisure centres and primary schools and a number of Back to Netball festivals organised. From the success of Back to Netball in the borough, it has led to other netball development includingo A new secondary school league for year 7, 8 and 9 and a summer primary school league. o 10 primary schools receiving coaching from qualified coaches within curriculum and after school sessions. o An increase in the number of junior members at Islington Netball Club. 1
Brent and Harrow Over the last year 325 new women have returned to netball within these two boroughs, 2 of these women have gone onto achieve their UKCC Level 2 Coaching qualification. A new netball league has been set up at JFS school aimed at Back to Netball teams. 4 evening sessions have self sustained themselves- 2 at Harrow Leisure Centre, one at Aspire National Training Centre and one at Bridge Park Leisure Centre. A number of festivals have been held in the boroughs with a Further Education festival running in Harrow which had 4 teams enter, and a teachers festival in Brent which consisted of 9 teams. Funding has been secured from Wembley National Stadium Trust and Sport for Social Change Network (SSCN) to help sustain Back to Netball in Brent and to support the development of the new league, coaches, and officials. Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham and Hounslow 335 women returned to the game over the last year with 2 women passing their Level 2 Coaching awards and 3 individuals completing their Level 1 qualification. A successful Back to Netball session was set up for staff at the West London mental health trust, with sessions being opened up recently to staff from Ealing Hospital. Netball taster sessions were organised for the patients. Back to Netball sessions are also popular within the colleges, with sessions running at West Thames College and College of Ealing, West London and Hammersmith & Fulham. There is currently a Back to Netball session running at Osterley Sports Centre, which has a 74 year old women attending. She had not played netball for 60 years, which shows it is never too late to return to the game! Haringey There is now 8 sustainable sessions running in the borough, all sessions continue to have new women attending them. Back to Netball league successfully ran in March aimed at existing Back to Netball teams. This was so successful another league ran over the summer. Generation of high social media interest with participants through Twitter and Facebook. The future of Back to Netball... In the plans, the NDCCs as well as running Back to Netball sessions will run some Into Netball sessions which are aimed at year 5 and 6 girls to encourage them to play High 5 netball. The areas that the NDCCs are covering are going to change each year which means by 2017 all Middlesex boroughs will be covered by an NDCC. For the focus boroughs for the NDCCs will be as follows- 1. Sasha Corbin- North London NDCC-Haringey and Barnet 2. Elaine Smith-Central London North NDCC- Islington, Camden and Tower Hamlets 3. Adele Burnett- North West London NDCC-Hillingdon and Harrow 4. Nina Pasquale- South West London NDCC- Hounslow, Hammersmith & Fulham and Kensington & Chelsea New League- Brent and Harrow Netball League A new netball league has just started in Middlesex called the Brent/Harrow Netball League. This is based at JFS School in Kenton and consists of 5 teams who are half way through their first ever summer season. This league was set up due to a need for more competitive opportunities in the area because of an identified need from the Back to Netballers in both of these Boroughs. The league has a committee formed of 6 volunteers made up of women from the Back to Netball sessions and also from local clubs. For more information please see: 2
League Development Grants This year Middlesex County Netball Association have awarded two league development grants both to the North London Netball League. The first grant for 800 was used to start a new summer junior netball league for secondary aged players. The aim of this league was to provide competitive opportunities to those junior players that were new or in their clubs second or third team. As well as providing an opportunity for young umpires to practice their umpiring skills. The second grant for 868 is to be used by North London Netball League to set up a Back to Netball league. The County in addition is currently supporting the league to offer umpire mentoring during the summer season. New Junior Clubs Over the last year there has been a number of new junior netball clubs stated within Middlesex- Harrow Harrow All Stars Netball Club started on a Saturday morning in summer 2012 at Harrow Leisure Centre as a pay as you go session for 8-16 year olds. The number of attendees has continued to increase and the club gets regularly 20 players attending the High 5 sessions and 15 players attending the secondary school sessions. The club is currently looking at setting up a formal committee and introducing formal membership fees. The club is entering the West London Junior Netball League (WLJNL) Tournament this weekend and plans to enter the league in September. Ealing Old Actonians NC have recently developed a junior section at the club. This has been in partnership with Natalie Seaton s Lets Play Netball Academy. The Academy provides opportunities for girls (7-13 years old) to develop their understanding and skills in Netball in a fun environment. The club has created a link with these sessions, so that the girls become an affiliated member of the club and represent the club in the WLJNL in their U13 team. The future plan for the club is to increase the number of junior teams and progress the juniors into the clubs senior teams. Westminster In partnership with Westminister Council, junior netball club sessions were set up last Easter. To date there is approx. 20 girls attending these sessions. The club now has a small committee and they entered a team into the WLJNL for the 2012/13 season. In the future the club is looking at creating a link with Poly Netball Club, and to continue to grow the number of juniors attending the sessions so they have multiple junior teams. Brent New Life NC based in Wembley has recently added a junior section to their thriving adult club. The club has been working hard over the last couple of months to promote the sessions to schools to encourage girls to attend their Saturday morning session. In the future the club is hoping to enter a team into a junior league and have a team for every age group. School Club Links This year a number of Middlesex clubs have formalised links with local schools to increase the number of junior members. Since June last year 4 links have been formalised- Troy Club NC and Northumberland Park School Grasshoppers NC and Rivers Academy Oakwood NC and Garden Suburb Primary School Old Actonians NC and Orchard House. This will lead to more school players making the transition into club netball. 3
CAPs Clubs CAPs is England Netballs Club Action Planning scheme, which recognises clubs with U18s that are following and meeting minimum standards. Clubs achieving this accreditation are recognised nationally as being a well run club. Congratulations to Falcons NC, Oakwood NC, Old Actonians NC, Troy NC and Islington NC all who gained bronze CAPs accreditation this year. A special well done to Palmers Green NC who maintained their silver accreditation this year by successfully completing their 4 year reassessment. This now means in Middlesex there are 13 CAPs clubs, 6 who hold the silver award and 7 the bronze award. AP Saints, Poly NC and London Netball Academy are all working towards achieving CAPs. Club Development Grants 51 Middlesex affiliated individuals have applied for and successfully received Middlesex club development grants this year. This has been for a range of courses including coaching, umpiring, and first aid. Due to the popularity of the fund this year the County added a further 1000 taking the total to This scheme is still open and an online application form can now be found via the Middlesex website. Premier League for Sport For the last two years Islington NC has been part of the Premier League for Sport programme partnered with Arsenal Football Club. The aim of this programme is to get more young people playing sport. Arsenal FC via this programme has funded Islington NC to set up 4 satellite club sessions based at a number of different schools within Islington and Camden. These sessions are open to all and provide opportunities for more girls to access netball. The aim is to then encourage the players from the satellite sessions to attend the main club sessions at Sobell Leisure Centre. The club has benefitted greatly from being part of this programme as their junior membership has doubled and they now have more qualified coaches. Goalden Globe Awards The England Netball Goalden Globe Awards recognise and thank the huge volunteer workforce that is involved in Netball. There are 8 different categories in which nominations are sought for, and each Region chooses a Regional winner. Massive congratulations to the below Middlesex individuals who have all received a nomination for a Regional Goalden Globe; Grassroots Coach Award- Lesley Tischler (Poly Netball Club) Grassroots Official Award- Amber Derrien Mary Bulloch Administration Award- May Isolda (North London Netball League) Young Volunteer- Ayesha Maynard (Elthorne Eclipse NC), Frankie Cadogan (Academy NC) and Joycelyn Longdon (Charville NC) Unsung Hero- Violet Corbin (Troy NC) Good luck to the above, who will find out at the Regional Celebration event on the 3 rd July whether they have won the Regional Award. These winners will then be put forward for the National Awards, which will be presented at the National event in September. 4
Young Leaders Week After the success of the first Middlesex County Netball Association young leaders week in February 2012 half term, the County decided to continue this for 2012/13. They decided to change the format slightly so that a number of courses for young leaders aged 13 to 18 years old ran in each half term. Middlesex County Netball Association allocated 500 to this project to ensure that the cost to attend the courses was accessible for all. During October half term a beginner umpire course and a young netball organiser course was organised, one in the West and one in the North of the County. In total 44 young leaders attended both courses. Then in February half term a beginners umpire course was organised with 21 attendees. All of these individuals signed up to England Netballs Pass on your Passion scheme and are now using the skills which they learnt at their schools and clubs. Youth Umpire Award On the 23rd November, 9 teachers attended a Youth Umpire Teacher Orientation workshop at St Thomas More School in Haringey. These individuals are now qualified to tutor the Youth Umpire Award to their pupils at their respective schools. A teacher from JFS School in Brent attended a Youth Umpire Teacher Orientation workshop in September 2011, and since then has tutored the Youth Umpire Award twice at her school. In May students from this school were assessed and all passed their Youth Umpire Award. In December 2012 another assessment took place with 22 girls and all passed and achieved their Youth Umpire award. All of these students are now umpiring at school level competitions and a number of them are moving on to their C award course. Links with Surrey Storm Tamsin Greenway, Surrey Storm Coach and ex. International player tutored a coaching workshop on the 13th November at Bridge Park Leisure Centre in Brent. The workshop gave the 28 teachers and coaches who attended loads of ideas of how to integrate speed and agility exercises into coaching sessions. Tamsin also made a guest appearance at a Middlesex County Academy training session and also at a Play day for the Satellite Academy athletes. All the players on the Middlesex Talent Programme enjoyed perfecting their skills with Tamsin and learning what it takes to get to England. University Netball Officer (UNO) Kings College, a University with campuses in both Middlesex and Surrey were involved in an England Netball pilot programme introducing a Volunteer Netball Officer into Universities. The aim of this role is to increase student participation in netball within the University. The role focusses on those who are either not currently playing, or expressed an interest to be part of the university BUCS squads, but were unsuccessful in getting a regular place into these squads. A UNO was in place during the last academic year and the University is still part of the programme for 2013/14. If you have any questions or would like any further information about the work I have completed, or want to develop an area of netball in the County further, please do not hesitate to contact me on rhiannon.smith@englandentball.co.uk or
